How do you block?

By nitrobenz, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Here comes Tournament season and I'm looking to make a somewhat competitive list. My background for competitive flying in this game has historically been a Howlrunner swarm, but I want to try something different this year since I have a wider variety of ships at my disposal now :) In the TIE swarm format I am a reasonably good blocker so I want to leverage that experience toward supporting something that hits harder; in this case the Outrider.

Depending on the loadout my Outrider runs around 50-55 points which leaves 45-50 points for the rest of my list. So far I've tried 3A's and really enjoyed getting those guys under the skin of my opponents, the boost is great for getting right where they need to be, but green dice are fickle and the two reds can be lacking against turtled up targets. I'm looking for some other opinions on ways to supplement my big gun here: 4 x Z-95's could cover a little more space with a little less flexibility, 2 x B-wing E/2's with intelligence agents seem like they could predict the perfect place for a barrel roll and have the firepower and durability to last through a battle, and I could just as well fit in 2 x Y-wings with turrets (maybe stresshog?).

I'll be trying these three alternatives over the next while -- Is there another good option that I'm missing here?

Maybe another yt-2400 with Intelligence agent (and eventually anti-pursuit laser/ion proj.)

Large base + Barrel Roll may be helpful to block

Here's a slight variation on Theorist's list to make it easier to fly:

Dash Rendar w/ push the limit, outrider, HLC, kyle katarn & engine = 58

Eaden Vrill w/ HLC, intel agent & ion projector (or anti-pursuit lasers) = 42

100

Now the main thing to remember with Vrill is you are taking him primarily for PS3 (shooting before PS 2 is nice these days, and you don't need to block filler ships, just kill them). Against high PS aces, its simple: Vrill uses intel agent so you know where they're going, then barrel roll onto that spot and let Dash fire the kill shot. Against anything you can't block (at the moment) that stresses itself and ends up out of Vrill's arc, well silently thank your opponent and let Vrill open up with an extra attack die.

Two HLCs give you lots of firepower and its got a nice bag of tricks, but its not an easy list to use. Despite having 5 hull + 5 shields each, your ships can die quick to focus fire, so you need to be tricksy. Sometimes it worth flying Vrill right into a couple enemy ships just so they can't shoot him. Practice will help you figure out when to be aggressive and when to be cautious.

Good luck!

I use a slightly paired down dash with 2 b wings. Dash is outrider, r2d2, hlc, lone wolf.

The only list that has so far had me on lock down is a Miranda and 2 k wing tlt with tactitian list.

At the moment I only have the one YT-2400; however I did consider trying chewie with two Intel Agents, Expert Handling (for the BR), and maybe Anti-Pursuit Lasers. Ultimately I decided that although the Large base Barrel Roll is awesome and can cover a lot of space it was a step back in terms of firepower from any of my half-swarms and stressing to get the roll limits blocking options the next turn...

If I pick up a second YT-2400 I will definitely try something like this. They are remarkably nimble with the natural BR and Vrill makes a lot of sense as an Ace blocker since he also punishes Soontir for pushing even if he doesn't get the block.

Thanks for the input guys :)

a pair of PTL + Crackshot Green Squadrons or, if you're man enough to go without the EU, trio of refit Prototypes are exactly what you're looking for
