Taking on Tough Rebel Squads

By Folkenhellfang, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello all. I was thinking about a squad to take on high HP rebel lists:

Redline 27

Extra Munitions 2

Cluster Missiles 4

Fire Control System 2

35 Total

Captain Jonus 22

Predator 3

Seismic Charges 2

27 Total

Omega Squadron Pilot 17

Juke 2

19 Total

Omega Squadron Pilot 17

Juke 2

19 Total

100 points, passing on Initiative.

The idea is to maintain a bomber formation and maximize the cluster missile attacks while flanking and harrying with the Tie FOs. Any thoughts?

Redline + Jonus = incredible redundancy

cull Jonus, acquire some relays for the Juke FOs, top off with Zeta Leader + V.I or crackshot or something

I guess I get a little paranoid with the dice, either color. I've seen alot of blanks in my day, but I see your point. Looking at the Redline Defender topic stirs some ideas, thanks!

Trust me, I am with you 100% on the dice paranoia, but I mean Jonus literally does nothing for Redline:

  • Redline's ability gives you two target-locks on a target
  • the first you spend to fire the missiles, then you modify the roll with the 2nd
  • then, because you made one attack with cluster missiles, FCS kicks in and gives you two target-locks
  • then, you roll Cluster's second attack and modify with the recently acquired target-lock
  • after the 2nd attack is over, FCS kicks in yet again and leaves you with two locks on the target

because you can't re-roll a die twice, Jonus' re-rolls do absolutely nothing for Redline, who can already re-roll his ordnance

How about a re-write in light of the new titles just revealed?

Redline 27

Extra Munitions 2

Advanced Proton Torpedo 6

Rexler Brath 37

TIE/D 0

Tractor Beam 1

Captain Jonus 22

TIE Shuttle 0

Fleet Officer 3

That puts us at 98 points. I think this build could be pretty strong against a two ship build. Use the Fleet Officer to maximize Brath and APT, while using Jonus to land the Tractor Beam. Agent Kallus is starting to sound pretty good in this list against two ships. Thanks Fick, I get your point big time. I just want to try something really crazy.

The new bomber outclasses the Punisher, so unfortunately, the new TIE bomber ace seems far more effective than Redline and costs less (not as durable, so there is that).

Also, Rexler without an EPT is just a waste. Rexler w/ Predator + TIE/D + ion cannon (or tractor beam, I guess) is a great combo that will hit hard. Its 43 points though, so not cheap!

Generic with an EPT is better than a punisher? Could you elaborate?

I agree on Brath though, thinking it over. Predator doesn't care if Jonus gets blasted or isn't in formation. I like the idea of Fleet Officer helping Brath use his pilot ability on the same turn he TLs.

Tomax Bren? Don't quote me on that, its the PS8 bomber pilot whose pilot ability allows him to basically never discard EPTs that you would normally have to discard (like crack shot, adrenaline rush, etc).

Anyway, here's a list that might be cool when Imperial Vets is available:

Rexler Brath w/ predator, TIE/D, ion cannon & hull upgrade = 46

2 gamma squad veterans w/ crack shot, homing missiles, extra munitions & long range scanners = 27 x 2

100

First turn of the game, bombers take target locks on whatever you most want to kill. Then, provided you can zero in on that ship(s) and keep it in arc when in firing range, you get to unload a homing missile with a focus token that ignores the opponent's evade token and you don't spend the target lock to fire, so its a fully modified 4 dice shot. Even if your opponent rolls one or more evades, you can cancel one with crack shot.

Meanwhile, Brath can shoot twice with his ion cannon + primary shot, getting predator re-roll(s) on each plus his focus token (most like) and is not easy to take down thanks to the extra hull.
