NEW TIE DEFENDERS!

ANYONE HAVE ANY GOOD SQUAD IDEAS?

(Also, I am very excited, if you couldn't tell.)

I have been a Defender pilot ever since I got one for my B-Day. But, they are not the best. Hopefully some new pilots will help. (Also the awesome title cards!)

Darn it I want it. Gotta save the money for it.

As far as a squadron, I'd want to run that red Defender with two red Interceptors. as for what pilots and upgrades to use, I'll wait and see.

I could get Rexler Brath with Defender/D and Ion Cannon with 2 Royal Guard Pilots with PtL, Autothrusters and Stealth Device, but I'd like to see one of the new pilots.

Vessery won't play nice with Interceptors without Targeting Computers and I'd rather keep them harder to hit. I really hope aren't stubborn about how overpriced the Defenders are and price the new ones accordingly.

If you want to take 3 defenders;

  • Maarek Stele*, TIE/x7, Predator, Engine Upgrade
  • Onyx Squadron Pilot, TIE/x7
  • Delta Squadron Pilot, TIE/x7

* Stele's pilot skill of 7 sits directly between Vessery's PS6 and Brath's PS8. As they're 2 points apart in cost, I'm assuming he's 36 points.

If you want to take 3 defenders;

  • Delta Squadron Pilot, TIE/x7

If you assumed that about the Bomber pilots you would be wrong. PS 8 Tomax is 2 points cheaper than PS 7 Rhymer.

Maarek Stele is PS 7 compared to PS 6 Vessery. Maybe he'll be 33 points, and Glaive Squadron Pilots will be 32. People crow about how great Vessery's ability is, so he's probably expensive because of it.

I had a crazy idea on this topic. We can't see what a "Glaive Squadron Pilot" is, but I think we'd be fair in inferring that it's going to be mid-pilot skill with an EPT a-la Roayal Guard Interceptor or Black Squadron TIE. Probably points costs are 33 to 34.

If we assume that's the case, let's work with the TIE-D title to give both firepower and control.

Glaive Squadron w/ Ion Cannon, Predator, TIE-D... 40 points

Scimitar Squadron, TIE Shuttle, Mara Jade, Intel Agent... 20 points

Scimitar goes in for the block and stress distribution, using Intel Agent to barrel roll into position as desired. The Glaives bring both firepower and set up the treasured Ion-plus-stress interaction. Predator works well on them because even if they use their Focus on defense (likely given a lower PS) they'll still have two modified three-dice attacks each.

Edit: for the example given I assumed 34 points for a Glaive. if they're 33 each, TIE Mark II engines seem like a reasonable investment.

I expect one of the standard lists will be:

Colonel Vessery + TIE/x7 + Crack Shot (34)

Glaive Squadron Pilot + TIE/x7 + Crack Shot (33)

Glaive Squadron Pilot + TIE/x7 + Crack Shot (33)

TIE/x7 is looking very efficient, and an entire list flying together like that doesn't offer any easy targets.

I'll be running a defender build in the new year. I specifically want to run 1 Defenders, with 2 Aces. Where the Defender is focused initially on exploiting the TIE-D upgrade to Ion or Flechette a target for focus fire by all three. As the match progresses, the Defender would be as aggressive or passive as needed to avoid having one of the trio get taken out.

Build So far...

  • Defender X + TIE/D Title, Flechette Cannon,Twin Ion Engine, Outmaneuver (38+ Points, depending on which pilot is selected and their cost)
  • Vader + Title, ATC, Lone Wolf, maybe with Engine or Stealth Device (32-36 Points)
  • 2nd Ace
    • Option 1: Omega Leader + Comm Relay, Juke (26 Points)
    • Option 2: The Inquisitor + Title, Autothrusters, maybe with Crack Shot, Juke, or Predator (28-31 Points)
    • Option 3: Wampa (14 Points)
    • Option 4: Carnon Jax + Autothrusters (28 Points)

3 Delta squad TIE/Ds, one with Tractor Beam the other two with Ion Cannons, all with TIE Mk 2 (mostly just because it fits in). WHite K-turn all day, first one attempts to tractor, other two ionise. 6 attacks a round (albeit only 5 doing damage) plus a decent chunk of shields and agility.

Insanely expensive in any tournament setup though. 2 punishers, 2 imp vets sets, AND 3 Defenders.

Also, probably gimmicky as heck and not very functional.
