Need help with Rebel Aces

By HistoryGuy, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm a Rebel Aces fighter. I'm trying to pick the best squadron with what I have. What do you think will best for me with what I have?

Old Core Set

New Core Set

X-Wing

E-Wing

Z-95 Headhunter

TIE Advanced

TIE Fighter

TIE Bomber

Likely not what you were looking to hear, but can you purchase the Rebel Aces Expansion pack? Gives you some good A-Wing and B-Wing pilots.

Han Solo

Not a lot of options there, unfortunately. I would be inclined to do something like this:

Corran Horn (R2-D2, Marksmanship, Advanced Sensors) [45]

Poe Dameron (BB-8, Outmaneuver) [36]

Tala Squadron Pilot (Assault Missiles) [18]

99 points

Marksmanship will allow Corran to modify both of his attacks, Advanced Sensors ensures you will have actions even if you get blocked or have to K-turn, and R2-D2 gets to be his usual annoying self. Poe's not brilliant with this setup, but hopefully you can use BB-8 to set up Outmaneuver and dodge blocks so you can get a Focus token up more often. The Tala just spends the remaining points as best we can.

I would possibly recommend that, for your next purchase, you grab a copy of Imperial Aces. Sounds counter-intuitive, I know, but it will flesh out your Imperials for when you decide to fly them and it will give you multiple copies of some choice upgrades that can enhance your current Rebels quite a bit.

A post-Imperial Aces Corran & Poe build might look something like this (and be legitimately dangerous):

Corran Horn (R2-D2, Push the Limit, Advanced Sensors, Shield Upgrade) [49]

Poe Dameron (BB-8, Push the Limit, Hull Upgrade) [39]

Bandit Squadron Pilot [12]

100 points

Corran can now do 2 actions before he moves, end up with no stress if the chosen move is green, and regenerates one of his 4 shields while doing so. Poe, meanwhile, can use BB-8 and Push the Limit to likewise perform 2 actions before moving and end up unstressed, which all but guarantees him a Focus token for his ability. The Bandit gets to run around and make a nuisance of itself blocking.

Just had a look on X-Wing Mini's Wiki to see what upgrades you've got available and wow... It made me realise how grateful I am to have been buying ships since the off. You're a little short on useful upgrades, especially for running 'Aces' lists. I've had a go at putting a list together, but you need to bear in mind that it's going to be very fragile as you've got no access to many of the things that give Aces some survivability (Autothrusters, etc). I would use it to get a feel for how the ships fly and what they are capable of. Of course the best advice is to proxy cards, especially if who you're playing against is ok with it. I didn't for a long while and have spent a small fortunes on ships that I never use just to get the cards they come with (Hello Autothrusters again!). I play in tournaments so would ultimately have to do that, but if that's your aim I would suggest planning purchases accordingly! ;)

Anyways, here is the list...

Corran Horn + R2-D2 + Advanced Sensors

Poe Dameron + BB-8

Biggs Darklighter

Should help you to learn how to use Biggs as a protector whilst allowing you some re-positional 'shennanigans' with Poe. Corran and R2-D2 has some survivability too. Good luck!

Edit - Ninja'd by DR4CO! ;) In all seriousness though his list with Corran, Poe and the Bandit is solid. Get the Imperial Aces box set!

Yeah I'm fairly new so I don't have much. Also I don't have a lot of money to spend on it. So its hard for me to get all the upgrades I need for really good lists. Some of the upgrades I've been told to get come in expansions that cost $100. A little much for just one or two cards.

Edit: I just looked it up. I guess some of the prices got reduced, but even still, I'm looking at about $235 (imperial raiders, rebel transport, Tantive IV) for 7 cards. $32 per card doesn't strike me as a good deal because I won't be using the ships, just the cards.

Perfectly understandable. To be honest, even if you had the money to splurge on the $100 expansions, I would still say it's better to build up the collection first. No point having the upgrades from a Corellian Corvette or Imperial Raider lying around if you still need to get other expansions to make use of them.

Given you are on a budget, I would doubly recommend picking up Imperial Aces the next time you make a purchase for the game. I don't think any other pack would have anywhere near the same impact on your current collection, and from there you could pretty much grab whatever you want and be immediately able to field it effectively.

If you don't want to splash out on Imperial Aces itself it's always checking eBay for individual cards. Just something like Push the Limit can greatly increase what you can do with an 'Aces' list.

Another suggestion would be to go onto some squadron building websites, enter in some of the ships and pilots that you have, and see what's available for them. I know FFG would hate to see this, but if they are only going to make some of their best cards available only in $100 expansions, I don't have any problem just proxying those cards in, especially for casual play. Cut out a small piece of paper, use a crayon to write "Autothrusters" on it, and voila!

So then, if you don't mind doing that, your options are far greater.

Poe w/ R5-P9, Veteran Instincts, and Autothrusters.

Wedge w/ R2-D2, Push the Limit, and Engine Upgrade.

Wedge w/ BB-8, Push the Limit, and Engine Upgrade

Corran Horn w/ BB-8, Push the Limit, and Advanced Sensors.

Luke w/ R2-D2, Push the Limit, and Engine Upgrade.

* that's not a squad, obviously, just some options for pilots.

I'm thinking along the line of Wedge, Poe Dameron, and Airen Cracken.
