Looking to get into the game, which core set?

By SplittingImage77, in X-Wing Organized Play

Hello, everyone. First time on the boards and I'm really interested in the game. I read that the best investment is to start with two core sets. But, I'm wondering which ones to get. What do you guys suggest? Should I get two of the original or two of the Force Awakens sets? One of each maybe? Would it be better to have a variety of ships? Or multiples?

Also, does the original core set also reflect the new rules and card changes that the newer set has? As in, does the original set still have the outdated rules/cards?

Thanks for all of the help, I hope to start flying soon!

You'll get different advice. If you're playing casually, get whoever feels fun. If you're playing competitively, get at least 1 of the newer core sets. They have slightly ipdated some cards as well as updated the damage deck which will become standard for tournament play. The pilots and ships are completely different, which will allow you to expand your collection by buying 1 of each. I ignored this advice and purchasesd the original because I liked the look of the ships better. I'm just playing at home with some friends, so that works for me.

Thanks for the advice!

By the way, sorry that my question was discussed in a previous post. I just recently joined the forums and I had a post limit and my topic wouldn't go up until approved, hence the late posting.

I suppose another question that I have is whether FFG has updated the cards/rules in the original core set to reflect the changes in the FA core set? Thanks again for all of your insight! Hoping to start playing in January!

I'm right there with you, 77. I just recently bought my first Core Set. After much deliberation, I bought the new (blue) TFA Core Set for a couple reasons:

1) You will eventually need the updated damage deck if you ever want to play competitively. FFG may update the old (red) Core Set eventually but there is plenty of old stock to get through first. No one knows for sure.

2) After reviewing the ships online, I liked the stat line of the T70 and Tie/fo better than the originals. That topic is still very much up to debate but it made sense to me.

My next planned purchased is the red Core. Different ships and can you really be playing X-Wing if Luke and R2D2 aren't at least in the hangar bay? Plus I agree with what many say about needing more templates and dice. I assume that as I gather more friends into the game, I will be supplying most/all components for at least a while.

This is precisely why I bought the old core sets, while realizing that tournament play would require at the least a new core set purchase. It has been pretty simple to introduce my 20's/30's friends to the game with the old characters that we're all familiar with. If it ever become so committed to play tournaments, instead of in my basement, the investment in a new core set (or several of them depending on the cards) will be the last of my expenses in this game. For now, we're learning with the originals.

Though I agree the new stat line looks sweet. I'm thinking of picking up a core set just for BB8 or whatever.
