To everyone who strictly owns 1 of each expansion

By Grivoire, in X-Wing

Question:

1. Why do you choose to do so?

2. Are there any exceptions you've made to any of the expacs/cores and why?

You know, I'm kinda glad to have only 1 each because I am an expat and when the time comes to return I don't have to bring a bulk of ships home. Plus there's a lot of waste with every expacs you bought. Honestly I don't mind FFG downsizing their packaging or make it slightly more reusable (looking at you blister packs!).

I have to admit I've cheated the rule and bought 2 K-Wings, surprisingly not for the quad TLT but the fact that running 2 fully loaded wardens with a prototype A-Wing blocker gives so much fun, the aces are running for their life.

Two reasons. First, cost. I don't have a ton of spare money to spend on the game, and I like variety, so I buy only one of each. I haven't bought a single scum ship yet because it is a bit harder for me to make a good list while only buying one of each.

Second, collecting. I think my x-wing minis are cool enough just to sit on the shelf, but when displaying them as models, it is weird having 5 a-wings and 7 tie fighters. To properly display them on a shelf, one of each is sufficient.

If you're on a lower budget, only buying one of an xpac means you get to fly a wider variety of ships. I don't even have all of the ships left; I don't want to be doubling up yet! My only duplicate is Rebel Aces, which I received as a gift. I also bought a second (original) core set, but that doesn't really count.

Plus for many ships there exists an alternative way to get the same ship. Imperial/Rebel Aces, Imperial Veterans, and Most Wanted are all great ways to double up on ships without it seeming like a waste. The ships that come with epics are cool too.

Getting one of each expansion also opens your list-building to more interesting angles of synergies.

It's easy to build one ship, then spam it out as many times as will fit.

However, doing so opens you to getting hard-countered, as you magnify the weaknesses of that ship-build.

Having only one of each expansion forces you to build fleets that cover each others' flaws, and fly more intelligently.

(Also, you never get confused about which dial goes with which ship, which is nice)

I have 100 point sets of everything besides for my 6th HWK, 8th Scum Z-95, and 3rd and 4th T-70 and 5th and 6th TIE/FO, which I'm waiting on the standalone expansions to come out for.

Before I got everything I'd buy multiples of ships I liked a lot instead of buying one of each. I love spam lists.

I get two of every standalone TIE, and one of everything else with TIEs in it.

I'm almost a one-of-everything collector. Really, my collection consists of...

  • One of each core set
  • One of each Large ship (though I'll eventually get a second IG-2000, I expect)
  • One of each multi-ship expansion (Aces, Most Wanted)
  • One Huge ship (the Raider, though planning to get more eventually)
  • At least one of each Small ship expansion, but never more than two

As a mostly casual player, my main goal is variety - I want to see everything the game has to offer. I'm actually working on flying every pilot in the game at least once, which I track on a spreadsheet. Sticking to only one of each expansion (for the most part) allows me to better do that within my budget.

However, I also really like flying small ships in matched pairs and and mini-swarms. For a lot of ships (X-Wing, A-Wing, B-Wing, Interceptor, TIE Advanced, and so on), I can actually do that pretty easily because the ship comes in more than one pack or set. For others (Kihraxz, TIE Bomber until recently, etc.) I need to buy a second of the same expansion to do so.

On the other hand, I don't really see much value in having two of the same Large ship (except Brobots and maaaaaaybe for certain Epic squads), so I don't double-up on those ever. There's also a few small ships that really don't lend themselves to flying in pairs, such as the HWK-290, that I probably won't ever get a second one of unless they're featured in a new expansion.

I have one of every expansion for most of the reasons above. Also though usually if you wait, you will be getting multiples of ships anyways like rebel/imperial aces added an extra b-wing, a-wing, and 2 more interceptors to my collection. I have 3 z-95s from only buying one of each expansion. I have 2 y-wings from the expansion pack and most wanted. I have 2 ties from the original core set, one from wave one expansion, and will be getting 2 with the assault carrier for a total of 5. If you wait, which I know sometimes is hard to do, you will end up with multiples anyways so I don't see the need to buy multiples unless you really like a certain build so much you just can't wait.

I have one of each pack, for each faction, with the exception of no BroBotsTM, none of the Rebel Epic ships, and two Decimators (because I thought two would be a thing, and the only purchase I regret). The only other duplicates I have are the ships that appear in multiple packs (Rebel Aces etc), and two Firesprays, one for the Empire and one for Scum.

Primarily, it's because I'm a bit of a completionist, but it also comes down to my storage solution (I've limited myself to one pick & pluck flight case bought from Maplins in the UK for each faction, with a Conquest box being used to store the non-faction specific stuff, so cards, dice, etc), and the fact that I hate spam. If it works for other people then that's cool, but it just does nothing for me. I like list variety, and creating different combos that either absolutely max out on attack dice (don't need to worry about survivability if they're all dead), or have durability enough to last long enough for their attacks to grind home, either through arc-dodging or high hit points.

