Epiphany on why Poe is PS 9 (not a huge one)

By GreatMazinkaiser, in X-Wing

An ace is 5 kills under their belt....and Saber Squadron is all aces with 10 kills or more in their interceptor, to earn the Bloodstripes. And they are PS4....I think your ace idea needs to be amended.

If anything, its more of that they have survived and become an ace times such and such a number, like 20+ kills at level 5-6. But an Ace around PS3-4

Honestly, Poe's scenes are better. And he takes 6 ties in a single run in one long movie shot. 6 ties. In a row. That's ace on screen right there.

Wedge? Flies around the medical frigate. Flies wingman on the DS2.... eh. Wedge did good too.

6? I counted 10 by the end of the panning shot.

Let's not forget the 1 bank in the middle of starkiller base, which the T-70 can't do! Unless he had daredevil...But I am pretty sure he already had veteran instincts enabled and loads of other elite talents on.

Pilot skill isn't pilot "skill" it's a reactionary timing window.

Poe may be under skill at 8. But Rey will probably be more like pilot skill 3

Seriously though, he killed a Death Star while being shot at by his ace pilot sith lord dad the first time he flew in an X-wing, maybe his first time flying in combat, or in space at all.

The Death Star was an inside job ;)

Indeed it was

Poe wasn't super amazing though. He definitely didn't outfly Wedge or Han. PS8 is legendary pilots. PS9 are Gods among men..

What movie did you watch? Because I watched a scene where Poe shot down 11 TIE Figters in under 15 seconds (I counted). I never saw Wedge or even Han pull off something that impressive. He also managed to shoot some individual stormtroopers on the ground in between TIEs.

The only thing I've ever seen that comes anywhere near that level of impressive combat flying in canon media was Vader's smackdown of Phoenix Squadron...

Easier just to get used to the idea that sometimes, game balance trumps keeping with canon. Otherwise, Hera Syndulla would have a PS higher than 7 and ships docked to the Gozanti would be vulnerable to attack.

Everyone poking fun at Wedge and Luke's flying...have you just forgotten that they did that flying 30+ years ago, and special effects have gotten a lot better since then? Heck, if all we're judging pilot skill by is how they clearly and dramatically flew on screen in the original trilogy, how's Han Solo or Vader deserve a 9? Everyone flew pretty stiffly, seldom turned, not much by way of rolls or ace dogfighting techniques.

When your flying is so good that it becomes a minor plot point, I think PS 9 is more than justified.

Between Poe's aerobatic killstreak at Maz's place to his amazing Starkiller coup de grace, there's nothing ever seen in any other canon source that even comes close, including Vader's solo of a Corellian in Rebels.

He should be PS 10 IMHO.
