Spoilers: My take on Phasma

By GrimmyV, in X-Wing Off-Topic

It's easy to say that Captain Phasma was hyped up only to fizzle in the movie. After all the person with even less screen time is Poe (j/k). And yes she doesn't seem to have much to do when she is on screen, and maybe there are some cut scenes that would elaborate on her role. But...

I wonder about why she basically let herself be used to get captured and turn off the shields when she should have totally resisted and tried to escape or warn someone, knowing that if she died in the attempt that at least the intruders would be stopped. Well, what if she was actually sympathetic in some way to stopping StarKiller Base from being used again. Maybe Finn's defection actually affected her somehow, made her think about what the FO was doing and if it was the right path.

Or maybe she was distracted with female problems (I know, that's sexist, but someone was gonna say it!)

Any other deep thoughts on Super Tall Shiny Stormy?

Wait for Episode VIII, I bet we'll get insight. (ok, a NOT-so-deep thought, lol)

Not every leader has to be heroic. She was an administrative leader. She seemed dedicated to her duty. She checked on Finn, and though she was not "kind" or "Comforting", she was concerned with his well being on an "imperial" level. I like how Disney is portraying women in many different lights these days. They don't ALL need to be these heroic butt-kicking warriors.

Phasma has attention to detail, duty, and leadership. Would be nice if we got to see her shoot some, but I had heard that she wasn't going to be HEAVILY featured in this film. I DO hope to see her show up next film. That costume is just insane!

Well now the character development is done, ep8 is clear to be another empire strikes back. Hopefully that means the FO blitzkrieg is all about kicking a** and taking names, where Phasma would shine.

In the visual dictionary that came out friday, the command structure of the FO puts Phasma essentially equal to Kylo and Hux ('captain' is not an accurate title). And a fun note, the chrome on her armor comes a salvaged naboo yacht once owned by Palpatine.

Captain might be her position rather than her technical rank. It's one of those words that has multiple meanings depending on context.

She seemed like a character that was designed to sell toys. Nothing more. Lets put someone in cool armor like Boba Fett. Then once they had that character they didn't know what to do with her. There might be some deleted scenes or a directors cut that gives the character more depth, but all she did was get herself captured. Then without much trouble, disabled the shields on the huge super weapon. As a leader and soldier for the FO she sucks. We actually don't even know if she survives.

Really disappointed as Brienne of Tarth is one of my favorite GoT characters.

There's a good chance at that. I can still hope otherwise though because I don't want to concede to the disappointment :o

Here is her description from the Visual Dictionary

Charged with commanding the stormtrooper forces of the First Order, Phasma's true rank is higher than the simplistic label "captain" would suggest. Although her position could easily afford her a well-appointed war room far from the battlefield, Phasma insists on seeing combat operations firsthand, and shuns any comfortable trapping of elevated rank. She wears distinctive chromed armor that broadcasts her authority, but also makes clear that she is a woman of action who fights alongside those under her command.

Thing about Phasma is, she's perfectly Star Wars.

Look at ESB. You get Boba fett, an awesomely armoured man who looks imposing and bad ass. Know what he does? Shoots at Luke twice and misses, sucks up to Vader, and then flies away.

You might have watched ESB and thought "Well Boba SEEMED cool, but I hope he gets more of a role!". So you get Return of the Jedi, where he looks imposing, then dies like a panzy to a have-blind man. Pay off? Not really.

Now look at Episode 1! You get a scary new Villain! Red and Black faced! Horned! Tattoos! Wow what an awesome guy! He says one line then gets chopped in half... oh man. Well at least he killed someone?

Attack of the Clones! Wow! A shapeshifter in Star Wars! What an idea! What possibilities can this open up? Oh... they died... okay.

Finally, well Revenge had Grievous, the cool looking coward with an evil laugh worthy of Vaudeville.

Now, there's a sliding scale of some who fought and some who didn't, some who drove the plot and some who didn't. However, Star Wars is a treasure trove of cool looking character that the story-line could have otherwise have thrown away and no one would care. Know what purpose these characters serve? 1. To make action figures. 2. To allow writers, Fans and children come up with really cool back stories for the people.

Grievous, Boba and Maul all are so cool in the EU legends and Canonical works! I bet you Phasma will be too.

I was astounded that, despite being one of the First Order's stormtroopers raised from birth on a diet of brutality and propaganda, she was willing to shut off a whole planet's shields and risk thousands of First Order lives to save her own neck.

Maybe she wasn't trained like the other stormtroopers?

I'm okay with it as is. We don't need every single character to have their own storyline, really. It'll end up like Game of Thrones which, while fantastic, is extremely convoluted and it can be hard to follow so many stories. I'm sure we'll see more of her later, but we've gotta pace ourselves. We only had two, two and a half hours of movie, unlike GoT where we have around 10 per season.

Also, I wanna point out that I'm glad she kept the helmet on. We don't need to get super personal with every baddie. SHe's still a stormtrooper. I expected them to make her take it off just to show off the actress.

I know they can't give much to every character, but Phasma seemed almost like a troll. The actress herself has been on a bunch of panels and had appearances. Did she know why she was doing these things that her character would have like 3 or 4 lines of dialog and maybe 2 or 3 minutes of screen time?

