When you enhance a vehicle with a pilot, does the damage capacity increase on the vehicle by the pilot damage capacity?

Simple example: 1 tie fighter with damage capacity of 2. I enhance it with a pilot with damage capacity of 1. Is the vehicle now a 3 damage capacity unit?

My assumption is that the damage capacity remains 2 and the damage capacity of the pilot is just there if the pilot was played as a character unit, not an enhancement.

You are correct, the damage capacity of the Pilot card only matters if it is deployed as a unit. If an enhancement increases the damage capacity of the enhanced unit, it will say so in the text, like Aft Armor Plating.
