Why TFA is demonstrably better than ROTJ (spoilers!)

By GrimmyV, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Right now it's the honeymoon period where people are just glad it's not the prequels, give it a few months to sink in it'll go down in people's estimations, right now people are hyped and giving it more credit than it deserves.

It's okay but that's all it is they remade a new hope to play it safe which really is the issue most people have.

I didn't come out hating it at all but a few hours later I'm already forgetting parts of it I can't even think of a qoute I'll be using while playing.

"That's not how the force works!"

"Sanitation?!"

"I'm helping you because it's the right thing to do!" "You need a pilot." "I need a pilot"

"OK, Big Deal"

"Who talks first? Do you talk first? Do I talk first?"

"Of course I'm with the Resistance. This is what a Resistance fighter looks like"

"I know how to run without you holding my hand!"

"I never ask that question until I've done it!"

"Ok, stay calm... stay calm" "I am calm." "I was talking to myself!"

"What about that ship?" "That one's garbage" BOOM! "Garbage will do!"

None usable, not one? Good heavens this one had more quotable lines than the entire prequels combined.

And most of those are Finn's. Gotta admit I actually like that guy.

"That's not how the force works!" : Some of us in the movie theather were thinking the same at some points during the movie.

And the mandatory "I have a bad feeling about this." It's not SW without that line.

"Chewie we're home." I'm gonna start saying that whenever I walk into the local gamestore. ;)

There were quite a few good lines. Also, some of the very funniest lines weren't actually lines at all, but rather non-verbal head movements or expressions by Chewbacca.

I think it was definitely better than ROTJ. After mulling it over for a few days, I think I'd put it on about equal footing with episodes IV and V. It had some real problems that those two did not; but it also had some strengths that those two didn't have. For me, the plusses and minuses balanced out in such a way that I put it in the top three of the series, and have had a hard time figuring out how to order those top three, so I've just awarded them all a status of "tied."

I'll tell you why.

It didn't have stupid friggin' teddybears defeating The Empire.

Force is an energy field. Then it was symbiotic bacteria. Now it's explained as an energy field again.

It was always an energy field. The prequels just felt the need to explain why some beings are able to perceive and manipulate it while others aren't, and make it sound all sciency and crap.

the first.. erm.. at least one of the first things on my list, once I have mastered time travel, is to go back and erase the few lines of midichlorian-crap from the scripts. won't save the movies, but it will save a lot of faith in the schwartz. ;)

Just kill Lucas before the prequels go into production.

And do Micheal Bay to before he ruins transformers!

And bring me back some toys from the 80's!

Do Michael bay before he ruins every movie he's touched.

Thumbs up BB8. Say no more.

The space portions of Endor make ROTJ my favorite of the OT and my favorite Star Wars film so far though I'm hoping VIII or IX has something to displace Endor from my favorite Star Wars movie battle.

That said TFA was great but not quite up to the Ot's standards. Too much a rehash of ANH and I still think whoever decided all the Resistance starfighters in the film should be upgraded X-Wings needs to be fired asap. The T-70s are cool and I would be fine with them being the majority of the resistance fightercraft we see but come on. Even in ANH the rebels had multiple starfighters classes an there is no way you can convince me they didn't have the resources needed to give the Resistance multiple fighter models for TFA.

@Black Knight Leader,

You seem to be a big fan of the old EU and yet you're irked that Rey could just use force powers without training, yet Luke did that in Empire and Kyle Katarn did that in the entirety of Dark Forces: Jedi Knight. Heck, Leia could sense and communicate with Luke before she even knew she had the force and Anakin used it as a child to react fast enough in Podraces.

Rey seemed to be in heavy denial that she had the force at first, even afraid when she felt it. She likely was using it all her life and never noticed it.

I also don't very much get the idea of them feeling like Star Wars fans in the movie.

It seems like they knew very little of history that took place 30 years prior. Seems accurate to real life. I don't really know a much about the history of the 80's other than some of the whacky hairstyles and clothes people wore. Everything was just a myth or legend to Rey and Finn about some Republic hero that is no longer around.

@Patox

Star Wars doesn't really have many rules though. Everything is subject to change to fit the story being told.

Force is an energy field. Then it was symbiotic bacteria. Now it's explained as an energy field again.

Lukevhad traing in between the movies, also his training with yoda took a month, despite how short of time it looked to take in the movie. Kyle was taught how to use the forc3 from the jedi spirits in the valley of the jedi.

