Shooting thru obstacles

By tcaneira, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I, this weekend I played a game, and my opponent got to shoot my Poe thru 2 asteroids. My question is: since he was firing thru 2 obstacles, do I have 2 extra agility dice or just 1? I think that it would be fair to have 2 extra dice, since the probability to hit the asteroid increases, but the rules just say that if you're obstructed you get an extra die.

So how does it goes?

P.S. I just rolled one additional die.

Thanks

This is a common question. :)

Attacks are either obstructed or they are not, it's a binary true/false situation. If an attack is obstructed then you add +1 defense dice. You could shoot though all 6 rocks in theory and still only get that one die.

That said there may be upgrades that can change the number of dice you get.

A final point... An obstructed attack adds 1 defense die, it does not change the defender's agility value.

Ok thanks, that's what I ended up doing, but the doubt arouse because it would make sense since it's more difficult to shoot thru 2 obstacles instead of just one. But yes, the rules just state that you're obstructed or not. Just checking :)

And yes to the second comment, but as agility is what gives you the defense die, that's why I said it that way. Thanks.

True, and most times it won't matter. But there may be a case where it does matter so I pointed out just for the sake of being complete.

They did just recently make obstacles cumulative during activation (i.e. if your maneuver crossed two asteroids you roll twice for damage), so I expect this question will come up from time to time. That change did not affect the way obstacles work when obstructing attacks.

Well, this just don't seem fair... But ok, the question is answered.

Well flying through multiple obstacles is different than shooting through them, so it seems fair to me. Stops people deliberately flying over one that doesn't effect them much (like debris) first and avoiding the bad stuff when landing on another.

Ok I undestand that, but shooting through 2 obstacles is more difficult than shooting through 1. The probability of hitting one asteroid is bigger, so it seemed fair that an extra dice should be applied.

Fluff, and physics, don't apply as we know them in the Star Wars universe. The Rules. Only the Rules.

Here is the reference in order to ward off any ambiguity:

Rules reference, page 14, "Obstructed" article, first precision:

"An attack is either obstructed or not obstructed; the number of obstructions does not change the number of additional defense dice rolled."

I had my doubts when I first saw the rules reference book, but I find it quite handy now :)
