Your favourite STAR WARS NPC

By TheMOELANDER, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So let's talk NPCs. EIther about one you, WEG, FFG, WotC or a friendly GM of yours created. Just any NPC. Of course it can't be one from the movies, but solely created for Roleplaying games or perhaps novels or video games.

One of my all-time favourites is this nice woman:

Corellia_Antilles_Atlas.jpg

May I introduce to you Dr. Henrietya Antilles, or as she likes to be called: Corellia Antilles

As her nickname says, she's a corellian human Dr. of Xenoarchaeology. She was created by WEG for some of their adventures. The Inspiration for her is clear.

I mean if you don't know it, then shame on you! Go Watch Raiders of the Lost Ark.

She is known for being involved in several digs dealing with ancient Sith artifacts and sites. I really like the concept of her and I already incorporated her in an adventure of mine. One of my players was desperate to find the Starforge (even though it is destroyed) and so he went to the place where the ruin was on Dantooine, only to find the imperial university of Coruscant operating a dig site with heavy ISB surveillance and even some Stormtroopers. And then, she appeared, and asked the players if they would help her get some Rakata artifacts from the site before the Imps would haul it all away. I made her use a Synth-cable grappling hook, but I giess I'll go full-blown whip next time I use her.

I just love the idea of this character, especially because she is such an obvious Lucasfilm-internal ripoff.

Some references I made her do:

"I am selling these fine Reek-Leather jackets!"

"There, the important artifacts are inside there!" "How do you know that?" "There are security locks on the Blast-Door!"

"Do you have a plan Doctor?" "Nope! Making it up as I go!"

I wish I could have her gun down a Sith-Inquisitor who's flashing his Lightsaber a tad too much, but that would go too far.

So now your turn tell me about some of your favourite NPCs

Cool and funny NPC, might steal the concept ;)

My favourite NPC that I created is definetly the notorious Astromech of my group.
He is a R5 Series Droid, known for their high grade of personallity, that's why the series flopped.
This one is built from parts by the group (from the Long Arm of the Hutt adventure) and he is quite notorious and impulsive, often taking longer for certain tasks, annoying everyone or does the task in an unexpected way (i.e. starting the engine and frying some Stormtroopers while doing so)

He is also the one who keeps the Assassin Droid in check, which leads to some rather hilarious moments

Oh I can imagine them right now :D

Go ahead and steal Coreillia Antilles, she's not mine.

But she is part of the Legends canon

Even though you aren't looking for people from the movies, some of them make excellent NPCs. Lando is a good example. He's always got a reason to be wherever your players are. Maybe he's in town for a sabacc tournament, or he's scouting out a business deal, or he's stranded after pirates grabbed his ship. He works either as a questgiver or as a friendly rival.

If you need a contact with the Rebellion, you can't go wrong with Major Bren Darlin. He was played by famous character actor John Ratzenberger, so you can play him as any of Ratzenberger's characters (Cliff from Cheers, the piggy bank from Toy Story, etc.)

One good option for a non-canonical rival is the frustrated law enforcement agent who just knows that your PCs are responsible for nearly every incident of law-breaking in the sector, only to be thwarted over and over again by incompetent underlings and/or supervisors who are convinced he's just paranoid. Will he eventually get promoted and pose a real threat? Will he snap and launch his own attack on the PCs? Will he quit the force and offer his assistance on the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" principle?

Hey, you make a valid point. I just wanted to prevent everyone naming characters from the movies, games and TV series. BUt your reasoning behind it is really good.

And of course you can't shun the side chars. Crix Madine, Carlist Rieekan, Jan Dodonna, Walex Blissex... All great Rebellion character to help you in diverse missions

I have another favourite NPC of mine: DR3-8IN Law Enforcement droid. A hulking old droid, who had his programming messed with a Smuggler who once stole him from a local police force to make himself some protection. He tempered with his core programming and thus DR3-8IN can somehow seem like a clumsy idiotic and foolish character.

"Prime directive Number 1: Protect innocent intelligent life forms!

Prime directive Numer 2: Serve the public trust!

Prime directive N-N-N-N-N-N-uuuummmmmbbbbber 65: Dance!"

Oh. My. God. You have changed my world. How did I never notice that before?!

Note that Celia Imrie was “Fighter Pilot Bravo 5” in The Phantom Menace, so you could use that and play her as any of her other better-known characters.

I’m sure that there’s lots of actors/actresses that we can use to play this game. ;)

Hard to lock down just one NPC, there have been so many good ones over the years. In our current campaign my favorite NPC is probably Pawnee. A human female dancer in the cantina the characters own. She's a sweet supernice girl and everybodies best friend/sister. She's always happy and always see's the best in everybody. She loves cuteness, fluffiness, and all things good. She takes care of people when they're hurt or down and her boundless positive energy is one of the main draws of the cantina.

Anybody who makes Pawnee sad is in immediate trouble with the PC's. Our current story arc antagonist (the villainous Odius the Hutt who has plagued the PC's since nearly the beginning of the campaign) is responsible for kidnapping Pawnee and another NPC. It's probably not going to end well for him.

She sounds very … “bouncy” …. Are you sure that’s not the real reason why everyone is attracted to her and the cantina?

A girl who is very … “bouncy” … and does the “Happy, happy, joy, joy” dance all the time seems to me like it would be a “big attraction”.

Or did I just read that wrong? ;)

I also enjoy giving my Droids referential clever names.

For Example:

DR3-8IN, reads like Drebin, like Lt. Frank Drebin from the files of Police Squad.

P1-3P reads like "Piep", the german word for beep, which I used for an Astromech

l33tspeak can help wonders for your droid charactes to memorable names, isn't that right, R4-NDY?

LE-R0Y-GB-1V agrees. ;)

In my game one of the more memrable NPC's was a jawa survivalist guide the group hired to lead them on a kryte dragon hunt. They even let him deal the fatal blow.

Bail Organa! Great man both in the prequels and the Clone Wars series.

All of my NPC's have deep character flaws and I love it.

Here's some.

A Twi'lek Mechanic drug addict that isn't so trustworthy when tempted.

A Rodian Smuggler that will betray anyone for the right price.

A Human Trader that's too cocky for his own good.

I once created three Rodian triplets who belonged to the 'Oh clan: Ohgees , Ohmai , and Ohno . They were reoccurring baddies to haunt the player characters, reappearing even after they died*. Their sister Ohelp went by the alias Hurra and her identity wasn't revealed until much later. Ohkay is the oldest son of the clan and works to inherit the fortune but mostly tries to get away from the family in his Firespray on extended errands for the family. Ohgott is dad, running the family and estate, and Ohshii is the shrieking harpy of a mother for the entire clan.

*The players later discovered that the tripplets were reincarnating with a salvaged alien device, wiping their memory every time they reincarnated. All of them met gruesome ends, one couldn't respawn, the other was cut in half and couldn't respawn successfully, and the last was torn apart by native life. Space David Bowie stole their spaceship so there was no chance of them reincarnating further... at least in that setting.
