Soontir Crakshot

By Sir Orrin, in X-Wing

Hey guys!

I really want to try the Crackshot thing with Ties, but I only have 4 Ties.

I also LOVE Soontir, especially after I tryed the Autothrusters+Stealth Device combo.

So, I came up with this:

Soontir

Autothrusters

Stealth Device or Targeting Computer

Black Squadron x 3

Crackshot

Howlrunner

Push the Limit or Crackshot

so, If I give Howlrunner Push the Limit, Which I usually do to keep her alive, I am one point over.

So, either I give howlrunner Crackshot, or I replace Stealth Device with a Targeting computer, but I think The stealth Device is a much better option. thoughts?

Our store consistenly loves TC over SD on Soontir... but you have to fly it a little different (more arc dodging, less jousting) I've seen howlrunner crackshot with only 2 BSP's, those work pretty dang good too!

If you TC Soontir, make sure he's an ultimate flanker, keep him around for the endgame where he'll be almost impossible to take down. You will also need initiative bid, so I'd still go crackshot on howlrunner to be under 100 points.

Soontir wants Stealth Device. It forces you to take the bonus, defensive focus rather than the Target Lock, which is what saves his bacon and makes him one of the hardest ships in the game to kill. Otherwise, you'd just be some guy with 3 green dice, an an evade token but no focus token, when enemies turned to shoot at you. Your durability is cut in half. If you want Soontir to have a "Target Lock", just fly him within R1 of Howlrunner for the Predator type bonus.

Howlrunner flies in a swarm, and thus generally doesn't like PtL. PtL means you need a green maneuver, which makes the entire swarm more predictable. Howlrunner should run Crackshot, or possibly even Determination or Squad Leader.

Hope this helps.

Edit: JonnyD above me is right about the initiative bid. Run SD on Soontir, 3x Blackshots, and Howlrunner with no EPT. Take a 2pt bid. Darth/Soontir/Palp list is 99pts. Make your Soontir out fly theirs.

Soontir with no PTL is a dead Soontir.

EDIT: PTL was implied (as it should be  )

It's true he didn't list PtL, but if you examine his point cost (and the fact that it's Soontir), the PtL is implied.

That large of a point investment needs teeth. Soontir Fel is the ultimate arc dodger, between R3 and arc shenanigans he shouldn't ever be touched. Targeting computer for life.

Lol sorry, I forgot to write it! It is kind of a part of him though.....

I disagree about Stealth Device being the automatic choice. Soontir excels at getting out of arcs, in which case the extra focus is useless, and a TL may be more valuable. I've flown both with TC and with SD and both are viable, they just require different playstyles. I personally find TC more fun to play as it's much more dependent on maneuvering out of arcs and allows you to hammer someone with both a target lock and a focus.

until tlts hit, I flew soonts with a tc, too.

it hits like a wall of bricks and really ups his output.

nowadays, I wouldn't leave home without AT&SD, though. just too many turrets on the table. I really don't see that as a problem, but it sure does affect the way I build and fly my lists.

Yea, I think I am going to put SD on Soontir, and Give Howl Crackshot. Throw a good punch with the Ties, and Keep Soontir Alive for the end game.

I've only flown against TLTs a few times, but my experience is that Soontir can do pretty good against them without SD. On average, you'll roll at least 1 evade and 1 blank (which AT turns to evade) out of the three die, allowing you to have 2 evades which is usually enough against TLTs. For the times when it's not or the green die fail, you can use your multiple tokens to make up the difference. Even if a hit gets in, it's a regular hit and not a crit. In addition, I'd rather have the extra firepower to chew through the massive hull of the TLT ship. I drool at the prospect of sliding in at range 1 behind a Y and using a focus and TL to ensure 4 hits against the puny 1 green die.

It's definitely a lot riskier, but I fly Soontir in the first place because I want a high risk - high reward ship.

What about Juke on Howlrunner? That way she can evade without it hampering her offense by much.

Soontir with no PTL is a dead Soontir.

Daredevil Soontir would like to disagree.
