Poll - Is one of each expansion enough for causal play?

By Cubanboy, in X-Wing

One of each is more than enough! I mostly own singles of kits and compete in tournaments all the time and have been doing well.

Personally I would actually recommend against getting multiples of any kit due to FFG's habit of releasing alternative paint jobs (e.g. Rebel Aces, Imperial Aces, Imperial Vets).

Of course, if you're looking to run a specific build or using multiples of ships with low cost (e.g. B-wings, TIE Fighters), then you might want to pick up multiple kits.

I don't own the A-wing, Y-wing, Decimator, TIE Bomber, K-wing, Tantive, Rebel Transport, Raider kits.

I have doubles of the Core Set (more TIE fighters!), Slave-1 (my favourite ship), IG-88 (best run in pairs), B-wing (best run in multiples), Phantom (Tactician crew card :(), and Most Wanted kits (more Binayre Pirates!) only.

I have the new Core which gives me one X-Wing and two TIE F/Os. So I'm thinking of two TIE F/O expansion and only one more X-Wing. But 2 of each just seems odd for me and getting out of the habit of not buying 2 or 4 seems strange.

i dont think so. but i also dont think you need one of everything

I personally get two of each, at least, except the epics. I may also only buy 1 T-70 X-wing expansion because I got two TFA box sets. Same for the TIE/fo. I'm really anal about each ship having a copy of the upgrade cards if I can, even though I really only play casual games. I think you could probably get by with enough ships by buying one of each expansion though. At least until you really get into list building, then you may find yourself wanting to double or triple up some ships- particularly Z-95s and TIE Fighters, as previously mentioned.

3 Interceptors is a fun list to run, so if you don't want to proxy Autothrusters, you'd have to buy 2 Starvipers. But you can just proxy Autothrusters.

I'd say "yes, it's very possible". In fact, the only expansions I've bought 2 of are the TIE Advanced and TIE interceptor. Of course, I bought 2 cores, so that brought the TIEs up to a respectable 5, and 3 X-wings, which then form the core of many thematic Rebel and Imperial squadrons.

More than enough you might find.

I'm not ashamed to admit I've used a Firespray model to proxy a shuttle I didn't have. At least, till my wife bought me a shiny new lambda shuttle...

For home fun with friends, proxy could be a base with a firearc and nothin else. Ain't pretty, but we fancy folk don't need for looks, eh?

OP - Yes to your question.

You wont get a competitive list but you can mix it up good with ship builds of different types. Im a collector so 3-8 of each is my stock. Sometimes being limited will allow you to enjoy the game a bit more by using weaker ships by necessity.

There are several ships you benefit from having more than one of like tie fighters and headhunters so while you can play with one of each your also kinda hamstringing yourself.

Been playing for a year and a half now. I play semi-competitively, certainly somewhere above truly casual. I only own one of most expansions. The exceptions are:

Zero of: CR90; Raider; Transport; Bomber; M3-A; YV-666.

Two of: Core Set (Original); Z-95; Aggressor; K-Wing.

Three of: Tie Advanced.

That's it. And I've never felt the need for any more expansions. Even for tournaments. ; )

One of each for the large ships, pick and choose from the small bases. I can imagine more than one of the Interceptor for instance, but only one Phantom.

You can win the world championship without buying multiples of anything.

You didn't catch this year's worlds squad list I'm guessing.

Besides getting one of each expansion will get you more than what most people need even competitivly. Notable ships you will have multiple copies are:

5 TIE Fighters (3 now, 2 more soon)

2 TIE Advanceds

3 TIE Interceptors

2 TIE Bombers (soon)

2 TIE Defenders (soon)

3 TIE/FO Fighters

2 A-Wings

2 B-Wings

3 X-Wings

2 T-70 X-Wings

2 Y-Wings

3 Z-95 Headhunters

In fact, there are only a few upgrade cards which you may find yourself short of for squad building. Here's the list:

2 Twin Laser Turret (Exclusive in K-Wing)

1 Blaster Turret (Exclusive in HWK-290)

2 "Mangler" Cannon (Exclusive in M3-A Scyk & IG-2000)

1 Flechette Cannon (Exclusive in M3-A Scyk)

2 Autothruster (Exclusive in StarViper)

1 Intimidation (Exclusive in VT-49 Decimator)

1 Tactician (Exclusive in TIE Phantom)

1 Fleet Officer (Exclusive in VT-49 Decimator)

1 Flight Instructor (Exclusive in Lamda-class Shuttle)

1 Navigator (Exclusive in Lamda-class Shuttle)

1 Saboteur (Exclusive in HWK-290)

1 Bombadier (Exclusive in K-Wing)

1 R2 Astromech (Exclusive in Y-Wing)

1 R5 Astromech (Exclusive in X-Wing)

1 R7 Astromech (Exclusive in E-Wing)

1 Integrated Astromech (Exclusive in T-70 X-Wing)

3 Crackshot (2 now 3 soon) (Exclusive in Hound's Tooth & Kihraxz)

3 Predator (2 now 3 soon) (Exclusive in TIE Defender & Kihraxz)

1 Decoy (Exclusive in Z-95 Headhunter)

1 Wingman (Exclusive in Z-95 Headhunter)

1 Draw Their Fire (Exclusive in Millenium Falcon)

1 Daredevil (Exclusive in TIE Interceptor)

1 Adrenaline Rush (Exclusive in TIE Bomber)

1 Calculation (Exclusive in StarViper)

1 Lightning Reflexes (Exclusive in Kihraxz)

1 Cool Hand (Exclusive in T-70 X-Wing)

1 Juke (Exclusive in TIE/FO Fighter)

1 Sensor Jammer (Exclusive in Lamda-class Shuttle)

1 Comm Relay (Exclusive in TIE/FO Fighter)

There is only 1 expansion that screams "Buy more than one of me!" and that is IG-2000 due to the pilot ability - unless you want to experiment with swarms specifically - there isn't that much reason to buy more than 1 or each expansion.

As someone who played a lot of Vassal before buying anything, I'm going to state an unpopular opinion here.

You don't need most of the stuff if you don't care about collecting, and/or if you only limit yourself to the faction you really want. The first ships I got after my initial purchase were Miranda and Corran Horn. As long as you can get vital cards like R2D2, PTL or Tactician second-hand, there is no reason to buy everything. For someone looking for a budget build, three K-Wings or two K-Wings and Poe are a great start. The x wing list juggler and especially the worlds results are great guidelines on what expansions should be bought first and what cards are worth getting second-hand.

I also have zero intention of either owning or playing epic. I'd rather pay five bucks for a piece of cardboard with a drawing of a robot, then waste shelf space and money on a ship I am only going to use once.

So yeah, one or zero of each should be more than enough. The second T-70, K and Y are worth getting, at least as far as Rebels are concerned.

[edit] I just want to add that I in no way support colonel general weenie arms and all the unneeded drama that person created just in order to see how long does it take to get banned.

Thats an ok way to go too. I used to play M:tG - there were players who would buy a box with each expansion, there were players who would collect full play sets, there were players who would only buy the singles they were after, there were players who would only draft - its a hobby - buy what ever makes you happy.

Yes! If you have one of everything you have a lot of list building options to try new things and find out what you find the most fun to fly.

Well thought out thanks.

I have always collected enough so I can play anything I want and my friends can come over and make a anything list out of my ships as well. Of course I have spent like $3500 so far.

I always thought 1 of each would work though obviously you cant do a ful swarm with 3 ties.
