IG-88 Help: Offensive or Evassive?

By Caboose2900, in X-Wing Squad Lists

New here. I recently started playing X-Wing about 2 months ago and have been loving every minute of it. Haven't been to any tournaments yet (none in my area yet), but I have a pretty decent play group of around 6 or so. Most of them are interested in epic play though, which makes testing legitimate fleets a pain. Anyways, list.

Ive been flying a pair of IGs from the start pretty much. I toyed around with my own list at first, but then settled on a list I saw in a YouTube video that goes like this:

IG-88b & IG-88c (identical):

IG-2000

Vetran Instincts

Auto Thrusters

Heavy Laser Cannon

Fire Control System

Feedback Array

(100 points total)

After a few games I took off the Feedback Arrays, because they just weren't doing much. I am currently trying out Inertial Dampeners for a two point bid, but haven't needed to use them yet. My current record is 9-0, so I must be doing something right.

My main question is, do you guys think VI is necessary on these ships to get that extra pilot skill, or should I not be worried since they can't get to that magic number 9? If I don't use VI, what should I replace it with? Also, what have you had more success with, the more evasive lists that use Advanced Sensors to maneuver better, or something similar to what I have? I think I would miss FCS too much personally.

Anyways, thanks for any advice you can give me! And of course, fly casual.

I've been enjoying Crackshot, HLC, AT, FCS, Glitterstim. Crackshot and glitterstim make it real nice for taking out Fel/other aces, who can be a pain. I've also one-shot a stressbot before it gets to shoot due to crackshot, which was nice. People say VI is super neccisary for fighting vs Superdash, I've never had an issue keeping him in arc though. Maybe when rebels get Kanan I'll be more worried about VI for them. For now I'm loving crackshot.

Edit: Welcome to the game btw! Hope you get some tournaments in your future, even casual ones are good fun.

That's funny that you say VI is better against Dash, seeing as how 3 of the 5 people in my play group frequent him. It is nice getting to move after him, but like you say, I don't think it would be too hard to keep him in arc regardless.

I tried out Crackshot on my Talonbane last night, and it was devastating. I think I'll load up my IGs with it next time and see how they do.

Thanks for the input!

I vastly favor the more aggressive, attack based Aggressors. I've actually had very good results with Crack/FCS/HLC/AT/Title/Feedback. The Feedback array is what always throws people for a loop, and in 1 tournament claimed the lives of Fel, Whisper, Jake, and Jax. It's hyper aggressive since you are damaging yourself by using it, but I'll always take 1 damage to remove a nasty Ace from the board. It also gives you an answer to out of arc or bumped ships as you can block the Ace and then feedback them.

The only choices when I run brobots is the EPT between Crackshot and VI, and the illicit between Feedback, Dampeners, and Glitterstim.

crackshot glitterstim combo is amazing and a great opener for that first round of combat. you can slug out 4 hits each from your HLC's fairly easily and also have the glitterstim for defense too. VI really depends on who you are facing on a regular basis. if someone in your group is running PS7 dash render then hell yes its worth it to get the reactionary move but on the other hand 4 hits with a crackshot to remove 1 evade can put some serious hurt on anything and the likelihood that you will lose an aggressor first round is low. just choose something that must die and dump your glitterstim first round of combat and blow it to dust. take the reduced damage from glitterstim then press on.

aggressors take a little bit of flying to get good with but that alpha strike will go a ways towards getting you what you need.

I scored top 8 in a regional tournament with PtL, HLC, Autothrusters, FCS and Title on B and C. It is a very balanced list in terms of offense and defense. It can be devastating to the target that for one moment allows them to do their thing. You will essentially sit with Focus, Evade, Boost and a TL every round, though you're locked to straights and banks and it's incredibly unforgiving to being blocked. It's high risk, high yield.

As for handling Dash I've only faced him once with this list, but it wasn't that much of a match. I just herded him around for a bit as he just desperately wanted out of my arcs and eventually I had him flying the direction I wanted and was prepared to get into position to attack when he accidentally flew off the board.

So I just attended a tournament with the list I posted, and ended up taking first. Can find the write up here. https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/196179-store-winter-tournament-dual-ig88/

I really gotta say the crackshot is solid gold. So dang useful, I can't imagine ever not using it on brobots. Try it and you'll be hooked. The Glitterstim was pretty nice. I don't regret it at all, though they weren't as big a factor as I thought they'd be. I think that it was just bad eyeball luck though. Still decent though for sure for 2 points.

Read your post, RsRabin. Congrats on your win! I definitely need to try Crackshot on my bots. So many people are recommending it that I can't ignore it.

I am not a fan of Feedback Array. Try Inertial Dampners on both of them + Seismic Charges. Or you can use Glitterstim on both.
