Newbie tournament list help?

By Cadianmaid, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey so excuse the prematurity of this post but I ordered a couple of Force Awakens core boxsets on a whim to play with friends upcoming weekend since it seemed cool, and have decided to try entering a 100 point tournament even though I've not played it yet (got about 4 weeks to practice so no problem :P). So looking at getting together a decentish Imperial/First Order list that I can stick with as I build up my skills and go into the tournament and modify it after that for more tournaments.

I would use one of the ones in that newbie thread but they seem to mostly involve regular TIEs whereas I have 4 TIE/fo and I'm not sure how many expansion cards I'd need, I only have enough left in my budget to get 1 big ship like Slave 1 and 1-2 small ships or 3-4 small ships and that'd be all I have to work with in terms of cards and things, not really interested in Ebaying.

The following ships I could get next week(21st onwards) providing they're still in stock at Amazon UK or the FLGS:

Big

Lambda Class Shuttle

Slave 1

VT-49 Decimator

Small

TIE Advanced

TIE Interceptor

TIE Bomber

TIE Punisher

TIE Defender

TIE Fighter

TIE/fo Expansion

Getting the TIE Phantom seems iffy but might manage it.

Thanks.

I would go here - http://xwing-builder.co.uk/build

Once you enter the collection you have, or will have, it can generate a list for ya. This will be easier for you than people trying to figure out which upgrades, etc. you have and all that good stuff.

soontier fell is about auto include on current imperial lists. he gets ran with push the limit (imperial aces), auto thrusters (star viper), royal guard tie title (imperial aces), and hull/shield/stealth device depending on points or flavor. hull and shield upgrade are both in imperial aces and stealth device is in the M3-A Interceptor Expansion Pack, Slave I Expansion Pack so you may want to buy that card single on ebay and you can get soontier fell off ebay as well if you don't want to buy the 3rd interceptor after aces.

you can run that fell with hull or stealth with 4 ps3 tie FO's and that will work out. you will be at 99 points so that means that you get to choose initiative against anyone at 100 points. that is very important for fell to move after other ps9 pilots so he can react with his boost and barrel rolls. he takes some skill to fly but if you running imperials its worth the effort. the reason for the PS3 tie fo is to out PS bid the generic ps2 Y-wings you will face with their turrets.

so to make this list work you need to buy

imperial aces

Tie interceptor expansion (or fell card off ebay or get one from someone at local store since it was a give away card a year or so ago and most people have duplicates)

slave 1 expansion or buy stealth device card off ebay

star viper or buy auto thrusters off ebay.

it will be a good list and teach you a lot.

Buy the Decimator. It comes with most of the upgrades you'll want on it as a beginner and can survive a massive amount of punishment.

Then you'll be able to use 3 of your 4 TIE/FO to fill out the rest of your 100 points.

Expect to get pummeled by combos you can't even imagine, but you'll have fun doing it. :D

decimator can be harder to field and a new player playing a decimator and fell may not go well.

How about this list then?

Soontir Fel

Push the limit, auto thrusters, shield upgrade, Royal guard tie 36 pts

Omega squad pilot

Juke, comms relay 22 pts

Omega squad pilot

Juke, comms relay 22 pts

Omega squad pilot

Comms relay 20 pts

100 pts total

Well, Juke is not available yet, although maybe it is now...

This would work better with Carnor Jax because his ability has great synergy with Juke

And also, you want to have more Jukes. The more you have, the better it is.

So you end up with '3 Jukes & a Jerk':

Carnor Jax w/ PTL, royal guard, autothrusters & hull = 34

3 Omegas w/ comm relay & Juke

100

I've been practicing with it and its not bad. You really need all of your ships to survive long enough to deal some good damage before the first one bites it or else you can struggle. Comm Relay really helps with that, but if you make some bad piloting choices and get one of your ships in trouble early, it can be tough to recover. So just keep that in mind!

If you are going to a tournament and have not really played a game yet, I suggest you bring a learning attitude, a smile, and good humor. It won't matter what you bring. You will get your teeth kicked in.

Fly what interests you and keep a positive attitude.

Hey so I sold my 2nd FA core set to a friend who I played a match with and ordered 2 TIE/fos and a TIE Phantom, could I do anything decent with TIE/fos and a Phantom or is just doing standard VT-49 Decimator+Phantom like in newbie builds thread better?

