Ship Prices

By thecowley, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So are the ones listed in the books prices brand new, or just the going prices or what? is it possible to buy ships at used prices? Any one have any experince with this from either side of the table?

up to your GM

That is actually an interesting thing where I started a custom table for.

The prices in the book are imo the ones for new or good-as-new ships. When you wanna get a used ship I had this idea, which I will post later but it is basically like this: A used ship is 15% cheaper in steps, but for every step it comes with an existing damage effect akin to critical hits (and with a difficulty set to it, too). You can decide to give it only 5% drops and add an interesting modification that the previous owner installed.

Oh and each prize drop is of course applied to current one, not the original one. Can't have them become too cheap.

That would somewhat simulate the "fixer-upper" quality of a used ship. I am currently working on the table and will post it in the near future.

According to the YT-1300 Owner's (Haynes) Manual, the YT-1300 costs ~100k new, (It's somewhere within a 10k difference of what the EotE book lists) and ~30k used. So I personally use that as precedence for the book prices to be new, and used prices to be significantly lower (much as with cars) but (much as with cars) you will have to do quite a bit of work to a used one. By the time you're done I'd expect you to have spent at least a total value of half the book price. If not more depending on how much you can do yourself.

I've always assumed the prices listed are average market value for a new (or in the case of extremely old or limited production craft, "like-new") vehicle. Used prices would vary but would typically be between 25% and 75% of the listed value depending on the details, modifications, and overall condition of the craft.

Actual condition vs. price wouldn't have to match of course, I'd probably grade the Millennium Falcon as either "Fair" or "Poor" condition due to various systems issues and the overall beat-up appearance, but I suspect Lando lost it to Han on a bet worth well over the 75% street value...

I'd say, as a GM, that they are the showroom prices (so new or nearly new), with the price for used depending on condition of the ship and popularity/legality.

The prices of ships (or any equipment) aren't reflective of any sort of simulationist in-game economy. Combined with rarity and availability, price numbers are reflective of the difficulty of acquiring said ship in a pulpy, space-fantasy setting where the PCs are the heroes of the story. And that's pretty much it.

What the numbers reflect in the game universe depends on the taste of the people sitting at your table. Speaking for myself as a GM, and since I never enjoyed playing Dungeons & Gold Economies or trying to reflect real life in a game about hitting people in the face, I don't worry about it. They're just the numbers that the game gives.

The book price could sort of be seen as the new or like new price of the ship in question. Or rather, its the price of that particular vehicle if its in good working order with no damage or major problems. The GM is of course free to adjust the price up or down depending on factors.

I personally would love if there was some official method of adjusting the prices depending on damage or some mechanical flaw. IE: There is a YT-1300 for sale down at the spaceport. Only 10,000 credits! Such a sweet deal.(but you don't know if there is some flawed component, maybe the owner is trying to ditch a stolen vessel, or maybe its really as good as it seems and you're getting a working ship for super cheap)

Why not both?
