Is it fun and possible to only have 1 of each exp and enjoy Star Wars X-wing? (No tournaments)
Poll - Is one of each expansion enough for causal play?
Absolutely!
Not only is it enough, it's more than enough! Casual play can be even less than one of each expansion, much less. Buy the ships you like, play casually and don't worry if each ship is maxed with the best cards from expansions you don't want. Play with what you like and have, and just have fun.
Edited by DHKnechtOr four of one expansion and none of the others, for that matter. Fly what you want, how you want. It's entirely up to you.
I don't often play thematically but if I were to do so I'd want more than one of certain expansions.
...except Tie Fighters! You need a couple of those, at least. Too iconic.
I'd actually love to just buy a few more T-70s and call it a day, honestly. I'm in love with that ship and would be fine with them alone! The wonderful thing about X-Wing is that I feel the same way about a LOT of the other ships, too. So it's a win-win.

Core set and exp give you 3 (tech 6 if your doing the new core and exp)
One of each is certainly sufficient for non-competitive play.
One of each is more than enough. I'd say you can quite easily skip some expansions if you want. Myself I've skipped most of the S&V stuff, because I got enough and mostly play Rebels.
I'll most likely be skipping Imperial Veterans because while it's a great pack for Defenders and Bombers, again I mostly play rebels... $30 to make a ship I seldom if ever play better... is better spent on Armada or Imp Assault.
But I agree, you really need at least 4 Tie Fighters.

One of each expansion is 5 TIEs ![]()
2 from core set, 1 from the expansion and 2 from the carrier
Edited by HanthemanI have been out of the X-wing game (wave 4 is last really big time play) for a bit seeing I switched to armada and I was thinking about jumping back into X-wing and wanted some input.
I am going to most likely skip epics for now.
Thanks all still like more input .
Edited by CubanboyWith the introduction of Imperial Aces and FFG's model for revisiting ships, one of each pack definitely seems like a good way to go. ESPECIALLY because of the cool scenarios they include in those packs. The escape pod mission from Rebel Aces looks amazing, but I just haven't made time to play it because I'm wrapped up in the tournament mode. It's the scenario I'm most looking forward to trying out (man, why haven't I played it yet?!)
The thing about casual play is that you need ships for your opponent, too. So while going wild with 8 TIE interceptors may be a blast for you, your opponent (family, friend, acquaintance) will need to use some of your ships. Wait, are we talking about casual play at home or at the game store? Do your casual friends come over and play, too?
Of course one of each is enough! If you don't have one of everything, how will you know what you need MORE than one of?
I myself have one of every expansion from ships that appear in the original trilogy. (and a HWK too)
Only thing i have double are the core set (found it on discount), a y wing and a tie bomber. Only because the Y wing is my favourite ship, and i wanted two bombers to assault the rebel transport!
I have plenty of fun with them. Not all my lists are optimal, but that's fine when you are playing with friends. We are leaning more and more to just using the generic pilots with minimal upgrades, or fixed upgrades for our games anyway. (Fixed upgrades are what we assign to a ship as standard upgrades. For example we give each x wing a standard R2 astromech and proton torpedoes.)
It is more than enough, way more. You can have fun with one of each from wave 1 already!
For a truly casual player I would recommend the Rebel Transport at some point, since the campaign is awesome and inexpensive to play while also using the standart field. That really amps up the enjoyment you can have, but it is of course by no means neccessary.
Is it fun and possible to only have 1 of each exp and enjoy Star Wars X-wing? (No tournaments)
Absolutely. You miss out slightly on big swarm lists (only 2 A Wings, only 3 Zs, only 5 TIEs) but it gets you more than enough to have casual themey fun games. And TBH, if you did want to get into tournaments, gets you more than enough to run a number of strong, competitive tournament lists, too.
Mostly likely YES
except for TIE Fighters and one Rebel fighter of your choice. Probably X-Wings or B-Wings. Otherwise one is okay.
Even better if you mean one of every expansion because that give you two of some ships like the A-Wing, B-Wing, Defender (soon) and Bomber (soon) plus cool new cards.
I bought 2-4 of everything to have squads for Epic now I have extra ships that collect dust for me. You should see my dust collection, quite nice actually.
All kidding aside one of everything should be great but, as above, I would want a couple extra of whatever you want as your main line fighters.
Game On ![]()
I'm a strong advocate of buying what you want to fly and being as selective as possible. I'm primarily an Empire/Scum player, so the only Rebel expansions I have are either ships that also have Scum versions (Z, Y, HWK) or ships that came with Twin Laser Turrets.
But I don't own all the Imperial expansions, either. I don't have a Decimator, and if Fleet Officer ever gets reprinted I may never get one.
It's even enough for competitive play. I don't even have a copy of every ship and I consider myself a competitive player. In fact, that's part of the joy I get out of the game. I love having a restriction on my squad building. It forces me to think outside the box and build things I wouldn't otherwise.
but.... I must fill the battlefoam! There are still empty slots that only fit certain sized ships...
No, that is not my primary motivation. However, I do have an affinity for the Epic style of game and I do not see me limiting ships. In fact, I still need 3 more old school TIEs that I haven't gotten around to buying. Two more A-Wings. All of the Starvipers... meaning at least 3, maybe 4... and I don't have any foam for them, but I'm not sure I'm flying them any time soon... certainly not more than one... well, ok, never say never, cause Episcum! Still need at least 6 more Z-95s, but then I will have to decide if I want a group that is all Black Sun variety or not... I will say, I'm pretty good on old style X-Wings. I don't think I need another Falcon. I'm not sure that I would ever need another Tantive IV. Most everything else, I could always use one to three more.
Be careful going down this road. I started that way too and after achieving that goal I decided oh I need more ties and z95's, then my Bwings and Awings looked lonely because hell they both come in aces and so on and so forth. I now have 2 hardware organizers full of plastic. I plan on making an epic man cave some day with all these things dangling from fish line under a glow in the dark star studded ceiling.
Yes. I feel even competitively. Long ago i said i would only buy one of each, and while i would have loved more of certain ships, I'm glad i didnt, as that is when the first Aces pack came out. FFG seems to like reissuing ships, either in aces or with other ships such as the gozanti.
One of each will give you plenty variation now that there are multiple sources of ships.
Yes. As many others have said it is actually more than you would need to have a good time for a long time. You can even run some fairly competitive lists for tournaments with just one of each.
The only expansion I have gotten 2 of is the Tie figther, besides that, Ive only got 1 of each, and Think that's enough for competitive too.