What I have multiples of:

Original Core set.

TIE Bomber

Z-95

Phantom (although this one I am wondering why. Did it because nothing else flies like it.)

This. I agree that flying with different ships helps keep each other from their hard counters. maybe I just haven't played against swarms with no hard counters like 8 Tie fighters though.

Yes. Imperial veterans. This convinced me that a real T-65 fix is coming in the form of Rebel veterans so I can finally buy 1 T-65 expac in peace.

That is a huge fleet you have there good sir

For those who have lots of copies, how do you guys manage the storage though? I want to store them in the smallest footprint possible so I've been using the Stanley case so far but I'm looking at Sir Willi's solution now that I realized FFG keeps churning out expansions (which is a good thing, I wanna get them all :P ) and even buying 1 of each will still require a considerable amount of storage spaces.

I use 2 Plano 1374 (I think) cases, each with 4 tacklebox drawers. You can fit two additional tacklebox drawers in the top section.

One for small ships, tokens and templates and dials and small base ship tokens, another for large ships. Hound's Teeth fit if you pull their wings off, they slide back on snugly when you want to use them.

Cards are stored in Ultra Pro binders. The half sized cards fit 2 per standard size side loading page sleeve. Three of these go into an ultra pro messenger bag.

I'm basically in this boat. Glad I am too, as even with buying one of each you still get multiples of many ships, including a whopping 5 tie fighters if you get the original core set, tie fighter expansion, and gozanti.

I've only bought multiples of 4 releases.

Firespray

Tie Defender

Tie Phantom

Most Wanted

Firespray because it's my favorite ship, defender and phantom for cards...predator with defender and tactician with phantom. Most wanted is the only one I regret. I did it to run two scum firesprays only to find out after I bought and and opened it ffg had changed their stances on which dials you use with a ship.

There's always money in the beer and food budget for more x wing ships.

I buy one of each ship that was seen in the original trilogy. (or dark forces in case of the HWK, wich i played a lot)

Only thing i doupled up on was the core set, because i wanted to run 3 x wings and 5 tie's and found one pretty cheap, I also bought an extra Y wing and an extra tie bomber, because the Y wing is my favourite ship and I wanted the second bomber to fly against a rebel transport in an epic fight.

I miss out on a lot of the good cards in this way, but limiting me to ships from the original trilogy means there is an end to collecting, because i just can't keep up with the output from FFG moneywise. I play many different war/board games, so i have to divide the budget.

Does mean you get to make different lists from the ones you see here, because you have to work with what you have instead of getting multiple expansions just fr the one card! Wich is stupid in my opinion, i don't blame FFG for their way of packaging/selling stuff, but i find it annoying that you don't get all options within one faction. I wouldn't mind having to buy every ship of one faction to have all options, but having to buy a scum expansion to get a y wing title for rebels is lame.

I have pack of a selection, doubles are because of aces and the TIE bomber as I didn't expect the Imperial veterans.

But by now the list of what I don not have is aproximately as long as the list of what I do have :)

Reason 1 budget

Reason 2 balancing three factions within said budget

Reason 3 To many choices and my brain hurts ;)

this topic so does not apply to me...lol trying to figure out how many of the empire vet packs i NEED now..lol as in multiples..

I'm more curious how you all manage to be so frugal with a game like this -- I know I can never run 8 Interceptors, but that doesn't stop me from owning 8 and wanting 2 more Imperial Aces packs to go along with 2 Imperial Veterans packs... which will give me 4 Bombers and 4 Defenders.

It's a problem.

I also want 2 Gozantis.

I bought some collections, so that's why I have several of each ships and enough to make several competitive lists if I want to.

,
My future buying plans are based on 1 of each, with Scum having a rather low priority (except Most Wanted, which is pretty high on my want-list (mostly because the Y-Wing title and starter-pack for S&V)).

I want to have at least 1 of each expansion, but some ships ask to be flow together in groups or pairs.
Ideally I want to have 3+ of each, so I can build each thinkable list and fleet massive epic games. But I'm not in a hurry, so I'll buy an expansion now and then and hope to get them as B-day/x-mas gifts and perhaps in a year from now I'll try to buya collection of S&V ships

That is a huge fleet you have there good sir

Plano to the rescue. I have eight Plano trays, one for tokens and templates, two for Rebels, two for Imperials, one for Scum, one for Huge ships (fits the Rebel Transport and all the cards and tokens for Epic scale) and one overflow holding a few Scum and a few Imperial. I keep them in a nifty wheeled duffel bag that I can get at least two more trays in, as well as the four binders (one for each faction and one for upgrades) with rules and cards.

Mistakes may have been made...
