How much more blood and treasure are you willing to spend the scour the galaxy of a spent force? Something else to consider: The US and the Soviet Union were in a state of cold war for _decades_, and despite the overwhelming evil of people like Stalin- and the monomaniacal desire for warfare from people like Curtis LeMay- you'll recall that the Cold War did not actually end in a world-devastating nuclear conflict.
I do totally agree that the key components of a cold war is intelligence and mutual fear. That- I think- is why the Republic was funding the Resistance. The fact that Leia had no idea about the super weapon until it went boom is a major failure on her part. You can probably explain that by noting that the mission she was actually pursuing was trying to find her brother. Which... I do hope she spends a bit of time kicking herself for that.

With the Rebels / Rebellion / Resistance and the Empire / First Order in decline... it looks like it should be time for Scum and Villainy to Rise!
Not that they'll ever get it all together... just too much profit in serving both sides and preventing someone else from doing the same... oh well... nevermind, back to business as usual...
It's very unlikely, as the most powerful S&V faction, the Hutts, no longer believe in military conquest. I'm very curious how the Hutts are doing in the TFA continuity - a vastly demilitarized Republic would be a playground for the various Hutt cartels (especially with Jabba out of the picture). On the other hand we are seeing a lot of Scum in TFA compared to the OT or PT.
