The Spoilerrific Super Duper Episode Seven Megathread!

The double-saber is fine if you weild it one-handed. The main problem with Maul is that he tries to use it like a staff, which is isn't. It'd be excellent if used in a similar manner to a Madu (an indian double-bladed buckler/sword combo weilded in one hand). It could also use considerable improvement, because it definitely needs a proper handguard. Unfortunately I'm not finding a decent video on silambam techniques with maduvu, or I'd post it for reference :/ ; generally, though, the doublesaber design works when used one-handed and makes for a solid defensive weapon that you can weild offensively rather nicely as well. When you start using two hands you sacrifice all your mobility and stuff gets a tad nonsensical.

Dito on Ren's sword design. With proper use and grip, it's virtually impossible to cut yourself on the crossguard. The offensive capacities of said crossguard are rather nasty as well, much more so than the defensive ones (where the design is noticably lacking). There's a nice video with a somewhat exagerated crossguard design that illustrates how here:

You'll notice that neither Ren nor Maul actually use the weapons 100% realistically, but that's movie fighting for you. It doesn't necessarily mean the design themselves don't work. They just need to be handled properly and with care.

Edit:

I guess I can toss in two wiki pages at least that give the general gist on the first paragraph:

Wait - Saturday Night Live was. . . . funny? I'm not sure how to deal with this emotion.

That used to happen a lot more often... before some of you were born, I'm guessing.

Me? Good lord no - I'm ancient. I caught the early days with Belushi and Aykroyd and Curtin on television when I was a kid. I just haven't found the show funny for over a decade now.

At least that long...

I wonder if they'll use that extra 6 months for good... or for evil...

According to Meet The Movie Press Jeff Sneider claims that production has been pushed back to re-write elements of the script and focus more on Rey, Finn, and Poe:

They want to get to know better the characters they already have. So the new rewrite is shrinking the new roles in order to spend more time with Rey, Poe and so on.

No need for it's own thread for this tidbit, but it looks like E8 has slipped six months to a December 15, 2017 release date.

Not that surprised.

With Disney also having Marvel Studios in their pocket, it'd make sense to not cram multiple anticipated blockbusters into the same summer season, especially with TFA doing so well in terms of both revenue and critical response. After all, one of main reasons they pushed TFA back to a December release was to avoid unintended competition with Avengers: Age of Ultron (which didn't do as awesome as Disney may have hoped, but still earned them a load of cash). And looking at the release schedule on the Wikipedia page for the MCU, they've got Guardians of the Galaxy 2 slated for May 5th with an untitled Spider-Man flick on July 7th, both in 2017. Given the rampant financial success of the first GotG and the general financial success that Spider-Man movies have enjoyed, it'd make sense for Disney to pull their other major money-making film of the year to a time frame when there's not a lot of competition in the action movie market, as December movie offerings tend to lean towards the family-orientated and award-bait variety.

If they can use those extra months to tighten up the script or ensure things are shot "just right" for the movie, then I'm okay with waiting a bit longer. I managed the wait for TFA, and as far as I'm concerned the film delivered the goods on all counts.

Yeah, but the Star Wars Nerd in me is screaming "Not December! MAY is the Star Wars month!"

Yeah, I know - get off my lawn, you **** kids.

Rogue Squadron is also scheduled for a December release. Looks like Disney wants to keep superheroes in the summer and SW in the winter. Not a bad strategy.

In the end I will have seen the movie so many times I will have no odea about the when's of the first time...

You forgot to shake you lightsaber cane at the kids...

It makes sense. One of the things I was a touch concerned about was whether introducing a new set of main characters was gonna be healthy. Though that being said it kind of makes sense; with Han gone they really need to start filling out the rest of the setting. What largely worked for 7 for most probably won't work again for 8, it will need padding.

Well, could be the reason the initial six films were released in May was because that was the same month that Lucas was born in (May 14th, to be specific). With Lucas no longer involved, there's no reason to hold to May as the release date if Disney/LFL have justifiable reasons to use another month as the de-facto release date, such as hoping for a similar fiscal windfall that they had with TFA being released in December. We'll see if Rogue One also enjoys box-office success with it's December release date; though I doubt it'll do nearly as well as TFA has done in box-office receipts, it could very well be the sleeper hit of 2016.

Well, they do have Thor: Ragnarok slated for November 2017, but then Thor's not been one of their more lucrative franchises in terms of the MCU; only the Ed Norton Hulk flick has really had a worse box-office performance. Ant-Man had a slower start, but I'm guessing word-of-mouth helped boost that film's ticket sales.

So, remotely tangential to the Force Awakens, and normally I wouldn't share because most of these Trailer Mashups are pretty tepid - but this one is actually pretty good!

Maybe someday we'll get a "not Captain Lensflair" cut of TFA, that includes some of the cut material and isn't quite such a hot mess.

The "General Leia's intro" bit would have been VERY welcome -- I think everyone agreed that the lack of understanding about the political landscape hindered the impact of the First Order's destruction of the senate.

That intro would've made that movie much better in my opinion. Exposition is okay sometimes.

I'm also sad for poor Constable Zuvio. While he's quite different physically from Embo, seeing another Kyuzo would've been great.

I know nothing of that director so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I hope he won't be afraid to go to new places with the franchise.

Bodes well, really liked that movie.
