Space Engineers

By DariusAPB, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Ok, so this is the greatest game ever.

Now I'm running an I7, i've got a 100 m/bit connection, and free time every other weekend.

Who wants to crew an RPG carrier/fighters against AIs?

If anyone is a member of the PC master race, or has a decent PC and has never heard of space engineers - go look it up. It's fantastic.

i got it a while back on Steam and must have played it for all of 20 minutes before getting bored - what do you like about it?

This could be a long one. I apologize if I go too far here.

It's one of those games that you can do anything with, a perfect sandbox. You want to tinker with physics and just build things, you can. You want to do hardcore survival - you can.

You want to do space combat, or scenarios (any from rescue to escape to anti-pirate/combat ops) you can.

Me, I really love my simulations/RPGs, so doing something like a PVE cruise with a group of us all co-oping one one ship - amazing, I love co-op games.

So i'm on my headset advising my team mates that i'm offloading resources, or bringing a captured ship in, or requesting cover/extraction etc, yeah.

I love that you can without that much issue build Scenarios, you can really make your own challenges in this game. For example: I want to make a space flight/atmospheric flight capable light dropship for extracting friendlies to a space station/mothership. Not as easy as it sounds!

I love that it has steam workshop support, for where I don't want to build my own capital ship, I can just use someones model to game with.

I've explained elsewhere before that I have a huge love of abandoned space stations, wrecked space ships and rescue missions. This has all of that, if i crash a ship, the wreck remains. If a boobytrapped Military escort blows and i survive it then that half a ship is floating through space. Maybe it can be repaired. Hell, wreckage after a battle is beautiful!!! I was running a test on a torpedo frigate, which manufactured and gravity fired it's own torpedoes for greater than 1KM range weapons, a salvo took the front end of a big red right off!!!!!! The destruction is gorgeous!

And sometimes, the game is just fun to **** around on. I remember flying a fighter through the hangar deck of a friends "blue" ship he was playing with. I love the damage!

I'll admit that I am a massive SE fanboy, it's perhaps my favourite game ever and I can't wait till more AI can be implemented. I want battles. Epic battles, and I want to stare at the beautiful aftermath.

Also, now with planets, I want to destroy a planet.

I want to see it both sides, I want to see an enemy capital ship's thruster die, knowing that i just knocked out it's reactor. Knowing i've got them.

I want to panic as oxygen levels go from high to zero, indicating hull breach. Or maybe critical damage to reactor/drive engines/weapons. Previously i've loved when my ship took a direct hit to the gyros and i'm force to eject as it spins out of control, or if the cockpit is knocked out of commission and the ship just flies out of control out of the area.

Right now a friend and I are running a game where on an earthlike map we both started in landers, we've landed ,cannibalized the landers, built a base are mining. I've named the planet "Eden" and in my head we are the "Eden" mission. It helps that the base we've built inadvertently looks like something out of the first mass effect. Soon we'll build a transport rover for better traversal and resource location. Eventually we'll seek out the pirates on the planet, in an armed mission. Eventually we'll start hauling resources into orbit to build a space station, and prepare forces to reclaim my original spawn base on a marslike planet.

Awesome write up, thank you. I will have to give it another spin when I get more free time

It's one of those games that really is what you make of it. Myself, love that kind of thing.

I actually just picked this game up when the steam sale started. I've only had time to get through some of the tutorial so far, but it does appear to have a lot of potential. I'm going to try to build an X-Wing as my first ship.

Aight, so I gotta share this. Because people here love space combat.

I ran a game with cargo ships enabled, no planets, invaders mod and the midship scan mod (for derelicts).

Invader carrier spawned. I was on creative mode so spawning ships (as owned by me so my turrets worked), huge battle, i lost about a dozen fighters, carrier lost about a dozen fighters, i lost a frigate, it was reinforced by a flotilla of destroyers. huge battle GOOD TIME. anyway, carrier was a big heavy armoured hulk. i took all it's guns and engines out, it still had a reactor somewhere... whatever.

