You can stop panicking about Kanan Crew now

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing

While I'll accept it can be done as many times as one has focus tokens, I doubt it is squad wide. I'm pretty sure the 'you' here is referring to Kanan only.

Look at Garven's ability:

After spending a focus token, you may place that token on any other friendly ship at Range 1-2 (instead of discarding it).

Or Wedge's:

When attacking, reduce the defender's agility value by 1 (to a minimum of "0").

Or Horton's:

When attacking at Range 2-3, you may reroll any of your blank results.

All use similar wording regarding "When 'X', you may 'Y'" but nobody plays these ability as squad wide. I am positive Kanan's is the same.

The issue that you don't seem to see is that the X is very, very different. "When an enemy is attacking" is not nearly as specific as "When attacking/defending".

What would need to be FAQ'd? Surely nobody thinks you can spend one of Garven's focus tokens, or Kyle's to reduce an enemy's attack?

You use Garven and / or Kyle to keep Kanan supplied with tokens. Of course, you could trigger Kanan while using one of Esege's tokens, but that goes without saying.

Yet another reason to park Carnor near someone. Or Palob.

Action denial remains important. Direct damage.

...

So. Ask me again... Why do I want to play this particular game?

You don't. You should probably just send all your ships to me... :D

pst!

accuracy corrector doesn't give two *****

it only gives two hits!

It only works within R1-2 of Kanan and affects your ships, not his. You control the range, not the VCX player.

These all say "You", meaning this ship may do something.

The key difference is in the "When" portion.

When "Attacking/ Spending a Focus Token" is dependent on the ship in question. The examples you listed could not be construed as being fleet-wide in any form.

When "an Enemy at Range 1-2 is Attacking" is dependent on the Enemy ships, so it would need the "You" addition in this clause to be self-referential.

Contrast with Rebel Captive, which does include the relevant text.

CARD INTERPRETATIONS

Many Ship card abilities use the word “you” to refer to the corresponding ship. Upgrade and Damage cards that use the word “you” refer to the ship to which the card is assigned.
Is there a single instance where 'you' was put in a card to reference a squad-wide ability?

It's a pretty clear intention. When a ship at Range 1-2 of Kanan's VCX attacks, he can spend 1 focus token to reduce its attack dice by one. If you fly within Range 1-2 of Kanan and attack he can spend focus to debuff your shot.

If it were the other way around, it would say "When Defending, you may ...", which is far less text.

It doesn't sound too bad until you add Biggs. Biggs makes everything worse.

Biggs + R2-F2 + stealth + obstructed by Kanon + reduced attack by Kanon sounds pretty **** aweful. Integrated is probably better than stealth here.

Not really enough room for a third real problem ship but sounds very very unfunny to play against.

^^^^^^There should be 100% no doubt this is an AoE effect because of this.

Do you realize how much Carnor Jax really screws up Kanan's Ghost (and this combo)? Talk about someone's Achilles Heel ...

I dunno, I'd be willing to bring one RecSpec and then Chopper on Kanan to make sure I can always Focus if need be. Maybe Advanced Sensors too. Garven and Biggs flying escort...

So take a damage from Chopper to maybe reduce enemy hits by 2 (average of 1 if unmodified attack dice)? Sure, with modified enemy attack dice, if you can use Kanan's ability twice, it will usually be worth it. But that's a lot of usually/ifs. I think Kanan will show up some, just probably not with Chopper crew.

(This is a separate topic, but I only see Chopper crew being really useful when he will improve the odds of damaging/killing an enemy. Reducing damage is not where Chopper crew will be strong).

If you can take one damage on the Ghost, to reduce damage on Biggs? Sure!

Taking damage to reduce damage? I see a problem with that.

Ghost has more health than biggs.

Yeah, if there's an enemy ship within range 1-2 of Kanan's large base then Kanan can spend his focus tokens to reduce attack dice on those enemy ships, no matter who those ships are targeting. So what's the problem?

Yeah Biggs is Kanan's new buddy. Well, maybe. There's so many toys coming with this set, it feels like Christmas!

Oh wait...

Unless it's packing an autoblaster turret, that disruption is suicide.

Kanan's ability isn't "squad wide". It doesn't affect friendly ships at all. It affects enemy ships at range one or two of him. In a game with more than 2 players, Kanan would be able to spend a focus to remove an attack die on an attack against a ship that wasn't friendly.

Kanan isn't too far off from Jan Ors. The trigger is another ship doing something and Jan pays a price to have an effect.

No problem, it would 'work' mechanically. I'm was just asking why would you want to? I've actually answered this myself though. I was going to say the point of Biggs' ability is to prevent damage on your 'ace' ships, and why would you want to voluntarily take damage on said ace to prevent damage on Biggs.... However, when Biggs is about to die, a good strategy is to pull him out of range/arcs, so your opponent is forced to target healthier ships. When you reach that point your strategy might be worth it...

So, I can't attack the knight, because the position I end in will be weakened by the enemy queen. So instead I need to threaten to pin the queen and then take the knight with a rook, on a rank not protected by the queen.
