The Force Awakens Unofficial Poll thread. Maybe spoliers.

By JJFDVORAK, in X-Wing

We have a character that is a reskinned Vader for the most part.

Hmmm? Kylo Ren was very little like Darth Vader, despite his best efforts. This seemed obvious from the moment he removed his mask.

I can't hate what I don't GAF about. The movie was embarrassing to watch. If I had actually paid for the ticket (saw it as a company event) I would have asked for my money back...from Disney.

It was an overhyped movie for little kids...really, really little kids. It was dull, samey, predictably laughable. I face palmed far too often. I'm not gonna say it was Episode I, but 0.5 away from it for sure. Thanks Disney and JJ, I'm totally de-invested. Do whatever the hell you want to the franchise. It's not my bag anymore.

Holy frack dude. Star Wars is for kids! Just we used to be those kids!!

I swear some of you so called fans would be happy if no movie or anything had been made after 1983!

Get over yourself.

3.5. Good, not great. Thought the first half of the movie was better than the second.

My thoughts exactly. A review I read said it was more of a re-release of Episode 4 than an Episode 7.

4 First half better than second.

Going back and forth between two and three.

I recorded your vote as a 2.5. If you see it again or think about it more and want to vote again, please do. That goes for all of you of course!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That is the whole point of this thread. I didn't love it either, but I didn't hate it like Radzap apparently did. Also Radzap, give it a second chance. I liked it more upon a second viewing.

Also just so everyone knows, the Xwing community rates Star Wars The Force Awakens, as a 3.93 out of 5 with 83 votes so far. I have been updating the OP with the tally so far so check there for updated results.

I will agree there were some differences between Vader and Ren, and I liked the fact that ren took his mask off. Does every character that is a sith need to wear a helmet? He was more conflicted than Vader, But there were otherwise an awful lot of similarities in appearance, in action, etc.

I would have rather seen a character like Dooku. Smooth, evil, refined, no mask.

Still, I liked Ren, I particularly like the interrogations where he saw inside the minds of his prisoners.

Completely, unabashedly, unashamedly 5!

The first part of the movie had me giddy with, "I'm watching Star Wars in the theater again!"

About halfway through the movie I took a second to reflect and realized that the movie was basically perfect. I don't mean perfect as in unable to be improved upon, but I mean that I had seen nothing that made me feel disappointed. There are all these inconsistencies that people like to point out, but we've seen that all before. How about, "Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise," way back in 1977. Now it's a gag, but that's seriously a huge problem with the first film. You don't even fear the stormtroopers. But I've seen that kind of stuff in all parts of Star Wars and frankly, it doesn't bother anymore. Why didn't the Star Destroyer intercept the Falcon when it was above Jakku?* I don't know, but who cares?! It was an engaging movie and I didn't feel let down by it at all.

Also, let me add that I'm a huge prequel fan, but it took me several viewings to warm up to Episode I. This time, with The Force Awakens, I didn't have to search for connections to make it feel like Star Wars. It was easy to sit back and just enjoy it for what it was. I wholeheartedly welcome it to my collection of the 6 Star Wars films.

*This was pointed out to me by my wife after the movie.

This guy gets it. Many of the mistakes in the OT were later explained away in the EU, but they were still mistakes. Most of them we came to embrace. The cornier bits of the classics are very popular in their own way and it's kind of unfair to demand that this movie somehow capture the feel of the OT without a bit of silliness. In particular I'm somewhat expecting "But no damage!" to become a thing, probably because that was the only time the movie made me laugh without trying to.

In all fairness to the 1977 Stormtroopers, they were shooting well while boarding the Tantive IV and were fearless every time we saw them. They weren't supposed to kill any of the heroes because Vader had plans that required them to escape. But it does severely hurt their image either way, I'll give you that.

