Do I need to buy the TFA Core Set for the TIE/fo stuff or can I get it all just by buying TIE/fo expansions? I don't run Rebels so the T-70 would just be given away. I suppose new obstacles would be fun, and I've heard the new damage deck is more kind. But I don't know if it's worthwhile to get the new Core Set over using the same money for expansions.
TFA Core Set vs. TIE/fo expansions
There's pilots and, potentially, upgrades in the core you wont get in the expansion...plus it's 2 more f/o TIEs.
There is this guy named Poe that you'll want to get.

What Bitharne said, plus you'll need the new damage deck if you ever play official tournaments.
Additional nice things from the new core set: the new Asteroids have interesting shapes and there's a big glossary with all of the rules and rules cards to date (as of printing at least, but more things in one place than before.) If you make your own missions, there are some minefield tokens in there as well.

Actually, no. FFG reneged on their previous ruling and - for the time being - both decks are acceptable.

As always with ffg until there's a large enough forum uproar.
To the op, the ties with expansion are probably better, so if you're budget is really constrained, go with the expansion, but wired and epsilon leader are good, ditto for zeta ace, plus the rocks and dice. Also you get the very well thought out damage deck
Get 1 expansion for the unique pilots and the damage deck. Buy additional TIEs as expansions. They come with Juke and Advanced Coms upgrades which are awesome.
The Juke/Comm Relay upgrades really make the expansion quite superior. You'll be missing out on several interesting unique pilots, but other than that the core is not great for TIEs.
Omega Leader as super Wingman is pretty cool, the two barrel roll guy also is fun. Upgradewise you get Wired in the core, which is nice, but probably not too interesting for FOs (makes for hilariously tanky A-Wings, though). Juke is a card that you will want to own many of. Its an infinite Crackshot whenever you can denie your opponent his actions and have an evade token.
Epsilon Leader is the really strong /fo pilot from the FA core set IMO. That much stress reduction can be p. huge. If you want to fly /fos, I'd definitely get both, and Juke is decent enough that it might be worth taking on non-/fos that get Evade, but falls into a VERY competitive slot and you only get one per blister which kind of sucks. Comm relay is excellent but expensive, and I think actually fits bet on Red Ace rather than most /fos.
Edited by thespaceinvaderThanks for all the replies. Looks like I'll pick up the TFA Core Set next instead of 3 TIE/fo expansions (I already have 1). With a little luck, maybe I can trade the T-70 and Rebel cards for a 4th TIE/fo, or at least a discount on one.

There are many Rebel players that I'm sure would be interested in trading with you. It has already happened in my group.
All the coreset has for FOs is zeta ace and ep leader
You'll want it for other things, but after you get one then load up on expacs
June + relay MAKE the ship, and Omega & Zeta Leaders are quite powerful
Edited by ficklegreendiceEpsilon Leader is useful. And it's 2 ties plus new asteroids and damage deck. Even if you throw the rebels in the trash it's a good buy.
I have 1 TFA core and 1 of each expansion for the TIE/fo and T-70 X-wing. I'm glad I got the core because I want to fly both TIEs and X-wings, but if I were only flying a TIE squad, I'd just want a bunch of the TIE/fo expansion pack for the Juke + Comm Relay combo.
