I am also a fan of Long Range Scanners, however, how much damage the Black One title caused to it since its release? Are people not using the Title? Or T-70s for that matter?
Long Range Scanners: an analysis
As a more casual player, LRS gives you the sphincter tightening detail of target locking ships as your opponent is first deploying his ships in combat, which can be unsettling to the uninitiated. I realize you guys are all experts, so this detail has no effect on your iron-willed surgical precision. But anyway...I'm in no way an expert.
I did watch a match or two that had many scratching their heads at a 3-0 run against some diverse and powerful lists (Palp-Defenders, Miranda Horn, and Triple TLTs):
Scimitar Squadron Pilot (25): Concussion Missiles (4), Proximity Mines (3), Extra Munitions (2), Long-Range Scanners (0) x4
I don't know him; seemed a nice chap. Maybe he practiced a lot and flew Bombers like an ace. Maybe the other blokes were duds (I know this is not true), but he made it look almost easy. TL Missiles at distance, mines in close, boom! I was in awe....
Edited by clanofwolvesI've seen it used on "sniper" bombers - Gamma Squadron Veteran, Crack Shot, Homing Missiles, Long Range Scanners - it's only packing one shot but it's a hell of a shot to try and evade..... a homing missile with crack shot and focus is a bugger to dodge even for a tricked-out interceptor.
Well, I know the term from star fleet battles, where it means one massive volley all at once with the hope of severely crippling the other ship before they do significant damage to you, and then disengaging for a couple turns while you recharge your weapons. As opposed to a steady stream of continuous fire.
It wasn't necessarily the first strike, it was just the biggest and most powerful that could be done.
I loved LRS and i used bombers with it a lot when it came out. But now with HOTR release, Black One is just too common and it completely shuts down LRS without even trying.
Stupid title should have only been the ship its equipped on.
I think you will see less and less of the Black one title as Hot Shot co-pilot becomes a staple. That card kicks Poe in the teeth and tells him to get sit in a corner for the rest of the game. But in the Meta in AZ LRS is not ever seen. The problem with LRS is you can just not bring that ship into the fray. And then your bombers can re acquire because the are too close.
Can I put Long Range Scanners on a U-wing if I put Sabine Wren on as a crew member?
No, the U-wing only has a torp slot and Sabine gives the ship she is on a bomb slot. You need a missile and a torp slot to equip LRS.
Oh... yeah what was I thinking, thanks for pointing that out. Too bad, for a second I'd thought Bodhi Rook's ability could be expanded into something else.

actually i see it on VI Snap more than Poe.

Thank you for sharing LRS bomber game data. It is very rare and it helps me support my current theories on LRS bomber performance. I could definitely crush many pilots with that list. I do wonder what its toughest matchups are.
I prefer Scimitar Pilot, Homing Missiles, Munitions, LRS (23 points)
If bombing, take Deathfire, Concussion Missile, Conner Net, LRS (25 points)
Tomax Bren with crackshot & LRS is good, but that is in a different price range.
-- Scimitar Squadron pilots are slightly better than Gamma Vets (though it would be fine to be proven wrong by regional tournament results)
-- You don't always get the second shot from Extra Munitions, but it keeps the ship a threat after the first pass
-- You can play headgames by switching which ship you have locked if there is a slow opening engagement
-- Reacquiring a target lock takes planning ahead a few moves, but it is merely a gameplay style adjustment
-- Bombers have barrel roll
Problem with Long Range Scanner is that it doesn't fix the problem with [ATTACK:TARGET LOCK] header cards and that is repositioning makes it easy for a higher PS ship with a red TL token to get out of the arc of the blue target lock token. Unless you are Nera you are bound to your primary arc when using missiles or torpedoes. Also now that guidance chip is out it fixes the problem with discarding target lock tokens just to make an attack. To find out the problem with torpedoes and missiles I often compare 2x Proton Torpedoes against HLC (for only two shots). HLC tends to come out on top.
Now LRS does have a place. And that's with homing missiles (not the advanced type). But that's only to chase down speeding x7s.
I like to run a pair of gamma vets with the following:
Homing missile
EM
proton rockets
LRS
Predator
Seismic
Take TL off the bat of course and fire homing missile, possibly preserving your TL. Then you have 4 dice proton rocket attacks for close work, which do not require a TL, so again you have the option to keep it or spend it when it counts. this way you've got good options at all ranges. They usually die with one missile or rocket left, but I usually get off 3 good shots, and the 5K will often let me lock a second time as well. Predator helps make up for the loss of guidance chips and also helps preserve your TL. I usually round out the list with vader or a defender. Also, the bombers are self suffecient, they don't rely on support from another ship to get the job done. Though expensive, they do a lot of damage before they go down.
