Potential uses for "Chopper" Crewmember

By ForceM, in X-Wing

So have you found anything making sense for the little guy? Of course his price tag of 0, nothing, nada makes him a brillant option as itbseems, but in reality i see him occupying really important cew slots for a doubtful benefit and a steep cost in damage!

Of course on Dash ge would allow to take the all important Barrel roll as advertised, and let you get a shot if you have none... If you have more PS that is! But i would probably still prefer Kanan or Recon Spec in that case if i could afford it.

Another nice combo would be with Miranda, if she had any way of stressing herself. She could just go red and take an action, and restore the damage later via her skill.

On most other ships i would really shy away from taking the point of damage if i had the choice. The HWK is not a good option, the Ghost and Falcon might be okay if you combine him with R2D2 for instance.

On the Phantom shuttle, taking one out of 4 ho you have would also innmost cases be a bad idea, unless you could roll out of harms way completely and have faced certain death before that. Seems okay with Hera as she has a high PS and can get it to 9 too. All the other pilots have low PS and would not get a lot out of the Barrel Roll. And still i would take Kanan on the Ghost or Phantom instead. So if you really need that action just clear a Stress, and you're fine!

So i am not all a that impressed at the moment despite the fact that he is free. I mostly see him as a filler in lists where you have a free crew slot and are at 100 points. Like that even if you dont use him you at least have the option to do so for free!

Maybe use him as an insurance policy on an otherwise naked tlt warden, but I'm not sold on chop myself.

When you absolutely, positively must perform an action? Chopper, accept no substitute.

Stresshog got your K-Wing double stressed? SLAM out of the danger zone.

That's a great point, if you have a double-stressed K-Wing and do a green maneuver, it seems like it would be legal to use chopper to SLAM a second green maneuver (of the same speed obviously) and then you'd be unstressed to do an advanced SLAM action. Might be handy on a bomber-K.

The fact that he's 100% free means we're going to see a LOT of Chop on tables. Literally anytime you're at 100pts (or 98/99 and want that bid) already and still have a crew slot there's no reason to not take him. Worst case scenario? You never use him and he just sits on the table.

But again, literally no reason to never take him if you have a crew spot open and no points to spend. He'll be there if you need him, and if you never use him it'll still have literally zero impact on your list one way or the other.

I just wish I could have him infiltrate onto the same ship as Jerjerrod...

He'd probably chuck the moff out the airlock first

The box will pay for himself!

(Like the article pointed out, a clutch Boost or Barrel Roll can make the game. That said, you probably shouldn't bank on that manoeuvre, but still. I like a K-Wing or something taking Chop just in case)

I'm now picturing them trying to wrestle each other out of the airlock ;)

Well, there are some lists where you have a crew slot spare. In those cases "Chopper" is a no brainer, because taking him when you have the slot spare, has zero drawbacks.

Recon Specialist is a popular pick on Kanan Jarrus for obvious reason. You could throw on a second RecSpec and Advanced Sensors to make sure you're always getting your triple focus...

...or you can use "Chopper" and at the cost of a damage and one less Focus still get 2x Focus on red moves, save 3 points, and free up your Sensor slot (for Sensor Jammer, Fire-Control, what have you).

This, so very much this. And in doing so, I honestly wonder if they didn't make an error.

To clarify, the only other 0-pt 'proper' upgrade card (eg, not titles etc) we've seen is Genius - and he was 0pts because you had to use him with upgrades that cost you points; he's only free in that he doesn't do anything whatsoever until you spend points elsewhere. This guy is literally "I didn't use my crew slot for anything today, so now I will". Heck, even Greedo cost points, and he had a compulsory drawback.

I see the biggest use being K-wings, though - they've got the HP to spare and the action to justify using it (SLAM as an escape button). I don't think other ships have much of such potential, though I guess a larger ship that had a free slot might find it worthwhile for a boost or barrel roll.

Naked Bounty Hunters would've loved him, too... which probably says something. ;)

Eh... You just made Chopper cost a point to bring on a ship that really probably shouldn't screw with sacrificing health.

Hard pass.

Yea, I realized a moment after posting that Hera works MUCH better with Ibtisam.

Chopper might go well with Farlander, though. For when you really need that 1 hard+ barrel roll.

really, don't you just take him on any ship that has a spare crew slot that you aren't using, he's free so if you don't use him, meh.

He just gives you that option that you can boost out of arc etc if you would surely take a lot more damage than just the 1.

That is a good point, there are no 0 point Imperial crew cards.

First (second) of the prophesied 0-cost upgrades?