Of course you can do FO's with phantom! I don't know what cards you have available, though, so hard to suggest builds. Here are some phantom builds that 'work':

Whisper or Echo w/ VI, FCS, Gunner & ACD

Veteran instincts gives you greater odds of shooting first (important on the phantom so you can cloak up before return fire comes at you). Gunner is also good, not just because of the damage it deals (combined with FCS, this is typically a lot) but because it lets you take evade as your action (since you don't usually need focus for your attacks----well, if no one is shooting at you, focus away!). Evade keeps you alive longer, especially on Whisper, who gets a free focus (evade + Focus are best to have together to shrug off damage).

Whisper or Echo w/ VI, rebel captive, sensor jammer & ACD

Some people prefer Recon Specialist here, because without having FCS, they feel double focus tokens gives them some boost in both offense and defense. Rebel Captive is better though. It does two things: first, it discourages your opponent from shooting at your phantom (because no one likes getting stressed). And not being shot at means you take 0 damage! But it also messes with your opponent's priorities----giving an additional possibility of them making a targeting error. Forcing your opponent to make errors wins games. Oh, and with sensor jammer, even if they do shoot at your phantom, next turn they HAVE to clear their stress or else be unable to hurt your phantom again (because they need to focus to put damage through the sensor jammer).

You can also use Rebel Captive with FCS.....I've been using it a lot recently, and am starting to prefer it over gunner...

Whisper or Echo w/ VI, FCS, intel agent & ACD

This is the 'cheap' named phantom option. The only reason you really take this is because you don't have enough points for the above, better options (because you wouldn't be able to fit whatever else you're taking in your list). Intel Agent is handy because sometimes you face opponents with higher pilot skill than you. It helps because you get to use it before decloaking, and being informed makes decision making easier!

Hey so I have atm

1 FA core set

1 TIE Phantom

and I've ordered on Amazon

1 Slave 1

1 VT-49 Decimator

I was expecting to get 2 TIE/fo expansions today but they seem to be delayed til January when I rang up the FLGS but I should have those in time.

I've played a couple crazy game against friends and one much more sane game in the FLGS, so looking at your suggestion how about this for a list to take to tourney:

Whisper

VI,FCS,ACD 39 pts

Chiraneau

Expose, Ysanne Isard, Gunner 59 pts

98 pts

expose is not a good card. boosting the dice you have is more powerful than rolling one more dice with no boosts. chirpie is good with engine upgrade if you have it to ark dodge better.

chirpie try VI, engine upgrade, gunner, and another 3 point crew. Darth vader is good but you will need the shuttle expansion for that. you will get to PS10 with that so you can arc dodge somewhat with the engine upgrade and stay alive a little better. Don't jam that decimator down anyone's throat or it will go down fast. better to stay on the run doing 1v1 fights if possible

Considering what cards you have available, I would say that is fine. If you have intel agent, though (can't remember what it comes with), I'd add that in.

Veteran Instincts is good on Chiraneau, although predator is better, especially in conjunction with engine upgrade. Expose will do in the meantime, however.

Okay so ordering an engine upgrade and a 2nd VI on eBay how about this:

Chiraneau

VI, Gunner, Recon Specialist, Engine Upgrade

Whisper

VI, FCS, ACD

98 pts

I was wondering is it better to have a PS9 Whisper or Predator on Chiraneau?

Recon Spec is not good on Chiraneau. Switch it back to Isanne Isard and you are golden!

Defensive upgrades on a 0 Agility ship is not the best idea. Do you have Gunner? Ysanne Isard is solid.

the leading whisper RAC list from worlds ran darth vader crew on the VT-49 but there are many options. Rebel captive is nice. Recon gives you 2 focus but you have no agility dice and only one attack so whats the point in spending 3 points on an extra focus. yes you have gunner but I think a rebel captive or darth vader is the better choice.

does not matter too much. just go with what you have and have a good time playing and learning.

Oh okay so it'll be:

Chiraneau

VI, Gunner, Ysanne Isard, Engine Upgrade

Whisper

VI, FCS, ACD

for iirc 99pts.

I have all the cards for that arriving by early next week so I'll get to practicing the list.

Thanks everyone.
