The fastest fail (concede in turn 2)

By SomeKittens, in Star Wars: Armada

tl;dr If your opponent is fighter-heavy, fleet ambush is not a good objective to hand them.

I'm running Ackbar with an upgrade-heavy MC80 + 3 TRCRs. Lots of firepower, 6 A-Wings to hold off fighters until I can stomp carriers. He's running MC80 + Yavaris + naked MC80. Oh, and almost max points of bombers + HWK for Intel. He chooses Fleet Ambush, drops his MC80 + Yavaris right on my nose. MC30 is at speed 4 aimed directly at my fleet, which is set up to swing around and crash into his head-on. This'll be interesting.

First turn, I lose 2 A-Wings in exchange for his HWK. Lots of fire between the two MC80s while fighters clash and my A-Wings miserably fail at screening bomber wings. CR90s get into position but are a bit crowded.

Turn 2, a TRCR gets the slash, dealing 11 damage (6 to MC30, 5 to MC80). Both MC80s are holding up, but barely. He activates Yavaris and prepares two B-Wings for double-tapping. Of a potential 12 damage, he rolls 10. My MC80 (and Akbar) goes foom quite spectacularly. (He did have a Y-Wing as well in case the B-Wings couldn't do the job).

Down my admiral and a third of my points (more A-Wings bit the dust), I concede on turn 2. None of my now-wimpy CR90s are in a position to finish off his MC80.

Still not sure what I could have done (deployment, probably) but what a game. My opponent played flawlessly.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of fleet ambush, period. But especially since you have a fleet that wants to be at range anyway. I appreciate your willingness to post about a game you got crushed in though, it shows character.

I think the game was lost on mission choice.

The failboat. We've all got our tickets, and we all take a ride sometimes.

I must also state that I love the word "foom".

As in Fin-Fang?

Yipes. 10 of 12 damage... I agree with most people that it's almost never just the dice... but sometimes it mostly is the dice. :D

WWPDSteven's 5 ships vs. 2 ships and squadrons recent match-up, and now this report, I'm getting seriously worried about Intel. If we now live in a world where 6 A-wings isn't a sufficient fighter screen, we're in a completely different world...

we're in a completely different world...

Ladies and gentlemen, exhibit A of why fighters are the future.

Yeah, I forgot to add objectives to the list so I didn't think about it very hard when we were setting up. Lesson painfully learned.

If "SomeKittens really fails at a game against said list" means the list is the future than EVERY LIST IS THE FUTURE! Superb balance, FFG!

{THE HORROR!}

Nightmare fuel.

Between that and the coffee, no sleep tonight.

Yeah I've never had my opponent choose Fleet Ambush and have it work out well for me. I'm considering banishing the card to a black sleeve under my never used VSD.

Not me. I come from a land where six A-wings was plenty anti-squadron cover in Wave I. Nothing like baptism by fire, though, huh? :D

This Weekend I'm taking 10 X-Wings.

It's nothing personal SomeKittens... it's just an example illustrating how fighter supremacy is very hard to overcome with lists that don't also bring an equal number of fighters to counter. Makes me wonder with Wave 2 out if we'll see more and more fighter heavy lists coming to the top.

What is a trcr?

If it a turbolaser reroutes cr90. The iy should of been you 1st ship placed. As as close to your edge as possible.

Those in the ambush should be running left tonright or right to left.

You could also point them so the move towards you that work with your fast cr90.

Fleet ambush can be won but it depends on your set up and how you run the ships.

Oh, don't worry, I wrote that with a grin on my face. Here I was thinking six fighters was enough and NOPE. Gotta re-think how I build things.

Yup, TRCR => CR90 w/ Turbolaser Reroute Circuits. Though to be clear, my opponent was the one who needed to set up in the ambush area (which is why he was able to deploy bombers within striking distance).

Be careful. Dengar, Mithel and a TIE Advanced is a immensely powerful combination now. I have killed many groups of squadrons this way. . .

Fleet Ambush feels mostly like it's asking for trouble. I usually do pretty well.

Fleet Ambush is the objective that brings the most fun to the table in the shortest amount of time.

I usually manage quite well, but I've also fubared quite spectacularly on occasion :D

Two B-Wings Yavaris double-tapping is four attacks of two dice, of which each attack can do a potential four damage (Structural Damage Crit.)

Damage Potential before crits: 4*2*3=24

Damage Potential with crits: 4*2*4=32 (Highly Unlikely)

I'd say you got off lightly.

B-Wings are blue/black, so max 3 damage per attack from dice alone (4 attacks * 3 dice = 12 pre-crit). Structural damage adds one per attack: (4 attacks * (3 dice + 1 crit) = 16).
