Discussion Time! What is the "Perfect Game"

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

So running through a thread on how a person's experience has been horrible and people are getting bored with Armada got me thinking. "I would only get bored with Armada after a perfect game or 2"

So here is the question, what is your opinion of a perfect game?

Now dice are always an issue which is fine so go into this with the assumption that you have just higher than average rolls.

Comment away!

Did I have fun? Did I learn something? Did I give it my best? Was the game close even if I lost?

To me, that's the perfect games. Do I want to win? Yeah. But you know what... It's a game. I go to tournaments and play. Even if I lose. It's still a game. I won't become famous or rich over a skill of pushing plastic ships around. But I can test myself and have a good time with complete strangers (in some cases).

The moment you take it serious beyond the fact it's a game you've missed the point of playing.

Did I have an enjoyable time? Was the company good? Did the game end up in a nail biting situation where both my opponent and me were playing our best and it came down to that one attack, ability, maneuver or some other fun element. Games that are one sided are not that fun even when I am winning.

A perfect game is where all my fleet elements do what they are supposed to do, whether they succeed or not. A perfect game is where all of my ships have their opportunities to shoot, my fighters get engaged, and I use most of my upgrade cards.

My strategy doesn't have to be a winning one, but all i ask is that everything gets a fair shot at working so that I can learn from it if it doesn't work.

Anywhere where you killed everything and lost nothing is the perfect game for me.

So far all of my games have been as Stasy describes.

Perfect Game:

Had time to play.

Nothing got beer spilled on it.

I learned something.

Most of my games have been close to perfect.

Now as far as perfect "performance" I am NOT even close to that yet.

God mode gets boring real quick.

For me and my buddy, it's if we had fun, if we had laughs, had new stories and legends to carry between us for years to come (like my somnambulist aft gunners), and things were well played.

Our last game of IA was came right down to a single die roll. Things like that stick with us for years to come.

Hell, we play Descent too, and he now has a perpetual hate for hell hounds (flaming dwarf is burning, put it out with ale). That will forever more be an inside joke for us.

We achieve that, we've won no matter what the score at the end of a game is.

You mean I shouldn't rechristen it the ISD-IDDQD?

The moment its the IDSPISPOPD, I'm out.

If we start making up stories and the game continues beyond the game. That's my perfect game. And I'd not get bored in a long time.

I guess the thing I always judge a game on is quite simple - Can I tell a great story about it afterwards?

Even if it's just a ridiculous moment, a horrendous roll or an interesting interaction between the ships as long as there's a story there to be told we're sweet.

I just love being able to go to my friends with "Oh man played this armada game where X totally ..... "

I like games that are close and where the dice gods have been fair to both players. Completely wiping out my opponent (or vice versa) is not much fun for me, but if its been a balanced game I'm happy regardless whether I win or lose.

Hell, my first time using TIE Phantoms, Echo got into perfect position for a devastating attack and completely botched it. Total dice fail. We still reminisce about my moment of abject nerd-rage.

One were both myself and my opponent had fun. Who won is immaterial.

Unless playing at a tourney. Then it's one were I won 10-0.

Different standards for different situations.

I personalty enjoy games where the mission is 100% more important then killing the other guy

I want to see you 10-0 with the new rules.

Me too, Lyraeus....lol. That new MoV is a deucy. I think I'll be happy with a 9-1 most of the time, and would probably be ok with an 8-2..... Rolf!

You may well be right.

I have the perfect answer for this and I'm fairly confident it will achieve broad consensus. It's that game where I walked away from the table with a shiny new Mc-80. That is not only the best result I could ever hope for but also the most legendary tale. Not to mention my opponents walked away with the ships of their choice and we're happy so I've got that base covered too. It was a no doubt unqualified immortal 10.

TO CRUSH YOUR ENEMIES

TO SEE THEM DRIVEN BEFORE YOU

TO HEAR THE LAMENTATIONS OF THEIR WOMEN
