What are the unorthodox/underrated ships?

I've been having success with Defenders lately despite all of those games taking place before Imperial Veterans was revealed. They do need a buff but people tend to think "they're overcosted" and then forget that 3/3/3/3 is a very strong statline and Vessery is a nightmare with any support.

The TIE/FO is better than it generally gets credit for. At worst you can use leftover points to upgrade basic TIE fighters to have shields and better dials, but some of those pilots are scary as hell. TIE/FOs are like a strange middle point between TIEs and Interceptors, but people tend to look at how they're worse at swarming or arc dodging and forget that they're more maneuverable than TIEs and cheaper than Interceptors.

T-70s seem very good, although I haven't really expanded past Poe yet. I've heard good things about Red Ace with R2-D2 and Comm Relay, and I'm considering ways to use Ello. Blue Ace has done reasonably well with BB-8.

Starvipers fly like an Interceptor and a B-Wing had a drunken affair, and I mean that as praise. They aren't as consistently tough as B-Wings because dice are less reliable than raw health, but they can avoid jousting a lot more easily when it suits them because Mom was an Interceptor. The Virago title also means that they can have a somewhat Interceptor-like dial with Advanced Sensors and Inertial Dampeners, which gives you a lot of power to respond to unexpected moves by your opponent if you have higher pilot skill. Xizor can hit 9 with VI, after all.

One of my favorite off-kilter builds?

33 points: Outer Rim Smuggler + Navigator + Intel Agent + Anti-Pursuit Lasers.

Throw 3 of 'em in a list for a great "Stop Hitting Yourself" effect :)

I second the FO.

3x Crackshot Black Squadron, 3x Crackshot Omega Squadron. 99 points. 6x Crack Squadron is 90 points so you have 10 points to play around with for upgrades to FO's and named TIEs or TIE FO's. The extra health helps a ton, almost every game I have one FO last a few extra turns on 1 health.

It's ******* nuts. My opponent was flying 3 AC Tempests with a Ace Loadout Vader. I jousted her 3 AC Tempests and killed 2 in the opening engagement before they could fire. Then I hard 1 turned towards Vader and one volleyed him. Then it was 1 AC Tempest vs. all 6 of my ships.

Big Vrill fan here as well.

I barely ever see anyone else using him, but Commander Alozen is basically my go-to Advanced pilot. At 27 points with Crack Shot and Advanced Targeting Computer, he's both more reliable and cheaper than Stele and Eclipse. Sure, he doesn't get to pick a crit or change his speed, but his ability is useful more often than you'd think, and the points saved lets you upgrade that Academy Pilot to Dark Curse. Honestly I find it a little strange that a pilot so similar to the popular Guri (same PS, very similar ability) is so overlooked.

Well, that's the thing- Guri isn't actually that popular.

I think if you're looking for underrated stuff, I'd almost consider Falcons, possibly not-actionless builds the way Fat Han works. You can quite easily put together a Chewbacca build that gets two evade tokens a turn if it does greens, for example.

Any of the named Scum hawks. Mux will change the dynamics of your opponents attack. Palob with a blaster turret and opportunist is a nasty 4-dice turret. No one escorts ships off the board better than Dace with an ion turret and tactician, plus you are going to do two damage with every hit. Use him as a flanker with some other shiny object for your opponent to chase. Once he gets behind a non-turret, it is over.

I really like Guri with VI.

Razzi with weapons engineer and a K4 droid. Expensive, but use it as a support ship and two hard hitters like Guri and Talonbane or Palob...just nasty.

I like flying tie bomber swarms...I think they are highly under rated when you get the missile mix correct.
