[SPOILERS] TFA: Rey

By SomeKittens, in Star Wars: Armada

I think who Reys parents are has sufficiently been beaten to death. Can we talk about how she was able to best Kylo Ren in their saber duel at the end of the film? How does dhe best a trained warrior?

Probably related to her parents question: If she is really the child of two force users, the innate ability is there, she runs on instinct. Same huge force ability if she comes from a force experiment / cloning.

I dont want to think about she being created as vessel for one of the Sith Lords to ensure immortaiity, as being used in comics. Luke discovered, rescued her from Snoke, force wiped her memory and put her on a backwater planet.

In my humble opinion what they tried to do with this movie is bring the Force back to its more mysterious roots of the original movies rather than the midichlorian stuff from the prequels; the force has a mysterious own will allowing fairly untrained individuals to beat better trained/more powerful ones through an innate connection coupled with some unfathomable 'will' or guidance of the force as it attempts to balance itself out. There is a big parallel between Rey beating Kylo Ren and Luke beating Vader. Yes Luke was 'fully' trained (in like what, a couple of months?) but then beat the snot out of one of the most powerful Sith ever...

They also seem to have downgraded the power of Sith/Jedi a bit. In the EU it took ridiculous forms, and in the prequels they followed that trend of Jedi being pretty much untouchable gods to ordinary humans unless caught completely unaware by dozens of well trained war veterans. In the OT yes Vader was imposing and obviously a match to ordinary troopers, but was never seen on screen as a godlike entity mowing down hundreds of rebel troops or single handedly crashing rebel ships into eachother with the force and whatnot.

In this movie we see how ordinary people with some training at melee combat (I assume part of basic stormtrooper training in the case of Finn, and Rey had years of self-taught practise with that staff) can sort of hold their own for a while at least vs trained force users, and I really liked this. I also loved the Stormtrooper close combat specialist with the vibrostaff/blade that attacked Finn

In the EU its always been said that the mosy novice jedi can beat the most advance if they fully tap into the force and let it flow and take over

I like all the theories except the Luke and Leia progeny one. My bet though is on a Skywalker child that disappeared. That the Guardian died on Jakku. Entrusting the map to the church of the Jedi but not the more valuable prize Skywalker daughter.

The junkyard guy did try to take the Droid away from her. In his own way he was trying to protect her as probably the only other being that knew who she was. He had to keep her poor and busy to keep her from leaving the planet and getting her powers recognized.

The movie mad it clear that he wanted the droid cause of the very high reward thr 1st order offered. So goven that he nickled and dimed the scavengers. I suspect he wanted bb8 cause of the huge reward offered

When I was 5, my Dads name was Dad. No mind wipe needed there. Also, my Dad did stuff in the air force, but I didn't know or understand what. What would there be to wipe, unless Mom or Dad were braggards. So, her not remembering who her parents are, is to be expected.

As for hiding her, that just seems to be the way the Jedi roll. As for checking up on her, they seem to believe in the "Raised by wolfs" school of child care. Brother sister, let them figure it out for them self. Flying around cannons shooting wamp rats for fun, no problem. Jumping out of speeders with out a chute, if you hate when he does that, why do you keep taking him up in open top speeders? Rey was left to learn for herself, and it seemed to work. Could it be someone knew this is how it would come to pass......

This is how I see it as well.

I just realized, that Fin could be related to Lando ;)

Would that be a "big" surprise or to obvious and dull???

Guy just can't catch a break.

Wish I had copied down the phrase, but after Rey touches the Skywalker LIghtsaber, Maz ( really hope we get a book about her) mentions that those she is waiting for (her family) are in the past but there is one remaining for her in the future. The phrasing struck me as Luke was the family member in her future for her.

If anyone sees TFA again, can you please get that line?

Hmmmm.... To the Nerdaverse, cast this we shall.

I cant remember the exact phrasing, but what you wrote is pretty close to it.

Also I am about 99% sure we will get a Maz book, eventually, especially with the whole "thats an interesting story" line when talking about anakin's lightsaber.

Maz (Audiobook): "What ever you've been waiting for, whomever...I can see it it your eyes, you have known all along, they're not coming back. But there's someone who still could, with your help."

I'm hoping that she's a Kenobi.

Now I'm not saying that she's necessarily Obi-Wan Kenobi's granddaughter.

But I think it would be a nice flip, having a Kenobi redeem a Skywalker after Obi-Wan failed to save Anakin from himself and then told Luke that he had to kill Anakin to defeat the Emperor. And that Skywalker is named after Obi-Wan.

That's an interesting angle that I hadn't thought about. It would be interesting for sure, but I think I'd be disappointed that the story would change focus from a skywalker to someone else.

It's still about a Skywalker.

Hell, the prequel trilogy made both trilogies about a Skywalker: Anakin. His rise, fall, and redemption. The sequels are about his legacy. Without that legacy, would Ben have become Kylo Ren?

So who's to say Finn isn't a Skywalker? I'm sure Luke had at least a few interesting offers after Endor.

Something along the lines of "you know nobody is coming back [for you on jakku] but this is one who can come back."

The first time around it seems Maz is talking about Finn. But then i realize that sge already told him he could leave if he wanted too. Instead i think Maz is refering to Luke. Context works here too because they are talking about the skywalker legacy.

Interesting. ..what if she was referring to Ben solo....aka ren

It only gets worse.
