The Force Awakens. Your reaction? (Spoilers)

So to the extent we can say anything is "historically accurate, we can say Finn's inability to massacre a population is.

he's a plumber, not a soldier

But he can fight with a light saber...

It came to my attention that Tie/fo - at least the special version - must have proper life support ... otherwise Poe and Finn would have been killed after leaving the hangar.

Why do the Tie pilots still war the pressure suits?

And ... Ties are pretty darn robust (this one at least) after being merely destroyed by an ordnance hit in space, they managed to more or less land on a planets surface ...

He's a top soldier, marked as a possible ideal stormtrooper.

The janitor line was probably just a throwaway joke.

it means ANYONE with sufficient plot armour can

It's called safety. Why do you think they wear "normal" suits in the vars Gundam franchises in the suits (which have life support) and on the bridges of starships (when they're in battle mode)? If you end up going EVA (and at least the TIE/sf has ejection seats) it's nice to know that you're not immediately going to suffocate/freeze to death in the void.

This^. No one ever nitpicks about Biggs telling Porkins to eject, which wouldn't be a good idea unless those open face pilot suits sealed in a way that is not immediately obvious. Poe and Finn don't punch out of the /sf until well within the atmosphere because they didn't want to suffocate or burn up. The /sf is awesome, I agree with Poe. Mag Pulse warheads please.

As if the Empire does care for the safety of troopers and pilots...

^actually yes the Empire apearantly did care, since their fighter pilots had ejection seats and sealed suits as well as craft that were more nimble and capable in dogfights. It's troopers had armor that protected them from at least some injuries, as well as giving them the equipment to deal with various environments and situations (space duty, garrison duty, cold weather and scouting, ext.).

Except... the empire doesn't seem to believe in handrails on walkways that span bottomless pits. In fact there's way too many bottomless pits in this series. You would think gravity generators would be oriented to slow down anything falling vertically till it came to rest on the side of the 'pit' just in case someone dropped a wrench into a generator or someone fell while doing maintenance on a tractor beam. At least the Emperor's throne room had guard rails... which meant Vader had to pick him up extra high to toss him over the edge. Oh well.

Luke fell down a bottomless pit and survived, Phasma was tossed, apparently, in a trash compactor but will return.

Maybe she carried Han's dying body?

The flightsuit with rebreather was NECESSARY beacuse the empire didn't even bother putting oxygen in it.

Not even speaking about heaters...

The holes of doom are SW reality.

ALL HAIL THE PITS OF DOOM

And TIEs lacking life support has been refuted many times in canon sources.

I dubbed Fin the Pooper Trooper.

I dubbed Fin the Pooper Trooper.

In a certain context, that is vaguely racist.

Humorously and unintentionally so however.

Well, intentional or not, he is one xD

And know what? Thanks to him, the new deathstar was PLUNGERED

It sure would be nice to be a fly on the wall when Abrams and his think tank were coming up with ideas and fleshing out TFA.

I would have like to hear their reasoning of why it is so close to ANH, why Ren is the way he is, etc.

Flin being Mace's grandson is interesting; personally I think the entire Flin force sensitivity thing was a intentional red herring to throw off anyone looking at trailers and what not. But it would be interesting if h simply hadn't twinged because he had no real affinity for the skywalker bloodline.

That being said, I kind of prefer him to be a nobody that became somebody. An ordinary man that bucked the trend.

Watched film yesterday - took the 6 year old and her best friend. It was good - as in great cgi, flight scenes et al.

I was hoping for it to be awesome, but sadly the whole episode 4 repeat feeling, some pretty lame acting in parts, and a lack of back story to some of the characters was a bit unfortunate.

I found Harrison Ford particularly old and doddery, and just not convincing - and Han used to be my favourite character.

Still - it is a welcome return for the glory that is Star Wars, and brilliant just for that! So...

EXCITEMENT!!

Mace Windu is Finn's grandfather.

Speculation? It would seem unlikely, given that Mace was pretty strict in the Jedi order, that he would've slipped and slipped his lightsaber where it shouldn't belong. :P.

