Hobbie Klivian/targeting astromech,new kings of the K-turn?

By petercooman123, in X-Wing

Don't know if this has been mentioned in another thread (couldn't find it in the first 5 pages anyway), but with the new targeting astromech, Hobbie kan do k-turns without keeping his stress as long as he can target lock something.

You make a red k -turn, astromech kicks in:

"after you execute a red maneuver, you may acquire a target lock"

When you get the target lock, hobbie's ability kicks in:

"When you acquire or spend a target lock, you may remove 1 stress token from your ship"

Pretty nifty!

Mentioned wherever there was a targeting astro thread :P

It's a solid(?) gimmick, but full mods off of only red manuever for 27 points is incredibly meh

It will be the king of the k-turn.... Until the X7 Defenders come out with their free evade while doing a white k-turn.

That's going to come down to timing.

And I think you'll find that you gain the Target Lock before the Check Stress step. In which case it's not gonna happen.

yeah, it came up. and yeah, it's pretty powerful!

but: new king?

the defender, especially now with title(s), politely says:

"well kid, as long as you behave you might play with - but the moment you get rude, your nose takes a dive in the sand" :D

That's true, didn't think about that, but if he uses his target lock in the combat phase he loses it.

Yeah. So while not really King, he's certainly Queen of the K-turn.

I'm still calling the buff on Y-Wings with TLTs.

Under the old rules you would have been correct (though Hobbie can shed stress by spend a TL as well). Under the current rules "Check Stress" is no longer a separate step. It is now part of executing a maneuver.

Targeting Astromech doesn't trigger until after you execute a maneuver and checking stress is now part of executing a maneuver.

Targeting Astromech:

"After you execute a red maneuver, you may acquire a target lock."

Rules Reference. pg 4:

"2. Execute Maneuver: Resolve the following substeps in order:

a. Move Ship: Slide the maneuver template between the front guides of the ship’s base so that it is flush against the base. Then pick up the ship and place it at the opposite end of the template, sliding the rear guides of the base into the opposite end of the template.
b. Check Pilot Stress: If the maneuver is red, assign one stress token to the ship; if the maneuver is green, remove one stress token from the ship.
c. Clean Up: Return the maneuver template to the pile of maneuver templates. Place the revealed dial outside the play area next to the ship’s Ship card."

I stand corrected. Hobbie is K-turn Kingly.

And furthermore he can still focus as he's no longer stressed from the k-turn.

Thanks! Still don't have the new core, so couldn't check!

And if he picks up stress before he gets to shoot, he can spend to take it away again! Highly situational, but usefull against rebel captive.

The rules reference is free to download as a PDF on the official x wing page.

thanks!

Bren is comparable though with a potential White 5-k. He's not picking up a target lock from it though.

I've used hobbie with this kit its pretty decent. PtL might just be better though idk.

As for king of the K, while I love defenders I think that title should go to porky simply for cool factor. Expert handling, experimental interface + r5d8. pork's a hot mess but with that kit the fat guy becomes Poorkir fel.

I like it for the sheer fact that stressing Hobbie for his ENEMIES is considered non-ideal with the new astromech. For example, if he's attacked by a flechette weapon or targeted by Stressbot or Tactician he gets a Target Lock. While this may not be super threatening it makes him seen as someone to reconsider shooting at with such weapons, and we all know how predictable the poor T-65 is. Would I consider it ideal? Maybe not, but it makes him at least somewhat more interesting as a piece on the board. It also makes him a somewhat more viable torpedo platform when placed in this situation!
Actually, is there a way for you to stress your allies yet? Not a self-stress, but something that will place stress on a friendly. This could work really well between Rebels if there is.

red maneuvers only; not stress

if you get hit by any of that, no K-turns because you can't red when stresed

thing with Bren is he can go infinite crackshot instead of reducing himself to a gimmick

It's the best use, for sure, but mobility abilities are waaaay more fun.

getting green dice out of the way is way more fun*

I usually agree with that sentiment, but Bren doesn't really have enough extra mobility when using Adrenaline Rush to really become all that fun to fly. I'll stick with Pyscho Tycho for suboptimal builds that are excessively entertaining.

I'd love to see a shootout between "Hobbie" and an X7 Defender, K-turning endlessly. The cheapest Imperial comes in at 28 points, while the Rebel and his Targeting Astromech (and Integrated Astro) come to 27. "Hobbie" has the first shot and TL/F every turn while the Defender gets F/E.

Hobbie can't bring PTL because he doesn't have elite talent. But it looks an awesome config.

If it's just a straight up joust the Defender should probably win that match up at least 75% of the time. The green dice with an evade and a focus don't guarantee three evade results but it's highly likely. Three unmodified reds will be putting out steady damage against two unmodified greens.
