Cinematic action pack. another product idea.

By TylerTT, in X-Wing

the products in the x-wing line are a great mix of ships and ways to play. Large ships have scenarios and huge ships have campaigns. But I want more.

I would love to see packs of models that replace the cardboard tokens used for scenarios and add these eliments to standard x-wing play.

I want to pay squad points to deploy tech satellites, turret satellites and mine fields at the start of the game. maybe even a shuttle I can choose add to my squad that scores points if I escort it to the enemy deployment zone (have it cost 5-10 squad points and earn 2-4X that if it survives) give us some large boxy paper craft freighters from the original x-wing game to help fill our tables with large epic models.

I want the standard game to grow past the 100 point dog fight.

Well in Aces and the Most Wanted packs there are scenario missions as well. But it sounds like you are not going after "cinematic play"

As for the point cost for standard well 100 points is a good number but as it has been said before you don't have to play full on 100 points standard format anymore than you have to play Type 2 Magic the Gathering for every game. However it sounds like you want the competitive point limit for standard to be increase past 100 and I'm just going to tell you that is not a very intuitive idea.

It all goes back to point creep, lets take a look at a still popular game although its popularity has been in decline much like World Of Warcraft, a miniatures game called 40,000. Back in the days it was called Rouge Trader and it had a limited point number for standard play. Like around 500. Back around 3rd edition it was standard to have games that had a point limit of 1000 or even 1500 points. 4th edition came and the limit was set at 2,000 but the point creep didn't stop there. Fast forward to just a couple of years ago and something called escalation (not to be confused with escalation campaigns) was released then all of a sudden these huge Armageddon models were now part of the standard 2000 point format. That release alone made an already ridiculously expensive game even more expensive if you want to stay competitive in Warhammer 40,000.

So back to X-wing, well contrary to popular belief you don't need to buy an epic expansion to make a competitive list. Most people who have purchased an epic expansion pack did it for the huge ship not for the TIE/x1 of C-3P0 card. But one of the biggest draws to X-wing is its affordability. You don't have to sink hundreds of dollars to make a competitive list, and if you are one of those that got to "collect them all" like they were pokemon you can but you got to understand that not everyone does the same and you want to keep as level of a playing field. Sure X-wing is not designed with a core set only mentality you will need the expansions. But it is not a "must buy all to play" game.

I understand you want to play Epic a little bit more or just have bigger games. Well good news there is a format called escalations. However for Escalation I always suggest that you play an Epic match using escalation rules as the final round in addition to all the other escalation matches. Now you don't have to start at 60 points you can start at well standard 100 then build up to 150 200 then the final match be the Epic 300 points with 5 Epic point limit.

So that is my suggestion to you. I think it is good that FFG has been avoiding point creep and have been keeping the premier level caped at 100 points. Well since it is the beginning of new year and Regionals are quite some time away I suggest you try to get in those larger point games now. Anyways good luck.

what I want is more things to do inside the 100 point game and for better production value directed to scenario play.

Currently if you want to play a scenario you have to settle for cardboard chits in a game that's all about the models.

for example let's say they make an escape pod miniature. I could choose to include it in my standard 100 point force by spending a few points. It gets deployed to the table after the asteroids and if I can recover the escape pod first I score extra points when determining the winner.

Or I could spend some points to buy a satellite that boosts my models abilities, maybe it hands out target locks in a particular range. The enemy can shoot it down to score it's squad points like normal or just avoid as much as possible.

What I meant with "grow past the standard 100 point dog fight" was the inclusion of non dog fight eliments in the 100 point game.

The fascination with the 100/6 dogfight truly baffles me. We have such a rich lore to draw from, and no one is interested in campaigns or alternate scenarios? We had to wait for Heroes of the Aturi cluster because FFG didn't want to release something like that for us? This game is SCREAMING out for campaigns and scenarios, and not just some paper pamphlet after-though tossed into the Huge Ship packs, but something with higher production values and at least the same level of thought and support that goes into the tournament packs.

I'd like to see scenarios that simulate parts of the movies. The Hoth campaign was a good start.

One reason for this is that I like the Star Wars movies and, guess what, I like it when a Star Wars game actually makes you feel like you're replaying those films.

But scenarios also offer new strategic options. Some killer lists are totally inadequate for a specific scenario. Scenarios force you to rethink what you took for granted.

<shrug>

I guess the 100pt game satisfies me. I am not a fan of scenarios in a tournament format, though. There is nothing wrong with wanting more scenarios. I just really don't want scenario based gameplay as the core of tournament play.