There some force powers that can be used on accident without training. How Ray uses her mind trick ability is awkward. How she goesbabout using it is like someone who already knew how to use that ability. There was nothing in this movie that gives evidence shevwas a jedi in training, even then mind tricks are not a ability the young are taught to use i believe.

I am however betting she is thevdaughter of star killer clone 11xx and the daughter of juno. What alot of people dont know is that the guy who playsvas star killer was in the force awakens movie.

Well besides what i wrote, they feel like star wars fans sucked into a sw movie because of ther lingo and how they interact with the rest of the sw universe. The way they talk about their own actions or talk to or about other characters feels l8ke they know them through a out of universe method. How they get excited about things they accomplish reminds me more of fans who are playing a sw game doing the same things their fav characters did in the movies.

I'll tell you why.

Really... and when does this happen in any sw movie? It didnt happen in rotj. They may have gotten a few kills but it doesnt compare to howmany of them were slaughtered by walkers and troopers. It also doesnt matter how many imps they killed because in the end of the day they had no way of getting into the imperial bunker. Without solo and the other reb commandos, the ewoks would have done even less to the empire.

Without luke being on endor it would have been a steamroll for the empire since most their legion was searching for more rebels. Be it rebs by themselves, ewoks by themselves, or them all together but without luke ever coming to endor, theybwould be facing at-ats, navy commandos, more storm commandos, dark trooper commanders, and a hell of alot more storm troopers.

Please no, there lots of sw fans that like ep 1-3, and the majority of movie fans, not exclusive sw fans, like ep 1-3. 3 being the best. I think i like 3 more than 7 just because of darth sidious alone.

Do Michael bay before he ruins every movie he's touched.

Please no, the rock was a good movie... also transformers three makes 1vand 2 better when you seevthat the decpticons were just pulling their punches the whole time up to three. Then they kicked the crap outa everyone.

Nothing can out do the endor space battle, NOTHING. The closest we can get is force of arms from robotech. Oh and the yf-19 earth reentry scene in macross plus, the Japanese movie version not the english four part tv series version.

yeah.. Michael Bay.. the male Sarah Connor (not in "as sexy" but in "we have to try again and again, just to make sure john connor something like transformer movies don't ever come to live").

he's definitely on the list. he ruined so many not-so-good movies into pretty-horrible-ones.. it's not even funny.

best AND ONLY! transformer movie is from 1986.

no movie was made after that.. *repeats his mantra*

meh.. youtube, germany.. legal sh*t..

I can't play the theme by "Lion" :-/

but found this, also quite nice ;)

now, that's more like it :D:

I don't know if I was more traumarized at age 10 by everyone dying in transformers (spoilers!) or my 6 year old girl watching Han Solo get stabbed.

I still cry when ironhide dies to Megatron.

Tearing up right now.

Optimus Prime died for our sins :)

Speaking of: At first they were gonna kill off Duke in the G.I.Joe movie to, but because of the response to the tragic death of Optimus, they re-edited him into a coma from wich he would awake at the end of the movie. (And now you know, because knowing is half the battle)

My friend is taking his 10year old daughter to TFA on sunday. I wonder how that wil pan out. I was pretty pissed at Han dying myself. me: *chakes fist at the heavens* "ABRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMS!!!"

Transformers beastwars Dinobot vs all the Predacons only to fall against Megatron, after he has wrecked them all.

Best.

Death.

Ever.

I can see what you mean. The over all coherence is definitly stronger, but ROTJ has hands down some of the most impactful scenes of the entire franchise. These moments are special and so well done that none of the other movies reaches it and it helps me overlook the bad parts. I liked TFA a lot. It is good, it has calm moments that make me love the characters, but ROTJ has the whole throne room scene, Vaders burial and the best space battle. While it also has a considerable amount of jank, these fantastic moments make up for it.

My ranking of Star Wars movies is pretty indifferent now. Probably ESB > ANH > ROTJ >= TFA > ROTS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TPM >= AOC

Not much changed and also not unusual, but I wouldn't have TFA expected to come close to any of the OT movies.

If the had the magic of friendship Unicron would have been done for much faster =p Anyway I didn't like that movie very much, its the events in the middle of it that sucks, to me at least.

I think the best Transformers thing ever is Fall of Cybertron. Combaticons!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed and, as hackneyed as it might be, I thought a lot of Han's responses and/or translations of Chewie were very funny - "I do! Every time!" and "Oh, YOU'RE cold? Let's go" really made me chuckle.
