If so, I would look at the top 4 cards, place the one I want on top, he pulls that one, then I pull the next 4, place the one I want, he pulls that one. Am I resolving this correctly, or would I need two crits for that to take effect?

You can only choose 1 critical effect per attack.

No. Each separate face up damage card is a separate instance of that event. He applies to every single face up card dealt to his enemy's ships.

I would look at the top 4 cards, place the one I want on top, he pulls that one, then I pull the next 4, place the one I want, he pulls that one.

Just to make sure, you are looking at the top 4 damage cards, selecting the one you want to give you opponent, and then discarding the rest, right?

I think it only matters for XX-9, not often taken crit effect.
