A Combat GR-75

By Shinwakin, in X-Wing

I was watching Return of the Jedi the other day when it hit me. There had to be a real combat version of the GR-75. If you watch Return of the Jedi when The rebel fleet enters the system there is three Gr-75 in the fleet on a strike mission to take out the Death Star. You don't bring in lightly armed ships for a mission like that you would leave them out of the way or in the next system over. So if this is the case and these really are Q-ship or Combat retro fitted ships could we see a new Ace's style pack for the Transport? Any thoughts on this?

That would be cool. It could come in an expansion with an "Ambush" theme, meaning that heavy fire is brought to bear on unsuspecting targets.

I dig it.

The GR-75 is pretty effective, with upgrades like Slicer Tools and Comms Booster, to name just a few. And in a few weeks, you can put Sabine Wren in there and drop bombs with the thing.

Most descriptions I've read, however, do mention some weaponry. So you might give it a turret slot, although a tlt-armed transport is possibly too much.

Just because they don't have guns doesn't make them less effective in combat. With Jamming and Comms Booster you can shift the tide of a battle as well as put a large deadly obstacle in the path of the enemy, not to mention being able to ram another huge ship and lock it in place. Battlefield control. Now add on Ordnance Tubes and put Sabine Wren at the helm and you have an interesting ship that never runs out of ordnance and can dictate control of a large area of the board with stress removal. Fun times are ahead for the Transport... fun times!

There's no point putting ordnance tubes on the GR-75.

While technically possible,it's completely pointless. The GR-75 does not have any secondary weapon hardpoints to equip missiles, and doesn't have a firing arc to shoot them from,

Yep, you're right. I glossed over the symbols. Even better, makes it cheaper. No real need for Sabine then, it just makes a single bomb very expensive.

From the Wookiie:

"Focused entirely on maximizing cargo space, GR-75 transports were armed with four turreted twin laser cannons, a deflector shield produced by the shield generator pod above the stern, a meager Class 4 hyperdrive, and a sublight engine array capable of achieving a top atmospheric speed of 650 kilometers per hour."

"Not intended for combat, GR-75s were commonly placed at the center of Alliance fleet formations and relied on starfighter support in blockade-running missions"

"They (GR-75) also were used as kamikaze vessels, as demonstrated during the assault on the Fondor shipyards and the Battle of Endor, where they functioned as fire ships and were loaded with explosives."

So, yes - there is scope there for them to be armed, and sacrificing a cargo upgrade for a hardpoint seems fair. That said, I like their niche as unarmed support ships.

Transport Aces / Veterans just doesn't have the right ring to it. I like how the Assault Carrier included upgrades that helped the other ships, although I can see many Rebel players complaining about need to buy an Imperial ship to get essential cards. At the rate epic ships come out, I'm not eager to get repeats yet.

Super Dead Man Switch. All ships within R2 are dealt one face down and one face up damage card.

For fun:

Explosives Stockpile

Cargo Slot, 3 Pts

After executing a maneuver that causes you to overlap a huge ship, remove ship from the field off play. Before removing from the field of play, deal 2 face-up damage cards to each ship at range 1.

Language needs work. The intention is to deal the damage whether you ram another ship or are destroyed.

I was mostly getting thoughts on it because I was watching the movie the other day when I noticed it. Sadly I do not see them make any kind of aces pack for epic ships anytime soon. That being said it could be a lot of fun.

I think there were supposed fire ships. But if you want a combat version of a GR-75 then (shameless plug) check out my Scum Conversion kit for the GR-75. You can find it HERE.

The Transport is indeed fun, but only for the person fielding it. It's like a ship designed by the Joker. Anyone who thinks El Bot Estresinho is annoying has probably never played epic.

I was hoping some of the Gozonti Only cards would have left the door open to added the to the Gr75 but alas they did not.

How? None of them are applicable.

Unless you mean generic docking clamps,

enhanced jamming, and a new title for the GR75,

two of which don't make sense for an Imperial ship.

I think the main reason they appeared at Endor is because they only had so many different ship types in the first place, so they couldn't accord to not put them on the screen.

And if you want an in-universe explanation: Remember, they brought the Medical Frigate to battle, so you can't exactly say they don't have a record of putting support vessels directly into the front line.

I just realized something.

Raider can carry docking clamps.

Raider can carry docking clamps.

Shhhh!

I was going to keep this as a surprise for this saturday's Epic game

Ok. I'll add this.

In a cross faction event, any huge ship can carry TIE Fighters. (and interceptors, bombers etc).

Yeah - slightly disappointing.

The GR-75 is pretty solid doesn't really need buffing, but some additional options would have been nice.

Then again there are still some unspoiled cards so you never know.

Raider can carry docking clamps.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure they will do anything on a Raider - you can carry docked ships - but you can't deploy them.

The Goz has a specific ship ability printed on the card which allows it to deploy docked ships - the Raider doesn't.

If equipping docking clamps and carrying docked fighters was all that was required, the Goz would not need that card text

Crap, good point.

Meaning it can carry them, but not deploy them unless destroyed.

Don't think it can even do that - The YV-666 needs a title card to allow it to equip and deploy the pup when destroyed

The article on the Goz does say there's an article on docking and deploying ships in the works - so we'll have to wait for that for clarification ...... or if it's anything like the K-Wing Slam-bomb article ..... not clarification :)

Darn. I thought there was a rule for docked ships where if the carrier is gone they autodeploy but take damage. - and the Tooth was a special exception.

Guys, what are you talking about?

Docking clamps is gozanti only.