I had modified a light gunboat to have a heavy armoured prow with landing gear on it. Gunboat was a square affair, 6 turrets, 2 missile 4 gatling. There was an invader raiding station spawned sending Assailer class fighters at me.

pointed the carrier at it, ramming speed. 3 fighters coming in, first two flew past me, disabled a thruster, i have 5 more, whatever. my guns take care of them for me.

Third fighter, flying down at a 45 degree angle at me, hits the carrier, spints 360 on it's vertical axis, spins, hits my ship - taking the roof off of my gunboat, (so that you could see me sitting at the control console) then spinning out into the black. I ram the remains of the carrier clear through the station, utterly destroying it. Lots of wreckage /scan only picks up unowned. Save game, tick the option to reset all owners to nobody, restart. /scan

I go towards first derelict - not one of mine or enemy, completely powered down "explorer class" I attach my gunboat, turn off engines, reset owner of explorer to me, power it up. Shiny. Next thing I find, some cross shaped space station. Cool, owner to me, power on. Hah - whoever set those booby trapped guns didn't think of that. Got me a base next to a roid now. regroup my fleet at my new shiny base, did some patch jobs on the gunboat, and adjusted scan range to max (50000 metres) find the Assailer that hit me, that's now at base as a trophy. Am doing missions to retrieve bits of space ship.

Losses: 1 Falcon class destroyer. 4 Barracuda class fighters, 2 Zombie class gunboats, 2 Daemon class gunboats, 4-6 locust class fighters.

Kills: 1 Huge Carrier class ship, 12 Licoric class fighters, (4 waves of 3) roughly a half dozen Assailor class (one captured). 6 "Green Squadron" DD destroyers. (I wanted to capture one, but my focus was the carrier). 1 Private sail (unarmed as far as i can tell, but same enemy faction, targeted and destroyed as target of opportunity).

Gains: 1 Explorer class vessel, 1 small starbase.

Current objectives: build a heavy armoured, purposely slow acceleration designated tugboat for retrieval missions.

Gut station, add conveyors and turrets.

Continue to target enemy invader and cargo ships.

Search for more derelicts on long range patrols.

Hey Darius,

I've been thinking of getting back into SE, do you still play somewhat regularly? What mods do you use? It sounds like you are much deeper into it than I have been, but I think it'd be interesting to have someone to play with.

PS Cooperative is the name of the game.

I've not ran it for a little while, because i could never find anyone really to play with.

Mods vary, but typically i like adding AI that aggressively seeks. I rarely go mod heavy. I do use a derelict scanner.

I'd like to do a group thing where it's a small carrier with repair/mining/fighter squadron fighting AI's, repairing, mining ,building bases etc.

That's my dream.

That's the dream I've had as well. It would be amazing to have a large ship with a crew to man battlestations. The battlestations are easy enough to create. The crew, on the other hand, tends to be elusive. I'm going to try and get myself back up to speed this weekend. If you ever decide to get back into it, PM me details. I would be more than happy to join forces. :)

Well i'm only typically available every other weekend or so, but you know what. I'm down for this.

Steam DariusAPB

I might not be good at designing big intricate projects. But i'll take down a hostile and drag back the wreckage to be repurposed.

I'll add you when I get on after work. We'll have to design a couple XG-1's to help take down those hostiles. :P

OH they exist.

I should add I do other games as well, but am 100% co-op. Multiplayer vs just tends to make me ugly.

Same here. :)

All we need to do now is advertise here for likeminded individuals to form a crew.

Maximum co-op, killing space pirates.

Fairly sure I can get at least one of my friends in on this. He's more in the base building role. I'm the fighter jockey.

My brother plays occassionally. He's more of a fighter as well. I usually handle base layout, large ships, and resource gathering.

That gives us a mission control team and a fighter flight.

I've got a friend who plays it a lot but he's more into making huge mining ships. not interested in the combat side at all.

I'm excited to see where this goes. The hype is making it hard to focus on work. :P

Probably no-where yet. Given player redundancies, and ideal set play times, we probably want at least 8 people on the rotation.
