The Sims (slightly off topic but it involves spaceships)

By demon3o5z, in X-Wing

Saw Episode 7 last night. Super awesome. (don't worry no spoilers here) I was left with a deep throbbing need to play a Star Wars flight sim. (I've got Tie Fighter on my computer but it's been a jerk recently)

Anyone else sort of shocked that with the new movie out no one jumped on the "Now is the best time to make a new X-Wing/Tie Fighter game!!!"? Cus I desperately want to get in the cockpit of a Special Forces Tie and do some dog fighting. Sadly the dog fighting in Battlefront, though fun, is very limited.

Am I alone? I mean, we're all alone in the philosophical sense, but specifically in this context.

I would love it, but Flight Sims are not considered a popular genre anymore (anymore than skill-based arena shooters or turn based tactical games).

Fighter Squadron mode on Battlefront is just straight-up inadequate.

I was a huge fan of X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, would LOVE a graphically updated version, particularly one with the depth of the full TIE Fighter campaign but as the poster above me stated, they have fallen out of favor.

Played Freespace 2 a while back, LOVED that game with the new skin.

I've heard the same. On the other hand, you'd think with the heaps of money Star Citizen in raking in with a game that's not even finished, Disney, the greedy mouse that it is, would jump right on that upon getting Star Wars.

Considering I have never played any of those games. (im only 16!) I still really want a good flight sim for Star Wars.

You can get the whole x-wing/tie fighter series for cheap on GOG.com. If you have a joystick, they're worth playing.

Agreed, they just look so wonky. An updated engine would make them so delightful (see my previous comments about FS2).

You don't even need a joystick for the oldest version.

Graphics Arnt everything gameplay is far more important as can be seen with the new battlefront it looks great but there just isn't any depth there.

For a few quid on gog you get a far superior product for a fraction of the cost.

Not arguing about playability but playing in small, blocky resolution with crappy graphics does reduce the enjoyment for me (kind of like playing an arcade game)

Seriously:

X-Wing

TIE Fighter

X-Wing vs TIE Fighter

X-Wing Alliance

Hell, I would even take something arcadey like a new rogue squadron game....

If a bunch of jerks hadn't complained about Attack Squadrons not being a new X-Wing game, we'd be flying the T-70 and TIE/FO right now.

BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

I'm old I grew up with blocky graphics and when I wore a lad we didn't have regenerative health we searched for health packs.

Tie fighter is a classic game still fondly remembered 20 years on how many modern games with flashy graphics will stand the test of time.

If graphics were all that mattered minecraft would never have been such a hit.

Don't deny yourself great games just because they are old.

on the contrary:

blocky graphics give me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, and I -deliberately- go and play old arcade classics on real, old arcade machines every few weeks. play your high-def games all you like, it can't beat a classic to/for(?) me ;)

that said, I wouldn't say no to an updated tie-fighter game (as long as it has a story/offline mode. really not keen on that online-only-just-fight-no-story-crap nowadays).