I'm the opposite when it comes to the prequels. I still enjoy them, but since I was like eight when Phantom Menace came out and the prequels were all done before I ever tried applying critical thought to a movie I actually began to notice flaws on followup viewings where before I hadn't seen them. I do think the hate directed at the CGI is completely excessive. It was pretty obvious at times but it wasn't as bad as people say it was. In newer movies I tend to just ignore people who complain about CGI effects entirely--watch Fury Road's storm scene and remember that not only is the storm CGI, so is Furiosa's metal arm. Forgot Charlize Theron has both her arms until someone mentioned her name. Anyway, Star Wars.

Also I like the speech before they use the Starkiller. The delivery was appropriately hammy and the whole thing gave off a Nuremberg Rally feel to me. The Empire was based on the Nazis so it was good to see Abrams run with that.

this is fair

when the biggest criticism of a film is "it felt rushed" or, in other words, that one wants to see more of it...yeah, it did its job of being Star Wars pretty **** well :P

I will add that, while the generic troopers feel like complete jobbers apart from that one Brass Balls motherf*cker who takes on Finn with a power mace/tonfa thing, the FO pilots are proper threats

apart from plot armor Poe and some incredibly crazy moves from Rei, those guys are legit threats (helps that only two of them chased the falcon which had to work like crazy to fight them off, as opposed to ANH where it just sort of glided forward and swatted down 5 of them...like it can in this game)

4. I really liked it. I want to see it more times before placing it... but I feel its better than average.

4 for me - good show, had some great moments, a lot of good moments, a few "eh... wtf..." moments, but no "how stupid do I look to you?!?" moments

I loved that to, after that long scence of dogfighting, I was like, "wait, there were only two of them...."

I agree that the whole "I didn't like it because I needed more background" is a weak reason to have issue with the movie, but actual scene pacing is a different story. It felt rushed to me at times, especially during my first watch, but upon seeing it again, it really is only in the first half where the pacing is breakneck. The second half is slower per scene although a ton of stuff happens. I really think the more I see it the more I'll like it. Anyway, what is your score Fickle?

4.5. My only gripe was lack of world building. I know JJ wanted to avoid prequel style politics, but we could've used some more context.

Loved Finn, Poe, BB-8. I really liked Rey too, but the rest were on a different level. I hope Finn has an awakening that might indicate Kylo's attention and his breaking of programming.

I give it a thumb and a torch thumb up.

**** me this forum butchered my double quote

@Orrin

you bet :P

even at the final battle over Starkiller base, we had Poe being Poe but the rest of the T-70 getting swatted down like flies

you know, just like in X-wing miniatures <_<

I don't like scores :(

I don't believe films or games can be rated on some sort of consistent scale because they're made for different reasons and because the medium is wholly subjective

so, my score is "Incredibly likable characters" out of "where the **** is the FO fleet when the base is under attack!?"

Honestly, this makes me question if you've even seen the movie.

Too easy? ... It would be nice if the FO let their starkiller base get destroyed intentionally. Maybe there is more about this

the FO pilots are proper threats

This so much. No well trained pilots randomly crashing in the ssd skeleton that a girl who never flew the falcon before navigated safely.

here's the moment where my heart swelled with pride at the FO fighter:

Pilot #372 is chasing Poe through the Trench on Starkiller Base

Poe goes full 90 degree tilt to fit his T-70 through the tiny gap in the Trench, even locking his S-foils to get as slim as possible

Pilot #372, not being an utter dipsh*t, pulls up instead of trying to fit those massive solar panels through the same gap

110% thought he'd splat himself there

4. It was a lot of fun to watch, I look forward to my 2 year old getting a little older and watching it with him. I kinda want to go watch it again.

Reading this comments makes me loose hope for the star wars community

I can't tell if you're upset because there aren't more 5s or there aren't more 1s.

let's face it, the empire MUST suck. epicly suck.

because otherwise there's no plot.

After seeing it a second time, my score goes up to a 3.5. My wife had to leave halfway through (babysitter issues) so we're gong to have to go back again sometime soon. The fact I'll see it 3 times in 2 weeks either speaks to my love of Star Wars or the underlying strength of the movie.

5, loved it.
