10/22/16 V4.2 Edit: Added some new errata and the errata handed out by FFG. I updated about a third of all of the suggested squads as there were a lot of dated squads. Also, I added a few things in the strategy section at the beginning of the guide.
X-Wing Beginner's Guide
Thank you, this is great. I love this for both reference and quick games. It makes it easy to pick your favorite ship and see a squad around it.
Questions:
- It down loads as 4.3 but still says 4.2?
- Also, how does one tell Official Errata as in Dead Eye and your suggested Errata as in Fel's Wrath?
10/29/16 V4.3 Edit: Added the Heroes of the Resistence pilots and upgrades as well as updated a few of the optional suggested casual errata. I still need to add the Heroes of the Resistence cards into the Suggested Squads sections, but the Suggested Squads are updated
excluding
HotR. Also, official errata is in
red
while suggested casual errata is not.

I accidentally saved the last version of 4.3 even though it was actually 4.2. Now it is correct. Also, red errata is official errata while the rest is not.
1/21/17 V4.5 Edit: I skipped uploading my 4.4 edit, because the new mini-wave of U-wing and TIE Striker came out before I could upload the changes. Sorry I am so late getting this uploaded! The TIE Striker, U-wing, and all upgrades from those expansions are included throughout the guide. I modified the Suggested Squads throughout the guide accommodating for the new ships as well as Heroes of the Resistance. I also included some new suggested errata for casual games (ignore for competitive play of course!). Remember, the official errata is in red!
Wow!!!
1/21/17 V4.5 Edit: Whoops... I noticed a formatting error after I uploaded. Yikes! I have now fixed it.

I'm not planning on getting Wave X soon. I wouldn't mind having your 4.4 if it is done. No point doing extra work but if you have it that would be awesome.
P.S. I'm look over the current one. As usual you do fantastic work. I love it.

Sorry but I saved over the top of 4.4 :/ ... I didn't think people would want a dated version.
Thanks for your work, I'm a rookie player (just started to play a week ago) and I find your guide quite useful!

Thanks a lot for this guide! This is a great asset for new players (and not so new :-) ) as the number of upgrades/pilots becomes larger and larger !
I think it would make a fantastic addition to squad builders. I've developed a squad building and simulation tool, Squadron Benchmark:
http://xws-bench.github.io/bench
Do you mind if I insert your guide into my squad builder ? There would be of course a clear notice that this is your work and a reference to this page.
cheers !
EDIT: ok, I integrated it, partially, into Squadron Benchmark, latest version. I only integrated your advices on pilots (unique) and upgrades. Squad list examples, advised upgrades for a given pilot are not (yet) integrated. Feel free to comment. Anyway, your guide is really great, waiting for the next version !

Awesome guide! Will there another update soon with the new ships, like Upsilon Shuttle and Quadjumper?
Thanks a lot for the guide! I only started playing a few weeks ago but am hooked already and this guide will be really useful.

Wonderful :-)
New update is here! Sorry for the long-ish wait, but work got the best of me. It's here now though!
5/13/17 V4.6 Edit: I added the new wave X ships (Upsilon, Quadjumper, and Rebel TIE Fighter), as well as updating the errata list (both official and suggested). I updated some of the Suggested Squads too, as well as all of the upgrades.

Thanks for the guide. I keep a copy in my bag when I play at a local club and hand it to new comers to the game.

That's really awesome to know that! I am super happy that this guide is being used by others in the community.
Also, I fixed a few typos so I have a slight update that also includes the coordinate action in the overview.

Love this guide, my son and I refer to it all the time!
It'd be super cool if you would consider allowing community members to contribute to maintaining and improving this guide - it is hosted somewhere you can accept suggested additions and improvements, like on Google Docs or Github?
That's something I can consider. I'm in a bit of a quandary with the guide, currently, so I'm not sure exactly how to proceed. I need to figure out this current issue before I consider a proposal such as yours.
Preamble: I made the guide to make casual games with my friends more accessible. Our group is competive, but we play casually (if that makes sense). So on that end, we are obsessed with balance for our games, and unfortunately, the game is not balanced at all, at higher levels. Costing of crtain ships and upgrades causes many ships to be effectively worthless or very overpowered.
This is nothing new for competive players. However, my issue is that since I was trying to make the guide for competitive players AND my play group (who uses all of the "Suggested Erratas"), the guide was lacking what it could be for both parties. For competitive gamers, some of my suggested upgrades and lists aren't competively viable. On the other hand, because I buff and nerf pilots and upgrades, my explanations of those cards were not accurate for my playgroup.
Because I made the guide for my playgroup, I have decided to switch the focus of the guide's text, suggested upgrades, squads, etc. to fully encorporate all of the "Suggested Errata." While this may be beneficial for some people (like my play group), it will most likely prove to worsen the guide for most of the people using it.
Once I'm finished with my next update, I think it may be appropriate for someone else (or group of people) to take over the "competive" guide. What are peoples thoughts on this?
Interesting situation!
I can completely understand that you made this for your group - and that the needs of your group, and the needs of beginning and competitive players in general, are diverging.
I come from the open source software industry, and I think you could consider applying some of the same ideals to your project.
First, how do you feel about the "ownership" of what exists so far in your guide? There is a whole spectrum from "normal" copyright, to very open Creative Commons licensing options https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/ where others can do pretty much whatever they like with your work. I think your first step needs to be to decide how much you want to "own" the guide going forward. For example, would it be OK for others to copy and improve your book? Would it be OK for them to use your book for commercial purposes, or do you want to allow sharing but disallow commercial use?
Personally, I'd love to see you pick a very permissive "license" - I think it makes contributions and interesting new uses the most likely! There are some improvements my son and I would like to make, if your sharing arrangement permitted it:
- Linking everything to everything - every time a given card is mentioned, I'd love it to be a link I can click/touch to look up the details of the card or rule that is mentioned.
- Addition of the Wave 12 ships and cards
- More "categorization" - for example, I'd love to see a list of jousting Rebel ships, or a list of upgrade cards and pilots that work well with stress
Second, once you decide how others may build on what you've started, then you need some way of actually sharing your work. In the world of software, this almost always happens via Github (here are many examples https://github.com/explore - I work for this company https://github.com/mashape and we share lots of our software with the open source community). I've been thinking about and exploring how you might best share your content, and while Github isn't built specifically for sharing written work, it can be made to work well, and I'd probably suggest using Github (here are some Google search results on this topic github for collaborative writing ).
By sharing on Github, you'd enable things like:
- You could "fork" the book, then start making the fork better for your group, without concern for the folks that _aren't_ in your group (because they'd have the pre-fork book too!)
- Others could fork the book to make their own variants
- Contributors could make "pull requests" to submit improvements to the book
I'm not sure that Github is the perfect solution here, and really, I'm not even sure that facilitating contributions to the book is something you are interested in, so please take all I write here as just ideas to consider!
Let me know if I can help with anything - Thanks, Cooper
I love the guide, and have given a copy to the few people I have introduced to the game. If you could keep a clean version, with no recommended changes, it would be incredible. Just delete them and print... (if it´ s that easy...)
11/11/17 V5.0 Edit: I added the new wave XI ships and the Guns for Hire expansion. This is a pretty substantial update, as I have shifted the guide to be completed geared towards casual play and fully incorporating my suggested casual errata in every facet of the guide. I understand that this makes the guide much less useful for some, but as the guide was originally designed for my play group, our group takes priority.
