Discussion: map space

By 1mikethebuilder1, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Didn't quite know where to put this one. Looking for some feedback on this lesser issue.

As much as I love the game one of the things that bugs me about it is that much of the map doesn't seem to be used. We tend to get stuck in the repetitive approach-joust-k turn-joust-k turn-joust cycle. I like large maps and to use a lot of space. Heck, just flying around is fun as hell but I find I don't actually get to do much of it, sadly.

With the introduction of the larger ship, however, my buddy and I have found that it adds a whole new dynamic to the game, both in flying and on offense. With Dash Rendar, for example, with his 360 heavy laser cannon firing arc and equipped with an engine upgrade, this ship zooms and boosts all over the darned place and the imperials chase him everywhere. For the first time (I've only played about 25 games) we found ourselves zinging all over all four borders and it was a hoot. It felt like we finally got to really fly the ships around. I'm guessing this is just one of the perhaps unknown benefits of including larger ships in the game. It really adds a new flavor and dimension. We are now looking forward to including the Decimator and will probably use a larger ship every game.

Thoughts?

Your fellow x wing player,

Another way to use more of the board is to fly A-Wings or Interceptors and look at where you can go on the board (just be careful with the speed of the A-Wing... it's easy to fly too far!) Big ships are fun to fly though and it does change the way the game is played. Push The Limit will also change how you look at the board.

And then if you ever move up to Huge in an Epic game, you'll feel like the board has shrunk considerably when you try to drive the whales and the carnage they leave in their wake...

One way to encourage use of the whole map is to play scenarios that promote that sort of gameplay.

Whenever I put together a scenario on an epic sized board, I make sure to to set up the objectives at significant distance from one another so that players will not crowd one end of the board.

Do you usually set up directly across from each other? If you start in opposite corners, you have to find a good approach through the obstacles, and can make for more interesting games. Of course, I fly TIE interceptors mostly, and they're boost or barrel roll gives them plenty of options when navigating obstacles and dodging enemy ships. I love them!
