Am I interpreting the rules wrong or now the half points rule applies only when calculating the margin of victory?
Tournament scoring for large ships changed again?
Am I interpreting the rules wrong or now the half points rule applies only when calculating the margin of victory?
Yes, but you use MoV to determine who won if it went to time and/or how much MoV both players earned. They're just clarifying the wording, nothing has really changed.
Meaning? How was it applied before? Isn't MoV only relevant at the end of a match, whether by time or by KO?

Not really.
The MoV is the tiebreaker for the next phase pairings or determining the tournament winner.
The tiebreaker at the end of match for elimination rounds only, is initiative.
During Swiss rounds if a match ends to a tie there is no tiebreaker.

How do you determine who won the game, or if the game actually was a tie? I'll give you a hint, it's covered in the Margin of Victory section of the tournament rules.

Where does it say to determine the winner using MoV?

Nowhere. He has confused the tournament points with end of match scoring.
During Swiss rounds if a match ends to a tie, both players get 1 Tournament Point.
In elimination rounds, the guy that has initiative goes to the next round.
Edited by tsondaboyNow calculating MoV with the current wording is kinda tricky.
We are instructed to add the amount by which the winners score exceed the losers score.
So lets say you won a match with Brobots killing a Z-95 Bandit barely scoring you 12 points, while one of the bots is brought to half hull.
You get a full win, but the squad point difference is a negative number due to the rules change.
Which means your squad point value does not exceed your opponents so you adds nothing and the opponent subtracts nothing when calculating MoV.
So unless they change the wording from "exceed" to "the difference between the winners and the losers squad value difference", to allow for negatives, the minimum MoV for the winner will always be 100.
I dont know about this. The program I use you input your opponents points you destroyed and SoS and MoV filters to the final winner.
This is Swiss ofcourse. Single Elim is obvious.

Which is the case when the wording on the rules 3.2.2 was "When calculating a score," so MoV for large ships was calculated the same way as end of match scoring.
Now that it is changed to "When calculating Margin of victory (see “Margin of victory” below)," end of match scoring is done separately from MoV calculation.
Keep in mind that you are not instructed to calculate MoV to determine the winner if the game reaches the time limit.
In addition mathematically speaking, score and MoV are different numbers.
A players score varies in the range of 0 to 100 points where a players MoV from 0 to 200 points!
Edited by tsondaboySo dont use the half score for big ships at the end of a match to calculate the winner?
Oops... Ive been scoring events wrong.

You did nothing wrong up to now if you where using the previous rule version (3.2.2).
The rules changed again today and go into effect from January 1st.
Edited by tsondaboySo PwTs are back among the top NPEs of the game, lovely.

Prediction: it's a typo and should read, "When calculating squad points,". Not "When calculating MoV..." It makes no sense to introduce MoV there otherwise since MoV it's own section a couple paragraphs later. If it related just to MoV it would have been there. All of the information in the section you're referring to is about scoring the game.

This could be true, although I hope not because I like the change.
Regardless we did see a similar typo in the previous update that was rectified one week later.
It was the rule about free actions and asteroids.
That is terrible, and I hope they fix it. The half points was a great change, and should be extended to small bases like Miranda!!!
There is no skill in running away with 1-2 hull for 30 minutes and winning the game.
I've noticed a lot of typos and errors in these documents for all the games I follow.

If you extend half points to small ships we go right back to the same problem as before really.

It's also that it's directly contrary to the statement that included their reason they put out about the rule change in September. I think they'd put out another statement to explain the change again.

So you say Coran with R2-D2 or Poe with R5-P9 are fine running away half the game to recharge shields but other ships are not?

Doing green maneuvers (R2-D2) or being forced not to boost (R5 P9) is a lot different from a dash on one hull boosting and barrel rolling away for 30 minutes.

what problem is that?
The major problem I see is that if a Swarm and Fat han each do half damage, one side is down 3 ties, and the other side is down some shields and hull. Both should be worth equal points.
The same should apply to fat Miranda.
Well the ruling was a bit harsh, sure it stopped some super powerful pwt large ships but also pushed dowm less powerful large ships. And regen small ships still roam free in top lists.
Problem at this point is that is the scoring in x wing. Without objectives there is definatly skill in running away with 1-2 hull and win, since that's how the game is played. You get 75 min to shoot down points and keep yours alive, nothing more.
How much skill is doing 3 actions a turn at ps 9 compared to a turret
