Defender Titles - Is This Enough?

By Stone37, in X-Wing

In some story he flew a Defender to protect the Emperor.

I hope FFG sets Maarek Stele to 29 points, realizing they overpriced the original Defender pilots by 6-7.

25 point generics is what we need to make a list of two Defender/x7 and two Defender/D.

Where on Earth are you pulling this 6-7 Figure from? That's insane.

If we get 27 point generics we could at least field 4x Defender/x7s.

won't happen.

Probably to overcompensate for a poor understanding of the ship and/or the game in general.

25 point generics is bonkers for a Defender. A Royal Guard Pilot costs 22 points -- 25 or 27 after PtL, or PtL and Autothrusters, respectively. That alone is a tough ship to kill. Smacking on 3 shields, the Target Lock Action and the White 4-K, not to mention the access to these new Titles, needs to cost 6-7 more points. Otherwise, the game might implode from swarms of Defenders running over the competition.

TIE D vs Aggressor - tell me the D isn't overpriced? Worse dial, 1 hull and shield less, less actions, less options, much less defensive options. The only thing it has going for it is the white 4k - which is highly overpriced.

This post is directly related to the newest announcement for X-Wing. This expansion pack for the X-Wing Miniatures Game includes a rare, cost-reducing Title for the TIE/Defender as well as an assortment of other upgrades for the TIE/Defender and TIE/Bomber. Rule the skies with the Imperial Veterans pack in the 1st Quarter of 2016 -- as long as our boat's hyperdrive engine doesn't malfunction again!

Big ships get a discount though so it's not a good comparison.

And I've outflown the aggressor with a defender the aggressors too dependent on that sloop to turn it locks it into an easy to predict cycle of sloop then distress you can easily use to your advantage.

You can take 3 TIE D's. You can only take two Aggressors.

One thing I like about the defender fixes is that they didn't just get slotted into that poor man's HLC brobot build that you used to see. They got a different style, utilizing the primary weapons more.

And Aggressors can't Double-tap you with Flechette cannon and then a main attack.

Love the new titles. Also love how they gave 2 titles to allow customization

As for the overall pack, im screwed cause the Red Defender looks plain mean and I love it...so need least 2 packs of Vets

I guess Maarek will be 36 points, the new generic PS6 Defenders will be 34 points.

Reduce Maarek by 2 points with the title and get him Calculation and MKII: back to 36 points and able to deal his magic crits while pretty defensive with an evade token.

I think thats reasonable costs.

is Tie D a X BOX HUGE ship that has problems fitting in the field?

Or yes, try and fly a naked Aggressor, I dare I double dare you, MotherLover!

Aggressor is a BIG ship, with filthy-low PS, and it can onl do anything because it has some of the best slots that combo each other like sensors and EPT

So the Tie Defender has Both the BTLA4 AND Chardaan Refit? But this Chardaan refit has a secondary effect on top of the point reduction. And Y-Wings had poor firepower to begin with so a firepower boost was needed. But the defender already had the high end on firepower. The usable cannons are limited but still...

And that's only the first three cards on this one. Who knows what else is in there? But now I am sorta feeling A-Wings got ripped off in Rebel Aces.

Not going to lie, I let out a little, girlish squeak when I read this.

Maarek Steele in a defender? Double tapping? TIE Bomber updates?

It's like TIE Fighter Christmas! All we are missing is Vader in a Defender, then we could do Maarek/Vader/Emperor, with the former two in Defenders, right out of the game!

... did Vader fly a Defender? For some reason I thought he stuck to an Advanced for at least some of it.

if I remember correctly (is it ~20 years already..?! :( ), vader was the -single- tie-adv pilot in "tie fighter" and did -not- fly a defender.

back in the day when the gras was greener and *yada-yada..old men talk*

;)

No, Vader indeed flew in the Defender to help rescue the Emperor in the last mission of the original TIE fighter game, before the expansion and CD special edition.

I know. I was there. Some guy named Maarek Stele got all the credit though.

There was no greater glory than to fly along side the Dark Lord himself rescuing the Galactic Soverign from traitors and anarchists. Good times.

I've been there ... as well.

Good times.

I definitely think this is enough for the Defender. I was already considering a 31-point delta + Mk. II engine in an Imperial list this season to deal with the heavy stress meta I have been seeing in my area. This expansion coming out pushing me towards that decision even more!

Imagine a 29-point ship that can K-turn while stressed and still get an evade token...you could very easily get behind a stress hog. It is also an easy deterrent for enemy control ships firing at you over other targets in the list.

The Defender has been in all my empire builds since I won one in a tourney when it was released. Now I get another attack, though I will have to shed the Mangler to do it. The Force is strong with this set of cards.

Vessery autothrusters

2 evade tokens

1. it has no boost to get Autothrusters

2. it has no evade action.

man, read some cards first :D

A good sky is falling post needs a decent misunderstanding of simple text to really get the chicken little going.

As long as you don't issue him any orders, or he gets cranky and you get choked.

3 x Delta + /x7 + Engine Upgrade = 96 points

This sound like unblockable boosting fun.

....

3 x Onyx + /D + Tractor Beams = 99 points

This sounds like ... no green dice left when the third Onyx fires his primaries.

...

just some random thoughts on the old generics with titles.

I also think that this is enough for the Defender.

It opens up two different builds which are both really hood in their own right.

You can now build a pretty scary 3 Defender ion list or 3 flechette cannons with some modifications.

On generics you can also just take them for the plain 28 points or 29 with TIE MkII as this helps enormously.

So i see lists with an Ace of around 40+ points with 2 Defenders as a real option after this.

For the Aces again a tough but finally good choice to make. Vessery with Ion cannon seems to be a superb thing now. Give him a decent EPT and he can literally get behind someone and either kill him or escort him off the table. Especially good now as the big ships are gone from the meta for a bit.

A cheap Vessery for far under 40 points also has a lot going for him. Good ability, good stats and evade Tokens. Sounds awesome!

I still don't like Rexler that much, but maybe the new Maarek or the Count... Will add some great abilities to the mix!

1. It makes the Defender far more viable in a 100 point list.

2. Thematically the titles fit perfectly. If you've played TIE Fighter (I was about 10 when I did), the Defender is the pinnacle of Imperial ships. It's a complete badass, and now the game reflects that.

I can't express how happy I am that the Defender is now going to be a very viable option. I tried running 3xDelta/Ion a year ago and it didn't go well. Now I think it would be something to worry about.

My favourite ship can now be used in so many ways!

Plus, cheap crewed bombers. What a way to get some people onto the board. LRS for Vessery too?

You can now build a pretty scary 3 Defender ion list or 3 flechette cannons with some modifications.

A mix is probably the best choice. If the target is already stressed, go with the Flechette Cannon first. Maybe you can strip some tokens, then reduce its agility with the Tractor Beam, and finally hit the now less agile, tokenless ship with the Ion Cannon. If the target isn't stressed, use the Tractor Beam first.

This is still only 96 points with Deltas, so maybe upgrade two of them to Onyxes? Or, of course, if the Glaive turns out to be 33 points, take one of those with Crack Shot and a Tractor beam, to ensure that -1 agility when you really need it.

I think even that

a single Delta + /D + Ion now is a real danger to any small ship.

a pair of Deltas + /D + Ion now is a real danger to any large ship.

a trio of Deltas + /D + Ion now is a real danger to any huge ship.

Just like they meant to be.
