Hey y'all, I will write up a more full article over on wwpd.net shortly, but this is mostly a quick brain dump.

Played my first 400pt Wave 2 tournament yesterday at the excellent Dragon's Den in Richmond VA.

I brought:

ISD II: Motti, Gunnery Teams, ECM, Leading Shots

ISD II: Avenger, Gunnery Teams, ECM, Leading Shots

Major Rhymer

Dengar

5x TIE Bombers

1x TIE Advanced

GAME ONE:

I played against Simon who was running an Ackbar MC80 w/ Home One, Intel Officer and some other upgrades I can't remember. He had 2 whales each w/ enhanced armament, Gunnery Teams, and ECM (I think?). He had 2 A-Wings and Jan Ors.

I went 2nd and he chose Advanced Gunnery. Avenger was my objective ship while Home One was his.

My ISDs went crashing in and then split up chasing down stragglers. Avenger nailed a Guppy in a single activation (4 bombers to weaken it, then two whacks with Avenger- ouch!)

In the end both Guppies went down and Ackbar had 7 hull damage for a 9-1.

GAME TWO:

Was against Eric who ran Ackbar w/ 2 Guppies and Yavaris. I forget what the Guppies had, but Gunnery Teams ECM were likely. I was again player 2 in Superior Positions. He had a ton of fighter cover- Wedge, Dutch, an X-Wing, Jan, an A-Wing and 2 B-Wings.

My ISDs were able to catch him in a good spot since we did Superior Positions, and hammered away at his ships. In the end, I took down all 3 of his ships, but Avenger was hurting with 11 damage on her hull. 10-0

GAME THREE:

Was against Jeff, and was an absolutely fantastic game.

Jeff was running Rieekan with 2 Guppies. Each had ECM and Flight Controllers(!). He also had an MC30 with Ordnance Experts and Admonition. He had the Rebel fighter pantheon with Wedge, Dutch, Han, Dash, Jan, Nym and they were all painted very well.

We again did Superior positions with me as player two. Jeff deployed very smartly and split his force aways trying to entice me to give chase. I did not oblige, which meant the game was mostly bloodless except for the one guppy of his I nailed. I managed to score a few more Superior Position points than he did, but he iced most of my fighters by the end. It was a fantastic game, that wound up a 7-3 for me.

With that I had a total of 26 points which secured the top spot. For being relatively new to squadrons, I found I absolutely loved running the bombers. The two ISDs were whale hunters, as they Ahab'd 5 of those blubbery beasts throughout the day.

This is really promising. I've got several double ISD lists in the works. Do you feel that your Rhymerball was crucial to your success?? How did you feel going with Tie Bombers over Firesprays?

Boy, I wonder what the answer is to the ISD's from the Rebel point of view. I ran a dual AF list against my single ISD list and while I did get the ISD down, I was close to losing the 2nd Guppy and my Neb B.

A few different dice rolls and that could have been a much different outcome.

That is the question, two ISDs and a Rhymer Ball is bad times.

Do you feel that your Rhymerball was crucial to your success?? How did you feel going with Tie Bombers over Firesprays?

So the Firesprays are awesome too... but the Rhymerball synergizes well with Avenger. Squadron with Avenger and hit with 4 bombers- gonna use any defense tokens? if not, they're gonna hurt. If you do, Avenger is gonna hurt.

That being said, I haven't tried a Fireball yet, but I did have one wreck me pretty good.

This happened to me. I took a bad Projector Misalignment on home one right before it was Engine Tech book it time. Rhymer ball plus Avenger ravaged me like a virgin on prom night.
