Explicit Command timings, and saving as tokens

By Blail Blerg, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

1. If I get a token beyond my command value (one I can't keep), can I spend it immediately? Or do I have to put on my ship first (by discarding one), and then use it?

2. When is the timing to decide if you are going to use a command or save as a token? Is it always exactly as you flip the dial?

Ex. Let's say I have a nav command. Do I wait until I determine a course to decide I don't need it and place it as a token?

3. Conc fire. When I reveal the dial what do I have to declare? Token or use this turn? When I'm about ready to roll the attack pool, do I have to declare that I'm using the conc fire command on this attack?

I'm also assuming you cannot save it as a token if you finish attacks and don't use it.

Here's another question: It has a little to do with pre-measuring range. Can you pre-measure range/los/arc to know if you're going to have anything to attack anyway?

You decide whether or not to convert a dial to a token at the time you reveal the dial, and at no other time.

You spend tokens (and dials, if you didn't convert it to a token) at specific times depending on the particular command.

Repair and squadron commands are spent when you flip the dial. So those two you are deciding whether to convert to a token at the same time you have to decide whether you want to use the dial.

You spend navigate commands (token or dial) when it is time to move your ship.

Concentrate fire is used during the attack sequence for a single attack.

The precise timing for those two is laid out in the rule book under the relevant action.

So, with those two, you have to decide whether you want the dial before you get to the point where you would use it.

And the new FAQ has some new info on when you can use the maneuver tool to premeasure.

You can use the range ruler to premeasure anything at any time - so long as you are not using it simultaneously with the maneuver tool (or some other tool.)

I want a new token but I already have as many as I could. Could I discard anyone in order to get the new (from dial, Tarkin or whatever) at the "reveal command dial step"?

Same way: if I don't want the new token could I discard the new one. I mean, with Tarkin I get new tokens for all my ships but a raider already has the nav token I want and I want to give eng tokens to my other ships. Could I give these tokens to my ships but the raider with Tarkin?

I always played it very "generously" and never cared about it but I could imagine someone saying I can't give a new token to my ship cause it is full and I can't discard tokens "by the face". Sorry for this literally transcription of an Spanish idiom but I don't know the equivalent. Maybe "thanks to my pretty face" is more precise XD

The Ruling is as such:

• When a ship is assigned a command token, if it has more command tokens than its command value, it must immediately discard one of its command tokens.

This means that if you have a Command 3 Ship, with 3 tokens... and you add a Token, for a split half-a-fraction of a second before immediate discard, it has 4 tokens, and you decide which one to get rid of...

So you can discard either an existing token, or even the new token.

Important distinction here is that you must immediately discard a token - you cannot spend a token.

Absolutely Correct. It must be discarded, as you have not reached the point where you can spend tokens.

Gaining a Token from Tarkin happens at the start of the ship phase , which is before dials are even revealed.

Gaining a Token from a dial happens, obviously, when you reveal the dial.

The earliest you can spend a token, and specifically, an Engineering or Squadron token, is after you reveal your dial.

After , somewhat obviously, happens after " When " or " While ".

Thanks Drasnighta. You always save my day.
