The Cataclysm new expansion is announced

By The Thing In The Attic, in Talisman

Having a sesh at the mo and it is tough due to limited healing spots.

My friend commented that the Barbarian's pose is similar to the main character in Hero Quest.

*green with envy* :(

@ The Hunter: That's what I expected. Would like to know how your death rate was compared to before after you've finished the game.

More board spaces infos, pleaseeeeeeeeeee...

We got it last night but haven't played it yet. We read through the cards (there's a lot of exciting stuff in there!) and looked over the rules.

Did any of you catch whether or not the corner boards can be played with the Cataclysm board? It seems like, yes, they can be; however, the presence of the city, to us, really conflicts with the theme of Cataclysm.

My husband and I were throwing around this idea:

Whenever we draw certain cards, a corner board appears. For instance, if we draw Dark Denizens, the dungeon would appear. Or maybe whenever someone gains a Talisman, they can choose a corner board to appear. That way, the city can seem like a secret refuge that's been thriving, unknown to the people outside of it, and must be discovered.

This is A Good Point! Thanks Jenna. I think that the idea that all expansions can be used with all others, is true but obviously individual game/sessions/players would possibly want some flavor text or whatever, explaining some ambiguities?

Like Dungeon, there are cards in Woodlands that would 'trigger' the board "appearing", which I think is a good idea from flavor text POV.

I'm not sure what card from Highlands or City, that is drawn through the main Adventure deck, could trigger those boards showing up.

But some of you might know.

For my part, when I get it and try to play with the wife, I'm sure it will be first time we won't use all expansions (Harbinger, I'm looking at you) at least until we have a better idea of how Cataclysm "fits" into the tapestry.

Amazon here in the US had it on prime for ONE day and I missed it. Now it is overpriced and they are charging $15 shipping.

So I guess I have to wait until it goes back on prime.

Hi all, new to the site and board games in general. Just picked up Talisman myself and am looking into expansions. The prices on that website seem really good. Do they have a good reputation? Thanks.

Thank you very much. Just ordered!!!

I sort of got hosed by Amazon, I only paid $40 total but it's shipping today and will be here Monday.

I have to wait about a week, for payday, but my local store should have it by then.

Had our sesh and it took a long time.

Death rate was the same as our first Harbinger sesh (1 each) but on both occasions, we only used the new characters.

It was difficult as there was hardly any places to heal life for free or get gold to heal life.

(We used the Reaper and Sacred Pool expansions)

Oh wow, yes, Harbinger would be nightmarish on a whole new level with no corner boards to escape to! And with nowhere to heal anymore!

Here's what we're thinking at this point:

Initially, when play begins, it's just the Cataclysm board.

As the game progresses:

Dungeon Doorways or Dark Denizens cards = Dungeon discovered

Mountain Trails or Eeyrie Vanguard (does this card occur in the main deck?) = Highlands discovered

Equivalent type woodland cards (I forget their names) = Woodlands discovered

Whenever someone gains a Talisman, they roll on the Uncovering the Old World Chart:

1 - The Harbinger returns

2 - The Dragon Kings return

3 - The Dungeon appears

4 - The Woodlands appear

5 - The Highlands appear

6.- The City appears

Are there any other cards that might make those realms appear?

Like that idea.

Perhaps when both Dungeon and City appear, the Deep Realms could also appear.

Yes! I forgot about that expansion. (It took my spot on the table, so we don't really use it.)

First game last night. Three players, and we played only with the Cataclysm expansion and all the smaller expansions since they're all mixed in our AD. We didn't remove AD cards from the corner expansions, but for anything that required corner expansion cards/boards we just burned and drew another card to replace them.

I played the Scavenger, and riding my pig around the board was a fun experience. Hubby played the Barbarian, and our friend played the Arcane Scion. We had a 3.5 hour game, and I won when when Hubby made it to the Crown first and took out our friend with rolling a 6 on the Eternal Crown alternative ending, and then he pinged himself by rolling 1s and 2s with only three lives (I had 6 going into the Inner Region). That's what he gets for trying to use magic as a Barbarian. Karma will get you every time. :D

So, our maiden voyage was good for me, but no one has actually won outright yet, so the saga continues...

Likes:

  • The Denizen deck is all kinds of awesome. Having the roll space abilities and NPCs and additional other character options as dynamic gameplay is a very smart move. And with the location traits on each Denizen, you still get the original flavor of the City, Tavern, Village, Graveyard, and Chapel as long as you find the right Denizen. Plus, additional NPCs expand or duplicate those abilities, so you usually have plenty of options for buying goods, healing, replenishing fate, etc.
  • The new Talismans. The extra abilities in the Cataclysm versions are fun, helpful, and potentially cruel. So much fun.
  • The new items in the Purchase Deck. Huge. So needed. Awesome.
  • The new Inner Region is fun, as it keeps the flavor of the original board but makes things a little harder or puts a twist on them. The Mines and the Crypt are exactly the same (as far as I can recall), but the rest of the spaces save the Valley of Fire are different. Good changes to freshen up your Run for the Crown gauntlet.
  • All the new characters are good. They seem pretty balanced, but we still need to play the Mutant and the Black Knight.
  • The new artwork on the board is really nice. It's so much less cartoony than the original board, and the board itself has some nice heft to it.

