Can we get a planet token and planetary missions please?

By Stormtrooper721, in Star Wars: Armada

I've played a lot of large starship space combat games like Battlefleet Gothic and Star Trek Attack Wing and I would like to see a planet token and planetary missions for Armada.

I don't find the current dozen missions very epic. I want fleets fighting over possession of a planet or blockading a planet or landing troops on a planet. Battlefleet Gothic had several great missions involving planets like Exterminatus and the planetary landing missions. Star Trek Attack Wing has the awesome Siege of AR 558 mission where you simultaneously try to beam troops to a planet and fight off an enemy fleet in space. Here's a couple video batreps of the Siege of AR 558 in action:

I would like Armada to get planet tokens and have planetary missions too. I would like planets such as Hoth, Endor, Tatooine, and have epic battles over their possession or blockade running from them.

Me too! Doesn't seem that hard to set up, especially since you've got the Attack Wing experience. Shouldn't be too hard to throw something together with friends over a Saturday, go for it, and let us know how it went!

To size the token, I have the following suggestion - decide how many bases you want to be able to sit on it and go from there.

No, for the same reasons we won't see a Death Star as a playing piece. Huge starships is one thing but this is totally different!

That said, new objective selections from somewhere would be awesome. It would be interesting if FFG ship expansions started coming with objectives in addition to the rest of the cards. Perahps... for the Interdictor?

Hell, it may not be a bad idea for FFG to add some expansions that aren't minis, some sort of micro-expansions. Just some upgrades and new objectives and a single board of relevant tokens.

would be the size of a shopping mall parking lot. :)

Make the planets surface the edge of the board with distance 5 from the table edge being the upper atmo.

If you hit atmo going to fast, you take damage. If you fly off this edge of the board, even for a moment, splat.

Given the apparent scale and range of combat in Star Wars (seems to literally fit with on screen depictions vs. Star Trek, where dialogue and visual evidence are contradictory), a planet would cover far more than the entire map.

Needless to say, this assumes that while the ships operate on a sliding scale, the map and weapons ranges are set at a fixed scale. Roughly, I figure the map scale as 1:65000, with each turn scaling at about 30 seconds. Kinda scary to think what some of these ships can do in a game that represents about 3 minutes of combat.

This makes short range attacks occur at 8 kilometers, medium at 12, and long range extends to 20 km.

To scale with the map, this would make the ISD 1" long, vs. a planet which would be around 500 ft. across.

I based this on data compiled by someone else on the Internet using the visual data (which he noted a remarkable consistency in) from the movies and the Clone Wars cartoon, indicating that long range in a standard capital ship engagement was typically around 20 km, with rare instances reaching much higher ranges. I claim no credit for the raw data. I did nothing more than try to translate it to create a cohesive scale for Armada, which conveniently also gels well with the much faster X-wing (which I figured at a map scale of 1:1000, with a 1 second turn.)

Not being responsible for the original research, I certainly am in no position to defend it. I just happen to find it suits my interpretation of the game, and individual perspective may vary.

I have a feeling FFG will follow the "Winning formula" of x-wing and have standard and epic play for Armada.

Perhaps in the form of a big ship pack that comes with missions and objectives. New objectives for standard play would be amazing and already I have seen some home brew ones out in the community that could be really compelling.

Please FFG don't introduce a comically out of scale 4 inch planet token and try to act as if it would have any relevance to the ship's on the table, when in reality when you have a ship that is double the size of the planet and yet is only supposed to be 1000m in length that would mean that 4 inch planet is so far away as to have no possible bearing on what's going on.

I would snap up some sort of campaign/mission supplement. That is one thing i feel is lacking in the game. They need to tie the game to the setting a little more.

Here's an idea we could do realistically sized - Small Moons. An ISD is 1600m - Deimos is about 6000m. It's the size of the whole map, but that's the thing - it's the map. Alternatively, smaller moons exist aplenty, not to mention possible belt or cloud bodies. I see no reason we couldn't get an 'Asteroid Facility' or 'Small Moon' token.

pst... anyone seen DFC's tabletop maps? where you are litterally fighting over the world!

So long as the planetary selection is good. I don't want to waste my Imperial Fleet's time fighting over Hoth, Tatooine, or the Sanctuary Moon.

Kuat, Fondor, Bilbringi, Corellia, Thyferra, etc.

A pack of objective cards that could have variable themes based on the planet - no need to include a planetary token, we really don't need one.

I Would LOVE a cohesive campaign system. I'm waiting for Rebellion to come out to see if they are in any way compatible with some tweaking.

I'd love to see something campaign related, beyond a tournament style pick up game.

I'd love to see something like HotAC for Armada. That is single handedly making me wish I had the time and money to collect two minature games.

The only "planet" token I would want to see would be one 3 ft long, by about 6 inches wide, possibly with an additional inch of curvature. On that token, you could place any relevent ground instalations, (ion cannon, shield generator) that might shoot, or be shot at. Yo might even simulate landing troops, or something, given a proper unit to do this with. (Acclimator, I'm looking for you)

I don't want to see a planet for the reasons others have listed above, but I do think it would be fun if FFG released bases or other large constructs as cardboard tokens with associated Objectives.

I've found it takes only a little bit of Narrative to add the story edge to my games...

For example, we had a Fleet Ambush where the Empire had Ambushed some Rebels - so very quickly, we'd determined that an Interdictor had pulled the Rebel Fleet from Hyperspace before they arrived at the planet (which was the Empire player's edge)... They had to survive it.

An Intel Sweeps quickly became the Rebels desperately trying to find a way past the Imperial Blockade. Tracing a path through, whereas the Imperials were laying Mines on Waypoints instead, which explains why only one Imperial Ship could do it - it was the only one equipped with the Mines.

Establishing a Narrative takes only a few minutes. Normally, after we set up, and just before the first turn, my regular opponents either pop to the Bathroom or Downstairs to get a Drink to have while playing - so its in those moments that I consider how I can spin what I have to a story....

... Yes, having more Objectives would be nice. But they don't have to be gimmicky to sell me.

Yeah, that's one thing we definitely need.

I would like to see models from FFG that come with missions.

Interdictor would be great, as would civilian freighters, transport ships, scum and villainy....

What about a Golan Space Defense Platform piece? Would be an interesting piece and they could easily have some unique missions that would revolve around it.

There could be more than just Golan platforms: Fighting over a Shipyard, or Mining Station or a Mining Operation in an asteroid belt. More terrain of all sorts would be kickass.

Love the Golan platform idea. I also think they could do some themed objectives around releasing some bulk cruiser sized/shaped tokens - escort the convoy, scan for equipment, etc.