He's a Jedi who has been known to have tasted a lot of the Dark Side if you know what I mean.

I really liked Kylo Ren. He isn't very intimidating with his mask off, but that's something I have liked before. Palpatine may have looked as evil as he was, but a lot of truly horrible people are perfectly normal in looks. It also fits if they decide to have him join the Light Side later on, although I'd love to see a good guy that looks like evil incarnate. Seriously, imagine Palpatine hamming it up like he always does while telling a charity that he just bought them a building they can use as an office or something. Kylo Ren actually looking like just another guy under his helmet also fits with his internal struggle--he's not cartoonishly evil like Palpatine or larger than life like psychic mass murdering cyborg Vader, he's a guy who took a step towards evil and then decided to keep going.

I like the twist of Kylo Ren being a villain that feels a pull towards being a good guy. It's an interesting inversion of prequel Anakin. Some people didn't like his tantrums but I have to disagree. The Dark Side has always been about channeling your anger and hatred. Vader may have been a lot quieter and calmer about it but he still had a habit of casual murdering people that annoyed him, and Palpatine shows a pretty big sadistic streak whenever he gets the chance. Kylo is younger than both and more conflicted about the path he's taken, so for him to lose control of his temper makes sense. I also like how he's actually more practical in some ways than our Imperial Sith were. Note that he never teamkills despite suffering setbacks caused by other people. Unlike Vader he's apparently willing to let people learn from their mistakes, which is a better long term strategy and encourages people to admit their mistakes so that plans can be adjusted.

Wasn't expecting Poe to be such a nice guy, but I like it. From the trailer I thought he was going to have a hostile attitude towards Finn, maybe suspect him of actually being a spy. Since Finn and Rey both had difficulty stepping into their hero roles it was good to see one that had already managed it.

Humour was done much more gracefully than in the prequels. I mostly enjoyed the prequels despite their flaws but I do find that they have a terrible habit of making comic relief characters that are too important to the plot or fail to actually be funny (Jar Jar is of course both). A few times the prequels also seem to basically grind to a halt so the comic relief can step out and see if George Lucas can be funny (sometimes but usually not). This one was much better about using quick jokes that don't distract from the plot (BB-8's "thumbs up" with the lighter) or just being really funny (the nurse that kept telling Chewie how brave he was).

Poe is also very much Wedge Antilles for a new generation, so that's good. Wedge has a cooler name but that won't stop me from looking forward to watching Black Leader tearing through TIE/FOs in the next movie.

I think Kylo Ren is a great villian - I hate his guts already. He's got enough power to be dangerous, and enough servility to be wretched.

I really liked Kylo Ren. He isn't very intimidating with his mask off, but that's something I have liked before.

I'm not too sure about his hair though. The long hair in combination with the cape made him look like a young Snape a bit.

There is menace there though, and mostly unhindered by control. As Lecter said in Silence of the Lambs: He thinks he is, he tries to be.

This is not the cold cruelty of a Commodus in Gladiator, or the detached calculating evil of Tarkin. But it also isn't the deranged pleasure of a Joffrey or Ramsay.

This is the fury of someone who wants to be evil, to emulate his grandfather, but fails. And hates himself for failing.

Isn't part of the Kylo Ren character, personality, taken from the boy who stole the Suncrusher? Now that I think of it.

Kyp_Durron_Infobox.jpg

Kylo Ren Kyp Durron, fallen to the dark side, killer of untold many, redeemed and rejoined in the light.

Oh, and also freezer of lightsaber blades, now that I'm refreshing my memory on Wookieepedia.

Edited by Dagonet

How did Kylo Ren get his ass handed to him though? By someone who was unaware they even had the force a few hours earlier.

I guess Luke skipped lightsaber training.

Kilo Ren looks more likely to be a member if ISIS then the son of Han and Leia.

The guy has giant ears hidden by his black hair with a long crooked nose. Not trying to insult the guy just point out he looks nothing like them. Great voice for the part though. They should have just kept the mask on...the one that serves no purpose.
