New Player - Pretty Bad

By maddog1, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hi guys, new to the forum, new to table top in general. I played a few games in a small tourney (first time to play ever) and got demolished in three straight games. Only got double digits points once. Since then I've watched a few games and read up a bit; now wanted to see what some others think of the current fleet I'm going with. Any help is appreciated.

MC80 Command Cruiser

- Overload Pulse

- Admiral Ackbar

MC30 Scout Frigate

- Ordinance Experts

CR90 Corvette A

- Jaina's Light

CR90 Corvette A

- Turbolaser Reroute Curcuits

CR99 Corvette A

- Advanced Projectors

YT-1300

X-wing Squadron

Total: 399 points

Hey, welcome to the game. Tabletop games can have a pretty steep learning curve, so its important to not discouraged. It seems like you have a pretty good collection of stuff (though I'd recommend an assault frigate, if you don't already have one). The Corvettes can take a little finesse to get used to. I would run only A's until you get a little more comfortable. Your squadron outfit isn't going to do much (especially now that the game is at 400 points). I would throw some A-wings out there for now and maybe a couple of bombers that you like. Overload pulse is probably better used on other ships because you want the Mc80 to get the benefit of the exhausted defense tokens. Hope this helps a little. Good Hunting!

This isn't bad at all. You might consider projection experts on one of the CR90s (Jaina's Light preferably) to hand out shield cookies. Your squadron line up actually isn't bad either as long as you keep in mind what they are there for. Speed bumping a bomber run for a turn. Also keeping in mind you might need to squadron command that 1300 with a CR90 at some point to jump him up into things.

Lastly, most importantly, engine techs on the MC80. You can't have that many points stuck at speed 2. It will cost you games.

Welcome to the game. I offer my site as a resource, especially if you're planning to be Rebels.

Don't listen to him, it's a trap!

Come to the dark side, we have, um, a noticeable lack of ewoks.

Thanks for the help guys. I played a game yesterday with this fleet and actually won by a fair margin. Will be playing again tomorrow after doing some tweaks you guys mentioned, and I will report back. Im not sure how to add an Mk2 without doing away with at least two of the corvettes, and would you say lose the x-wing and YT-1300 both for A-wings?

I think you need ECMs more than OP on the MC80. I would possibly downgrade the MC30c to the Torpedo version, drop a CR90, and then try and fit in a Assault Frigate.

I wouldn't mind X-Wings in this list since you'll probably be flying CAP for your bigger ships.

Okay, so new fleet update. I fit a Mk2 into the list, but gave up the X-wing squadron and YT-1300, as well as one corvette. I also dropped the MC30 to a torpedo frigate. I kept OP on the MC80 since it is the only ship that can take it.

MC80 Command Cruiser

- Overload Pulse

- Admiral Ackbar

MC30c Torpedo Frigate

- Ordinance Experts

Assault Frigate Mk2 B

CR90 Corvette A

- Projection Experts

That brings me to 394. One more point and I could add ECMs, but alas. It's almost sure to give initiative. It also leaves me without any fighter coverage, which makes me nervous. Looking for thoughts, especially compared to the previously posted fleet. Thanks again for the help!

Put Jaina's Light on the TRC90, drop the other CR90A with Projection Experts entirely, sprinkle fighters to taste.

Drop OP, take ECM. You will not regret this 10/10.

I've got to get ECM; I don't currently have it. When I get it I will try your suggestions.

How do you not have it? It's in the Core, CR90 and in the MK2 box, all of which you have listed in the list above..

No, you're right, I do have it. I was thinking of engine techs - don't have those. Sorry; I'll adjust accordingly and see what happens tomorrow.

Instead of 2 cr90's, I would just take one, and load it with TRC. You may not even need jaina's light. You have some space free after that for ugprades to your frigate and/or fighters

I agree with Churry. You are really leaving yourself open to a squadron heavy list going all out in the first 2-3 turns to kill your MC-80. If you stay with no fighters you need to make sure you are positioning to focus down your opponents main carrier from red dice range. However if you run into a list with a bunch of firesprays I am still not sure that will be enough.
