How come the FO TIEs don't have a gunner slot? Spoilers for Force Awakens

By Ken on Cape, in X-Wing

But no rear firing arc.

Given that, during the battle scene on Maz's planet we quite clearly see a TIE/sf firing out its rear, I think a rear firing arc is more than likely actually.

That or we'll finally get a turret, since, you know, it has a turret.

Except if you try to fire that turret in a 360 degree, you shoot off your wing panels

If you want to fire to the sides all you need to do is a gentle roll. The turret on the tie/sf has a larger firing area than the turret on the ywing, but nobody complains about that one. Seriously, the ywing turret has no depression, it can only shoot at stuff level with or above the craft. The TIE/sf turret has great range above and below the TIE to the front and rear in exchange for slightly limited arcs to the side. I know where I'd rather have the extra coverage.

Dude that's Quidditch. You have to get the Golden Snitch or score five My Little Ponies in a row to win.

Duh.

Oh, and in the Canadian league there is no fair catch rule and you only get three clowns.

That's true of almost all turrets. By the sheer virtue of being stuck to the top/bottom of an aircraft or ship, they can only cover from the horizon to the sheer vertical (i.e. 180 degrees). You can't extend beyond that because of the physical presence of the craft the turret is one. I cannot actually think of a single (real) turret that could cover beyond that sphere, be it on the horizontal or vertical.

I still think the TIE Aggressor looks better and can easily justify a 180 degree rear fire arc. Also giving the "Special" version a crew slot and/or a turret slot would be a mistake.

The Aggressor definitely does not look better than the FO fighters.

It has a turret, but the panels block the turret's line of fire to the sides, making it effectively front and rear arcs.

You know, the blasters on almost every single ship in the game only point straight ahead, yet they can all fire in a 90 degree arc. There is obviously some abstraction in how firing arcs work in the game.

Also, as HolySorcerer pointed out, the game isn't just supposed to represent ships flying around on a 2-dimensional plane.

The TIE/sf could end up with an auxiliary arc, or it could end up with a turret. Either one would be a perfectly fair representation of what we see in the movie.

Guys. Guys. Guys. The TIE is NOT shooting SIDEWAYS with it's turret, it's shooting at ships below it, in a 360 CONE. See my diagram below:

Basically, they needed a Tie two main characters could ride in, so they made The Special Forces Tie.

TlT on a k wing clearly can't cover 360 there's alot of ship blocking los, it gets a turret.

No, but it does look physically different from them.

Whoops, I was misremembering the cross section, sorry. Still, cogwheels. When we get the model (and that seems inevitable), they'll be one of the more notable differences.
