Testing dot to dot for firing eligibility fixes every known problem and is super easy to understand and teach, and super quick to execute. Less clunky and faster gameplay make this a better game.
Range vs LOS queestion
Why not? If the rules for shooting were:Except that it isn't that simple at all, though.Or just simply say that you if you can't draw a line within the firing arc to the target hull zone without crossing a different enemy hull zone, you don't have arc.
1) Measure arc by making sure the targeted hull zone falls within the firing arc of the firing hull zone, and if you can't draw a line from the firing zone's edge to the targeted zone's edge without crossing another enemy hull zone the targeted zone is not in arc.
2) Measure range from closest point in firing hull zone to closest point in targeted hull zone.
3) Make sure yellow dot to yellow dot doesn't cross another enemy hull zone.
how is that not simplified, takes care of the edge case FFG was worried about, and in line with the spirit of how the sequence is supposed to function?
EDIT: New thought, what about going over my own hull zones. If all I had to so was draw a line I could draw a line from the back of my attacking hull zone and get LoS.
Silly right
Edited by Lyraeus[The way #1 is written does not allow for other ships to obstruct. It also allows for what seems to be a Turrets style attack. If all I have to do is draw a line from anywhere in my firing arc to the arc I want to hit and not cross a hull zone I could in theory hit a target outside of my arc lines.
Um... He did say
1) Measure arc by making sure the targeted hull zone falls within the firing arc of the firing hull zone,
For myself, measuring both range and line of sight along the yellow dot line seems like it would have been simpler. When it comes right down to it, the points you use to measure range are pretty arbitrary (I'm still surprised x-wing didn't just use the flight peg instead of the whole base for measurements). Consolodate the factors in combat down to checking that the target is in arc and then measuring everything with the yellow dot, which can't cross hull zones. Probably couldn't be implemented now as it might require a change to the range ruler, but back in the design stage would have been much simpler.
Sooo...did they mean to spoil those ship bases?
They're not a Spoil... They're a small sample of what has been made by the community, and was used as a demonstration..

Fan created custom bases. Nothing official.
how is that not simplified
Because that's significantly more complicated than the post I was responding to.
If you only have to draw a line in arc, that would be simpler, but that's not how the rules work. That was your initial post. Your much more complicated explanatory post changed that by being less simple.
Of course, most fleet scale games use
"You target the arc that you're in"
So if you are in the targets side arc, your shots will hit the side. That might be a little too simplistic for this game though.
i'd add the following to the existing Errata:
Measuring Firing Arc and Range, p.7 This entry should include the following paragraph: “When targeting an enemy hull zone, attacks must be made from the nearest part of the attacking hull that is within the firing arc and can be measured to the target without passing through an enemy hull zone.”