On the fence:

  • It'll be interesting to see how this board works with the existing corner expansions. As someone else mentioned, the City in particular is going to give me twitches from a story/theme perspective.
  • The Remnants deck is fun, but I can see it getting stale quickly because of the way we play the game. Plus, with only 25 cards, we'll need an influx of new content with future expansions to keep them from feeling like just another set of Adventure Cards that we randomly lay on the board.
  • Because the City, Tavern, Village, Chapel, and Graveyards have changed, it's weird putting the Terrain cards with original text on the board. I assume we are supposed to play those Terrain cards as written, with the original board text, but it would be nice to get some clarification or FAQ info on that (specifically Chasm). But, it's a nice option to have the original space text come into play occasionally.

All in all, a solid entry into the Talisman pantheon, and except for massive weekend-long campaign play, we probably won't play the original board much at all. This is a really good replacement for the long haul, IMO.

This is a well done summation. I can barely wait till we get our set and can play. I am with you on permanent use of the new board; no sense in going back since it is clear FFG is moving forward. They will either come up new, corollary type corner boards, or perhaps new themes like I mentioned in some other thread; Ocean, Timescape, etc., or maybe let it go to rest for a while and then begin a 5th edition.

I would rather they keep this edition in print/stock and keep adding to it. I think at this point it becomes pretty big to manage and people will end up doing plug and play; not really using every expansion or board. Still, as others have mentioned, it is tedious to break down/separate the expansions from the base game, etc.

(might be the reason we're okay with playing with all parts + our modifications/house rules - - we only play occasionally, a few times a year? - - and its just not worth it for that. We do enjoy our games but I was more willing to deal with the deadliness of Harbinger than my co player. I think we'll both like Cataclysm more than Harbinger.

Most epic way to play would be start with everything pre cataclysm, and if/when the last omen is flipped, remove all corner boards, kills all characters but pass down their items and followers to a new character, and reintroduce the corner boards as has been suggested when things like dark denizens are drawn, but never reintroduce the city. If you've got a solid 8-12 hours to finish a game that is lol.

Im going to add a special Talisman Begining rules to my Talisman Forever ruleset once i get The Cataclysm the point of this is to play from one set to another during play im going to make city shops close and open, regions come and go during play etc etc.

I managed to nab it during that window. It arrived today though I won't be able to play for a week or so.

Yay! Got mine today via FedEx Ground!

Are there any other cards that might make those realms appear?

We're thinking of designating certain Denizen cards as Gatekeeper/Keymaster for each region, to open up the portal when they're drawn in addition to their own abilities and regardless of where they're drawn/discarded. When the following Denizen cards are played, then the linked region is open for questing:

The City - Captain of the Guard

The Woodland - Fairie Caravan

The Dungeon - Monster Hunter

The Highlands - Master Builder

Any region (wildcard) - Wanderer

Hubby doesn't want to do Dragons this way, because there's a lot of setup that is involved with it. Harbinger comes out when all regions come into play through their Denizens.

ETA: The Deep Realms deployment was giving us fits with only having the corner regions come into play one at a time, so we figured that out. When either the Dungeon or City comes into play, you deploy only the card from Deep Realms that matches the region you just deployed. You seed the treasure/purchase deck items at that time, and you place the Chasm terrain card (assuming your have Harbinger) on the Bridge space. You can access only that side of the region until the other side is opened up, at which point you deploy the other side's treasure/purchase deck items, remove the Chasm terrain card, and deploy the Bridge deck.

ETA: new thought.

The Dark Being Denizen card

is the Gatekeeper/Keymaster to the Nether Realm. When it comes into play, you seed the Remnant spaces on the board with face-down Nether deck cards. Treat the Nether cards just as you would the Remnant cards (doesn't count as an Adventure Card if the card is face-down), and you put one on every Remnant space, even if there is already a face-down or -up Remnant card there.

This would make a hella hard game, but it would be a good way to incorporate the Nether deck into the base game and only have to use 12 of those cards. Plus, if you never draw that Denizen, the Nether cards never come into play. It's a way to throw another monkey wrench in some plans. :D

Could one of you tell me how many craft / strength enemies there are within the (basic) adventure cards from cataclysm?

(Just want/need to know the numbers, nothing else. - If there are any enemies with both stats, I usually count them for both.)

Thanks in advance. ;)
