Just curious what people think about this, and posting it in the x-wing forum since it's the most busy. What is the acceptable amount of time to wait before openly referencing and/or discussing spoilers from the movie on a forum, or at the local game store, etc. Obviously it's a different situation if you know everyone within ear shot has seen it or w/e, but I'm speaking in general terms. So how long are you waiting?
Force Awakens Spoilers......how long do we wait?
Two months minimum
People have had well over 72 hours to see the movie. All the hushing and spoiler bashing bs needs to stop because anyone who cares enough about the movie being spoiled should've seen it by now.

Yeah, because there's no way tons of people have any other important events going on this week that might prevent them from getting to the movies.

Apart from those places where it hasn't even opened yet of course.
Or would I have been allowed to spoil it on thursday, it having been more than 24 hours since it opened? Or Friday? Or, going by your 72 hours, saturday morning?
A few weeks to a couple months... I'm dying to do some fan art but the ideas I'm having are kind of spoiler-y. ![]()
Well, you can do the art and then share when you feel appropriate or in one of the places that are blanketed by a general spoiler alert.
I just saw the movie tonight. My buddy wanted to get a group of us together to make it more of an event. So even for some of the hard core fans, we waited a few days.
That being said, I came to this forum the last few days, and all posts that might have spoilers in it were marked...and I appreciate that, and hope that we (me included now) keep that up for at least a few weeks. Just in case.
Really after this upcoming weekend I'm thinking the fault lies with the spoilee. They are already a small minority. As time goes on they just get smaller. I'm not going to just start openly talking about them anytime soon, but really you should know that if New Year's rolls around and you haven't seen it yet it is your own fault if you are spoiled. Just stay off the net.

Edited by TasteTheRainbowI went to my FLGS to pick up a Tie/FO and X-Wing T/70. There was a huge sign on the door as you walked in, declaring the shop a spoiler free zone! It will be interesting to see how long they maintain the ban. With this being Christmas week, I think people legitimately might need more than just a week. Travel and family could easy thwart the best laid plans to attend a viewing.
All that being said, I originally was planning to go after Christmas. But just the discussion and Spoiler alerts showing up on this forum were enough for me to "get it in gear" and go see TFA last Saturday. Better safe than sorry...
I would say wait till after the new year. Plenty of holiday time to see the movie by then..
One of my friends is going to see it Christmas Eve. I imagine a fair few families will be looking at going to see it on Boxing Day, New Year etc.
I think it's fair to wait until 2016 rolls in before actively discussing it - at the very least. Some would say wait until the DVD release...
Next year for sure.
Be considerate of your fellow fans! "Everyone's had plenty of time to see the movie by now!" is pretty harsh. What about parents with kids who can't line up a babysitter around the winter holidays? College students moving home and working retail so they can buy books for the next semester? Fans who can't afford the theater and have to wait for DVD? My kids, who aren't old enough to see the movies yet and I'm still trying to protect from Empire Strikes Back spoilers?
Please be wise, be kind, be considerate: unless you know the people you're talking with are cool with spoilers/have seen the film, give it until a couple months after DVD release at least.
And if you spoil ESB/TFA for my children, you'll wish all I'd done was toss you into the Death Star II's reactor core!
I'm with the one to two month crowd, but I also think it depends on what the spoiler is. For example, making comments about how Rey flew the falcon around Jakku is probably safe a week or two after the movie comes out. Making comments about the ending and who lives, who dies, and who kills who should be tagged with spoiler warnings for quite a while.
At the same time, people who haven't seen the movie should know that the longer they wait, the greater the possibility of someone blurting something out. If I'm waiting to watch a movie or show, I purposefully avoid any related content for fear of spoilers.
All in all, I don't think it's any inconvenience to use spoiler warnings. I want other people to enjoy the movie as much as I did and am more than glad to help them do that by tagging any post as a spoiler.
I'm using the two week rule.
Eventually the media outlets and news stations will deem it safe to spoil the movie. This forum should do so before that. As long as the movie is in its first run release its probably not right to spoil stuff. As soon as they put out a new TV trailer saying that you need to go see it again it's probably safe.
IMHO 2 months or once it has disappeared from cinemas whichever is quickest.
Is it really so hard not to be a **** and spoil things for others? If you have anything to say about the film do it in one of the multiple spoiler threads that are available.
Plenty of people who care haven't seen it yet, there are Star Wars fans who have low income right before Xmas. I know a couple of people who have turned off Facebook for a few weeks and are avoiding the internet because they know they won't get to the cinema until after the new year.
Openly? I would agree 2 months or at the most 3. Otherwise I would still preface anything with TFA Spoiler.
That really is just the decent/kind thing to do.
Someone on this Forum spoiled something for me and it really sucked.
I likely will not get to see it until New Years Eve due to work and other conflicts. Everyone has been good for the most part on labeling things with spoilers, but I would expect most people to have seen it by January 1.

I'd say in general, 2-3 weeks, depending on the time of the year.
But in the case of this forum... There's little reason to post spoilers anywhere other than the threads talking about the movie.
There's little in TFA that applies to X-Wing, even with ships from the movie in the game. There just isn't much in the movie itself that applies to the rules or the game. So I can't see why anyone would need to mention a spoiler in any of the non-movie threads here.
That said at your LGS or the like, I'd give it 2-3 weeks before the cone of silence is lifted. There comes a point in which people want to discuss a movie, and they shouldn't have to remain silent because someone may not of seen it yet.
I mean it can be taken to rather large extremes sometimes, I saw on reddit someone complaining how people shouldn't spoil who Lukes dad is, from ESB. I had someone complain that they spoiled the return of Gandalf in the trailer for Two Towers. I had people get mad at me for spoiling what happened to Aslan in the Witch, the Lion and the Wardrobe...
taking the winter solstice and the hijack christian festival (;p) into account I'd say mid - late Jan at earliest
I've been very impressed with how respectful and considerate people have been with spoilers for the movie. It's not that you can't talk about it; just be respectful to those who haven't seen it, keep spoilers to threads that are well marked and all, at least through the New Year. I've not seen the geek community treat one another so well in years; so I'm quite enjoying it, even after seeing the film.
Hmm...
Well the question isn't really how long you should wait. I think anyone has a right to free speech and you can't be held accountable for someone overhearing your conversation. I mean, isn't that how conversations about movies go anyways?
"Oh wow, have you seen Spy Kids 4 yet?"
"No, not yet."
"Oh, I won't spoil it for you but it's really good."
And then you moved on.
In a forum debate? Well how long would you wait to reveal video game spoilers? You wouldn't, you'd just wait. You'd label the thing as spoilered.
Should people get angry about offhand remarks weeks after the fact? No. That's silly. Should people go around conversing loudly about Star Wars major plot points because they have a right to? No, that's also dumb. Are we expected to go see a movie so that other people can talk about it? Are other people expected to not talk about movies we haven't seen yet?
Meanwhile in Syria...
