Smuggling a ship through a sector.

By Ramble, in Game Masters

So the game I am building I want to have a very smuggler base, and to that end the first foray into space is planned as a smuggling heavy, specifically getting a very ordinary medium transport through a densely regulated sector.

My premise is that the players include a former officer of the local customs vessels of the sector, and a smuggler from a bounty hunter group that recently passed through the sector. Desperate, they have been recruited by my own take of a pre ep IV Booster Terrik (experienced legends NPC smuggler) to lay out ideas they will then make choices on.

I am tweaking the map of the sector so that it shows the Hyperspace routes, as well as give them different routes with risk assessments and ideas for what insider information the players will have the option to share, and the moral questions of giving these secrets out.

In most basic terms, think of it like a chess board where they can cross from line to line to avoid traps, blockages, choke points and the like.

So what I need to build on is a comprehensive list of Smuggling scams and assets to get through hazards, stations, scanners, blockades, and dangers to their success.

My starting list:

Basics:

Outrun the patrol craft
Attack patrol craft
False papers
Changing identifying transmission to mimic legal craft
Changing outward appearance to mimic legal craft
Hiding the illegal goods in hidden holds (unavailable)
Friends in high places
Bribes
Turn off everything and coast by at range
Chase ship – have a faster smaller craft goad patrol craft away from the main ships path
Drop the cargo and recollect after being scanned.
Sucker punch – play injured till the patrol ship is close enough to disable and run before they can repair.
Sneak close to a larger ship and run in its shadow
Hide out in shadow ports

Hazards:

Dangerous nebula shortcut.
Dangerous asteroid field shortcut
Fly too close to a black hole
Skim close to a comet or fast planetoid going your way

Situational, ie Keep the secret or take the easier path:

The smuggler player was part of an BH/Smuggler/pirate alliance who found a way through a blocking mine field. A series of mines were deactivated and painted with an ultraviolet paint, by shining such a light out in front of the ship, they can see the path and run through without attracting other mines through the field. Sharing this secret will let it out, which may cause the alliance to hunt for the owner of the loose lips.

Turn off the gravity - The pilot who had served on the local customs fleet ships knows his people have repaired an ancient Herglic gravity sensor. It sweeps a large area of space that must be navigated by sublight engines but is too large to patrol normally. The sensor can pick out artificial gravity fields, even ones as small as on a sil 4 transport, and direct the patrols to such vessels. The player will be selling out his people's sensor if he lets the smuggler community know that they can cruise by in zero gravity.

Anyone got some other thoughts/smuggling antics?
