Upgrade Card Packs

By HistoryGuy, in X-Wing

I was thinking the other day about all the upgrades I was wanting. The problem is, all the upgrades I want are in expansions I don't want or would have to buy multiples of ships I don't want or need.

So what if FFG came out with packs of 7 random upgrade cards that you could by like MTG cards?

First off: this has been discussed (many, many, many times) before. That's okay, you're new.

FFG has gone on record that they won't do card only packs. That's not the business model for this game. It seems unlikely they'll go back on that, partially because many players have made the investment in expansions purely for the cards.

And they certainly won't go the CCG route, which is basically dead apart from Pokemon, MTG and Yu-Gi-Oh. FFG has their LCG's and they are very successful

I'll go by your nickname and give you this answer:

It has been said many many times during the history of this game that FFG had no intention of selling individual card packs.

Not a bad idea, but it's not one that coincide with FFG selling model. At least, they are starting to give alt art of some upgrade cards as participation prize in their tournament kit. Store championship will give 3P0 so if you want that card, soon you won't need to buy a Corvette anymore... just look on Ebay.

FFG has run as far away from the "random collectible" model as possible. Hell, they bought one of the few remaining CCGs and is turning it into an LCG. And quite frankly, they have built a customer base because they aren't WOTC/Wizkids.

Random ... heck no. I will revolt.

If FFG went the MtG random route then I would be very happy with what I currently own and play with that.

I don't understand "expansions I don't want". What it means?

Random packs are awful. FFG even knows better than that in their lcg's.

It means, I think, I bought ships I really don't want just to get the cards I do want. I have several of these my self.

I had no interest in the Punisher. I did buy it for the TIE mkII's.

Same for the StarViper for the Autothrusters.

With random card packs you'd pretty much end up spending about as much to get one card you want as you would if you just bought the expansion.

Also: FFG is pretty good about putting cards in multiple packs. Pretty much all the non-unique upgrades are more than one expansion after a couple waves.

I know you're using English words, but your meaning isn't at all clear. It sounds like there are expansions you don't want? But that can't be right.

I've since come around on the StarViper.

An expansion I don't want you should basically read as "an expansion I don't want (to buy (now))".

The problem that I see with random packs, is just that- they're random. Say you want Autothrusters, so you buy 5 packs of cars hoping to get Autothrusters. You (maybe), get one copy of the card. Now you have 5 packs worth of cards laying around. Or you may not even get that card you wanted. I'd rather just buy the StarViper and know I'm getting two copies of Autothrusters.

Yay! 5 packs of Marksmanship, Expose, Tactical Jammer and B-Wing/e2!

To be fair, not everyone is a collector. Me, I want the pretty ships. Even the ones that I didn't think were going to turn out well turned out be beautiful in person. I went from 1 HWK to 3 after I saw the model in person. I buy more on how many models I want, not so much how often I will use them.

So... instead of buying ships to get the upgrades you want, you want to buy in indeterminate number of blind/random packs until you get what you want??

I think everyone is in the same boat. On the bright side it does allow you to fly ships you wouldn't normally even consider.. like say the viper for me, which I've come to adore.

We handle this sort of thing locally by allowing proxies for testing initially, and otherwise if you need multiples of a card permanently then you only need to own a single which is placed above/between the respective ships. Not for everyone but works for us.

Welcome to "Everything wrong with X-Wing Miniatures".

Completely agree(with the "buying ships you don't want or need sucks" part, not the "they should do random packs" part), but it's been discussed to death.

I'm in the boat of "I want multiples of every ship but can't afford it." Random boosters wouldnt solve that. I'll just slowly build up my collection over time. When you think about it, every card you currently do own is [presumably] from a ship you really wanted at one time. So why not revel in the fact that you do have some cards and ships that you really wanted and would be sad to not have.

I hadn't firmed up all the details in my mind yet and now I understand.

No, it does not have to be random packs of cards. Packs could be is needed or most wanted for one side lets say about 25 cards. People talk about profit margins if measured in percentage the profit margin would be higher for cards than selling a huge model or even a small one. Cards are a lot cheaper to make than a smallpainted plastic model and could be sold at the same price.

Saying you want a card that comes in one expansion but don't want the expansion is a fallacy. The card is a part of the expansion, so you want the expansion. You might not want every ship card, upgrade, token, and model in the expansion, but you want the expansion.