I felt the same with Finn. I like the concept of the character but his personality and back story don't jive. He seemed too goofy and not serious enough for a person groomed by birth to be a Stormtrooper. Also, it didn't make sense that he was in sanitation. I guess the First Order has Stormtroopers doing everything in their military ranks.

Its Boba Fett all over again. If you are not a sith lord and you wear cool armor, you won't get enough screen time and go out in a bad way. At least Boba had a fight scene and showed of his balls by talking back to lord Vader...

Overall the villains were dissapointing.

Phasma looked cool, but had nothing to do and went out like a punk.

Kylo ren is right about one thing, he is no Darth Vader. More like Darth Emo.

General Hux is an anoying git, that would have been force shoked by vader on sight.

Lord Snoke is- Seriously? Snoke? That's his name? That's the best you could come up with huh? Lord Snape would have been better.

And the flame troopers! One scene at the beginning and we never see these guys again! Why? They are cool!

I thought it was super-weak that she just gave up when they found her. A real Imperial would have made them shoot. You know they're trying to destroy the planet/base. Your life is worth more than all that infrastructure and people?

A lot of hype when she was cast. A lot of toys sold since September. Nothing memorable about her in the movie other than the chrome. No expectation that neither she nor Ren actually survived the destruction of the Starkiller Base.

Ren probably got away.

Sigh...

Maybe he was in Sanitation, the clean up of unwanted villages and people?

Apparently in the canon books he is portrayed as an ideal and model stormtrooper with too much empathy.

That too me was a big problem with the prequels. I could deal with Jar Jar, and the cringe worthy humor. But every movie had another major bad guy. They had no time to become scary.

Phasma : TFA :: Fett : RotJ

Just sayin'.

Ren probably got away.

Sigh...

On my second watching, I noticed a lot of time passed between the Rey Ren fight and when the planet actually exploded.

A) they see the falcon flying, then all of a sudden the falcon is landed with chewy helping carry Fin.... leisurely at that.

B) Poe announces "there they are, we found them", or something like that, which implies they were looking for a while and after the FO has retreated.

I can't imagine the FO triumvirate (hux / phasma / kylo) not having enough time to get off starkiller.

I thought it was super-weak that she just gave up when they found her. A real Imperial would have made them shoot. You know they're trying to destroy the planet/base. Your life is worth more than all that infrastructure and people?

I was just about to write something similar she's the officer in charge of keeping storm troopers in line but when threatened she folds instantly did not jive.

Massive waste of a talented actress.

My take on Phasma is that she's going to give Finn a new hole to go to the bathroom with.

Several, probably.

I think (and hope) that Phasma will be back with a bigger, more important role.

Perhaps Phasma was the Biggs Darklighter of the new movie? Biggs supposedly had a number of scenes including the Yavin hangar scene and Tosche Station that were left on the cutting room floor during the original production. All we're left with is a few seconds of him reporting in and getting shot down. There's already been a story of a scene missing in the movie where Chewbacca rips the arms off the junk dealer when he comes to the cantina looking for the Falcon (now where have I seen a movie where somebody loses a limb in a cantina before?).

My personal theory is that Brienne of Tarth was abducted into the Star Wars universe. Forced into work on Jakku, she had just settled in for the night in the village which was her new home when a number of great flying things appeared over the horizon. Out of their opening maws came a number of armored warriors who began to slaughter the overwhelmed inhabitants. Remembering the vows she took in Westeros to protect the innocent, she quickly made her way to the nearest stormtrooper that she could take down without being seen and shot. This one was taller, in a silver suit of armor much like those of the knights she used to know of. Coming up behind and silently dispatching the officer, Brienne quickly put on the armor with the intent of fighting the white warriors. 'Who would have thought there was somebody else here just as tall as I am!' she thought.

When she came out into the open however, she saw a robed figure with a sword made of fire stick out his hand and stop a blaster bolt. Tales of wizardry and the powers of magic flooded her mind as she remembered the shadowy demon that killed her former king. By the time she was able to overcome this trepidation, the stormtroopers were already firing into the few survivors that remained. Quickly being noticed by her supposed subordinates, she vowed to use this disguise to redeem her honor by fighting these evil figures.

The rest of the movie shows her trying her best to fulfill the role of a leader of an organization that she had no prior knowledge of. This included a half hearted disciplinary speech to one of the warriors that seemed overly distraught. Finally she was captured by this same man who was accompanied by an elderly man and what had to have been a troll of some kind. The former warrior waved his weapon in her face until the old man brought him in line and demanded that she disable the shields. Not knowing where the armory was at where the extra shields might be stored, she punched a few of the colored buttons at random. This seemed to have accomplished what they wanted. She still feigned the role of the identity that she had taken over, but she hoped that this might be one first step towards the redemption of her honor. Maybe the lack of proper shields would make the white warriors more vulnerable to archers or cavalry?

As she was thinking this, the troll picked her up and promptly threw her down a garbage chute.

Perhaps Phasma was the Biggs Darklighter of the new movie?

Ello Asty is the Biggs Darklighter of the new movie ;)
